German title translated: Selected Works - Nobel Prize for Literature 1923
Genre: Poetry

Poetry, Stories and Essays.
Once again, I have discovered that I have no sense for poetry.
Poems make up the main part, and these have been translated by various people.
On the left the original, on the right the translation. Different methods were used. In literal translation, the verse mas is lost, in preserving the rhymes, the content has to be changed.
It's very difficult and doesn't always work, with prose it's easier, although there are big differences here too.

34SirThomas
huhtikuu 14, 2023, 4:53 am

On the subject of translation, one of the best was Harry Rowohlt.

Hi Thomas, I hope you are well.
I listened to Achtsam Morden as an audio book. It was great. Thank you so much for leading me to this series. I have volumes 2-4 as audios too.
I wish you a lovely Sunday.

toukokuu 19, 2023, 12:29 pm

Thank you Barbara, I'm glad you like the series.
I am fine, I had some things to do outside of LT.
We cleaned our windows, we caught up on Christmas dinner with our family (that's another story), I had some things to do at the office, there was a golf tournament, I had an audit of the treasury of the club where I am treasurer,....
Yesterday we were at the "Geniesserdorf" in our town, many stands with handicrafts and food.
Today we were in the neighboring town, shopping for Chinese and Italian food - and eating delicious sushi (unfortunately the picture is blurred).
There wasn't much time and then psychology got involved - now there are already three books to review, oh I'm still waiting - now there are already 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
But I got through it and here are the missing books:

I also make the listing of my books for myself, as documentation for later....
I just had the problem that the hill of unreviewed books was too high for me in the beginning and then it grew more and more to a high mountain.
That will be a lesson to me not to delay anything so long anymore.

Thank you Jennifer, we are doing well.
We had a varied time in May.
Thursday before last we were at the gourmet village in the local park, lots of booths with delicious food and booths with cooking supplies and other nice things.
On Friday we went to the next bigger town, there is a Chinese and an Italian grocery store, then we went to eat delicious sushi (the photo is unfortunately blurred).
On Saturday we went to a pottery market, 70 different potteries, delicious food music,....

We also bought something:

The following Monday we had a late afternoon ear doctor appointment and went out for a very tasty Italian meal in the evening.
(loup de mer and salmon trout).

Last week we had a nice party at work, it is being restructured and all current and future colleagues were invited to meet, it was very nice.
Last weekend we went to the museum, a special exhibition A Year in Normandy by David Hockney with a very good guide. It was really great!

Tuesday I had a dentist appointment - teeth cleaning and preventative care, teeth are fine!
Today at noon we are going to Freiburg for a week, my wife has a doctor's appointment next week, she has to go to the clinic every year for checkups. We use the time for a short vacation and to meet old friends.
You see, we are busy...

In the near future, art is only for the super-rich, so art auctions are held in space stations.
The story revolves around a work of art that is to be stolen, destroyed, auctioned and protected.
And, of course, this is done by different groups with different interests. Everyone distrusts everyone else.
An interesting approach and excitingly written.

Max Broll is a gravedigger and lives at the cemetery. Together with friends he has built a sauna, which the priest does not like.
When his former great love asks him to bury her sister, a model, he sets to work.
But the body is stolen. When his help disappears and is later found dead, he and his friend, a former soccer star, join the investigation.
Wonderfully weird with a lot of black humor.

When you try to steal a car and it gets demolished by climate activists with a baseball bat, and you try to escape and end up with the Racketeer on a remote island at parents' night, chaos is inevitable.

An abysmal funny story with serious backgrounds.

The weekend was very nice, we had "Weindorf" (wine village) in the city.
On the marketplace and around it were set up stalls of local winemakers and restaurants. There was a small tasting glass (0.1 L) and you could try through many delicious things (witch payment of course 🙂).
In addition, different bands played on three stages.
Because of our move to the apartment we can walk there in 10 minutes - not that we drink a lot, but after one glass we don't drive the car anymore.
But the most important thing was that we met many friends there.

The last week I was very busy, there was a lot of work, but also privately there was a lot:
On Tuesday we had a reading event. For 4 years now, the public library and the local bookstores have been organizing the action The City Reads a (one) Book. This time the author remained unnamed and was only announced at the opening event.
First there was some music (bass, guitar, singing), then a short speech, followed by the announcement of the book.
The author was also there and gave a short reading.
After that there was a champagne reception. Of course, I bought the book and had it signed right away.
The beginning of Der rote Swimmingpool by Natalie Buchholz is very promising.

The other three books were:
2022: Die Unschärfe der Welt by Iris Wolff
2021: Failed because of ... you know why....
2020: Und dann steht einer auf und öffnet das Fenster by Susann Pasztor
2019: Länger als sonst ist nicht für immer by Pia Ziefle
You see, the curators make a good selection.

Last night we were at the summer festival again - a local cover band of The Sweet - youth memories!
Today there will be polka rock - let's see.

An example on youtube.

The lyrics:
You are young or old
Rich or broke
Muslim or Christian
Hindu or pagan
You are green or blue
Black or white
What is good for the body
For the soul for the spirit?
The dance!
You have a lot of worries or you have none
Are engaged
Divorced or all alone
You are fat or thin
Virgo or Taurus
You didn't want to come
But now you're here
So dance!
Shake your booty
Lift your legs
Dance with anyone or dance alone
You can bounce or twitch
Float or bounce
Move your arms or let them hang
So dance!
Your name is Jutta or Dieter
Klaus or Olga
You're too old for heavy metal
Too young for the polka
You start to sweat
No air in the haze
It's only fair
Cause now you're just like us
So dance!

For many weeks there is finally enough rain again!
But it's a bit of a shame for the summer festival and the bands.
On Thursday evening we were with a local band, the concert fell into a rain break.
Yesterday would have been our closing, but since it was thunderstorming, we stayed home. Since we have a season ticket, the decision was easier.
We did not buy the additional ticket for today's final concert, because the band does not meet our taste.
That's the nice thing about a season ticket, you also go to bands you would never buy tickets to - often we were very positively surprised!
Now we are waiting for our visit, we invited friend for breakfast.
Hours of talking and eating - a wonderful start to the day.

Currently reading Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Yesterday I read in the newspaper that the exiled author was sentenced in Moscow to 8 years in prison for criticising Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
I support him by reading a book of his.
It is worth it!

This week I was part of an expedition through long, damp and dark cave.
Unfortunately, I am not the adventurer, but the object.
I had a aastroscopy and a colonoscopy.

It's not very comfortable, but there are worse things.
The examination itself is not so bad, I was anaesthetised, the purging beforehand is the unpleasant part. But now I have a few years of peace again.
