Hello good people!
I have been separating this book from the film, but there are many listed under the film that I believe are books but am not sure. Do movies have ISBNs.
Yours in confusion,
k4k

>1 krazy4katz: In LT? They might.
Sometimes they can be there in the record because the person added the book from Amazon or another source and then changed their details to make it into the movie but never deleted the ISBN.... Always fun with these Frankenstein records :)
And Amazon had historically mislabeled DVDs and assigned them wrong ISBNs (thus making the problem even bigger when one of these comes into the system). :(

>1 krazy4katz: Movies do sometimes have ISBNs. Judging by the number of copies listed on https://www.librarything.com/work/2354, I think most of the editions there are actually books.

>2 AnnieMod: Like you say, sometimes the ISBN is there in error, but I do own some movies that have them printed on the box.

>4 amanda4242: For some reason I am not surprised. Oh well - guess it can be even worse than just uncleaned data :(

Well, I have separated the ones that say "a novel" but I am not sure about the rest. Probably the ones that say "translated from the French" and similar descriptions are books but I am reluctant to keep going because I might make a mistake. I have also added some other ones where the word "Novel" is in another language e.g. "roman".

>6 krazy4katz: I really think somebody combined the movie with the book and that anything that isn't labeled as a video recording is almost certainly a book. There is no way that movie has been catalogued by over 2,000 people; even the Harry Potter films haven't been catalogued by that many.

>7 amanda4242: Thank you Amanda. I have separated out ~4,000 books. Should I do more? I guess I need to look up the movie and see what language it is in. Maybe French? Also there are a few copies that are called "narratives". I wonder if those are books.

>8 krazy4katz: Your separating the books?! If you look at the CK history, you'll see that someone ignored all the warnings and combined a handful of movies with the book. It's less crazy making to remove the editions labeled video recording and any erroneous CK info from all those book records than it is to try to remove all the books from a few movies.

Okay, I've removed everything that was clearly a movie from https://www.librarything.com/work/2354 as well as the CK info that related to the movie; all the editions there can be assumed to be books. The movie is now https://www.librarything.com/work/29766672. Now it's just a question of combining the two book records together.

>8 krazy4katz:, >10 amanda4242: I am too lazy to help, but the book now has a bunch of actors in "Other authors" that I think go to the film.

If you add a work relationship it gets much harder to combine.

I've got everything I can identify as a movie separated from the novel and I think I've got all the CK and other authors cleaned up. I've also requested that the two book records be combined at https://www.librarything.com/topic/336979#8062942.
Can someone take a look at the works and see if I missed anything?

also book: https://www.librarything.com/work/2354

Movies should not have ISBNs. Per ISBN.org: "DVDs may not get an ISBN if they are entertainment or performance videos."
Here is the list of what is and isn't eligible for an ISBN: https://isbn.org/faqs_isbn_eligibility

>15 lilithcat: Whether they should or not doesn't change the fact that some movies are given them; for example, my copy of Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Cyrano de Bergerac has ISBN 0792859634 printed right above the barcode. We can't stop the silliness of giving book numbers to movies, we can only be aware that it happens and deal with it when necessary.

>16 amanda4242: Yes, I have seen ISBNs on DVD boxes, as well. Search 0790731517, in Overcat and you will get Grumpy Old Men with various libraries listing it as ISBN.

>15 lilithcat: "May not" is somewhat ambiguous. I can equally parse that sentence as either "DVDs which are entertainment or performance videos are not allowed to have an ISBN" or "If a DVD is an entertainment or performance video, it is possible that it might not have an ISBN."

>1 krazy4katz: Some do, especially those from the VHS distribution era. ISBN is/was just another code meant as a tool to help distribution procedures. One could have slapped an ISBN on a bag of peanuts if one wanted (I don't think that ever actually happened, but you get the idea).
