im trying to remember the name of a book i read. all i remember is that there was a guy trying to hide his magic because anyone who had magic went mad or where seen as mad he had the carvings he made talking to him as his form of madness and was going to get married when he is discovered by a group of people at a festival whos job it is to find people like him.
he gets taken away by them and after that my memory breaks down a bit i remember a fairy that interacts with him but i think she was in parallel world. also i think the cover looked bronze and i read it when i was a teenager so its at least 8 years old but i got it second hand so i might be older

Sounds somewhat like the wheel of time series, except I don't remember carvings as a plot device.

>3 DarrylB: It does have some elements of Wheel of Time, which is a fourteen book series; but maybe not the first book (by itself)?

its not where in the wheel of time you only go mad if you are male and touch the true source. in this one it wasn't so much that the power drove you mad it was more the madness is the power

though this did remind me of more details the main guy talks to carvings that he made in the image of a dragon god and the fairy is a researcher of some sort also he is a blacksmith
