Welcome to my 2023 thread. I'm posting a bit early as I have upcoming foot surgery on Friday (and I'm not sure what kind of poster I will be on pain-killers, LOL*).

I have sewn together the blocks and rows of the "Summer" quilt and if I can get it ironed today, I'll post the top. There are some places on it that bug me but I need to move on.

I've printed out copies of some of my paper-pieced blocks to have something to do. I also have some binding to do on those older quilts which came from the quilter. I also have a nice pile of unread books to entertain me. I also look forward to another year of following all you crafty/artsy people!

*Ha! maybe I'll be far more interesting!
** I only have a cast for a week...but I could spend time painting it? Hmm, so do I have paints....

Hope to get this to the quilter in about two weeks.....

That's nice looking, Lois. I'm trying to decide which blocks "bug" you, but it looks good to me.

The "summer" quilt has been ironed and is in a pile for me to take to the quilter in the future.

I've been couch-bound what with the foot surgery. I can't put weight on the foot so I have a scooter to put that knee on (it was safer than crutches). And the hubby has been setting up the icing of the foot and bringing me my meals...etc. While he was out grocery-shopping I made a trip via scooter to the bathroom and then thought I might take a pic of the two recently quilted quilts for which I hand-sewed that last rollover of the binding. I was careful!

Old batik pieces, partially assembled. I've had these forever and as I'm trying to clean up the sewing room. I thought I should just put them together and move on. I think it turned out ok (you can't even buy these batiks now) Photo is a bit dark....

This is another one of my scrappy block collections. This one is twin size.

Still one-footed and getting around rather slowly with the scooter*

Hoping to get the go ahead next week to walk without the scooter but will still have the boot through the weeks of PT. I have wheeled into the studio a few times but couldn't muster any inspiration, so trying to catch up on book reviews instead. I planned to do another paper-pieced quilt but energy but inspiration eludes me.

*except the long central hall(wood flooring) which runs the length of the house....I can speed safely on that.

Just had to share this magnificent quilt that is currently on exhibit at the New England Quilt Museum (where I used to volunteer regularly). It's part of an exhibition of "The Best of Quilting in Canada: A Juried Exhibition from the Canadian Quilting Assn.
Artist is Lisa Belanger, Trois-Pistoles, QC "The Tree of Light and the Four Elements", 2020

(this is a photo taken from the brochure, color is not quite accurate...the sky is a bit more blue. The size of the quilt is not given on the brochure).

Saw on your book thread that you've lost electricity from the snow. We've been remarkably lucky this year and had no snow at all yet. Of course, we are close to the coast. Bundle up, light the candles and have a cup of hot tea with a book.

I've decided I'm going to reduce my stuff. I no longer do "everything" i.e.it's unlikely I'll do a Victorian Crazy Quilt again (although I should put a backing on my great grandmother's top). The problem is that when I start opening drawers...the wheels start turning again. I have a lot of quilt books I don't use, just the once a year to idly browse through. Maybe I'll see if my cousin's daughter wants them (thinking out loud here)

>46 dudes22: Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with all the stuff I want to do, that I do nothing That might be what is happening to me now. I did make a lot of paper copies to do another scrappy paper-pieced quilt but....

I do need to get that "summer" quilt to the quilter.

What do you think the remedy is for us?

PS: I'll let you know when we decide on a day to do the bookshops in Northampton (April, me thinks). We may stay over just for fun.

48dudes22
helmikuu 18, 2023, 1:42 pm

I'm really not into paper piecing if I can avoid it. It needs to be a very special project. I've been using your 8x10 scrap block for my charity quilts lately. I've been cutting my scraps into the various sizes for the blocks so I can use the pieces as leaders and enders and get two things done at once.

Northhampton is about 2 hours from here.

49avaland
maaliskuu 29, 2023, 9:21 am

A month and a half from my last post and I've done no quilting and have not taken that last quilt to the quilter, But, spring is in the air.... we'll see what happens.

Meanwhile, I gave a quilt to the waitress we see at our favorite breakfast place. She has shared some of her stories and I know she has it harder then we do. She happily accepted and I was happy to give it to her.

50avaland
huhtikuu 13, 2023, 6:19 am

And two weeks later, still no quilting. Perhaps once I get all the spring outside work done in the gardens.... 2 yards of bark mulch coming today for most of the gardens, and I still have about 2 yards of wood chips to spread in the walkways of the "gated" garden. There are still some leaves in the back to rake also....

>50 avaland: - Yes - It's time to start gardening. I put some pansies in the front yesterday for a bit of color. It's still too early to do much else. And I like to get all my flowers planted before I mulch so I don't have to move it.

I do want to get to my favorite quilt shop to look for fabric for the backing of that "summer quilt" .... I will likely make small, simple charity quilts again but we'll see.

Went to my favorite quilt shop today (it's 33 miles north of where we live). They have gorgeous stuff; my purse was a bit lighter when I left. I got a blue print for a bathroom curtain, picked up small amounts of 8 8 other prints BUT I forgot to picking some backing fabric for the quilt here that has waited too long to be quilted. Guess, I'll see if my muslin yardage will work.

I'm hoping the new fabric bits will inspire me to get back into the studio. I can only garden so much (especially now that the black flies are out).

Here is nearly all the solids fabric I have. I thought I'd use them up. When I do the horizontal seams it should be about 42" both ways. Do you think that is too small for a lap quilt for donation?

Colors here in the pic are stronger than they actually are.... I've never be a fan of solids :-)

72MickyFine

So, the sewing room got straighten out, dusted, neaten up...etc. I have come to a place where I feel the need to reduce (I no longer do many of the arts/crafts/sewing as I used to and, well, I'm not going to live forever. The other day I decided I would take all of the JUVENILE and NOVELTY fabrics and cut up all all of it into 5" squares. I will make these lap quilts for two charities each fall (ironically, I make these each year and the pile of fabrics never seems to go down....

Soooo, I have taken a whole stuffed shelf of fabric and have commenced with the cutting.

Then I will have to deal with the excess Kaffe Fasset scraps. I made two lap quilts from those and it didn't seem to make a dent.

As Paws said, you're headed in the right direction. When my MIL's sewing days were over and she had to go into a nursing home, my SIL got rid of tubs and tubs of fabric, much of which was unusable for quilting (stretchy polyester stuff, etc.). Although I haven't been very good about it so far, I determined to sort through my many tubs to get things down to what I really would use after seeing what a pain it was for my MIL's family to get rid of her stuff. But it's so seductive, isn't it? I have a hard time not buying more when Philip Jacobs brings out his new lines spring and autumn.

Spent a day cutting up all my juvenile/novelty fabrics into 5" squares. I will make it into lap quilts (which I been some years now). It's several hundred squares...

Now the trick is to put together roughly 45 x 45 inch lap quilts from this very wild collection. This first one is for a young child. I used one fabric block that had a few colo (it's not quite all here ... but you get the idea).

I seem to always be trying to use up what's left of the batiks but they keep showing up.... So here is a quick scrappy lap quilt for the charity pile (this one is has actually been put together but has NOT been ironed).

A few years ago, I used the sizes from your 8"x10" scrap block for cutting up my leftover scraps from quilts (I have made 2 that are waiting to be quilted and I've been using some for leaders and enders.) But this new idea of 5" blocks would be even quicker. As I was trying to neaten up my fabric area today, I came across 2 charm packs of 5" squares that someone gave me that are not my style. I think I'll open them up and try to find a neutral fabric or blender in my stash and make a couple of these stash quilts like post #99. You always give me great ideas. I was already cutting 5"x10" rectangles for some scrap quilts and this will use them up too. I spent some of today cutting up left-over quilt backings which yield multiple 5" blocks. I might label some bags to put them in to keep track of how many blocks of each fabric I have.

Thank you re the compliment re ideas but it really wasn't a big thing. I also had a charm pack or two (I pick them on sale but as I'm trying to reduce my stash, I will refrain from doing that...) I sorted all the 5" squares by motifs (stripes, dots, animals...etc...it also helped to see how many of what so I might do one of those diagonal arrangements. But, I have also sorted them by colors .... (I swear KF fabric multiplies on the shelf when I'm not looking...every time I think I've used it up...I find more.I think I have 10 sets of 100 squares sorted and numbered...I just have to stop fooling around with other things (like the gardens or Saturday's bookstore safari to Northampton)

I managed to get all the garden areas (and there are a lot) cleaned out, before the deluge of rain hit. It's expected to be rainy at least until Monday.

But, I can work in the studio and piece the lap quilts. As of yesterday I have 4 of them pieced, a 5th if I count the batik one. I'm tempted to finish one or two of these just to feel that satisfaction of finishing, but it's not efficient. Plus, I like to bind some of them lakeside in early September.

Couple of questions -

Do you put a border on the quilts made from the 5" squares? Or is 45x45 a good enough size for a baby quilt? I saw another idea that starts with 5" squares and then a couple of solid colors that looks cute. I need to figure out how much of the solid colors I would need.

110avaland
heinäkuu 11, 2023, 6:04 am

Hi Betty.... Generally, no, I don't put a border on it, if it's 5'x5'. Yesterday I put together one that was only 45" squares so I will add a small border to that one to get it over the 5'x5' threshold.

Are you as under water as we are up here? I go out every day and take a garden tour but haven't been able do much weeding. I need two good dry days and another day to do weeding....

We had a patch of bad weather today. I decided to use up last season’s blueberries (frozen) and therefore made a large blueberry cobbler during a very bad and prolonged storm. Reports from town said we got 1” hail. Amazing we did not lose power….

Finally, with hubby's help, I got the button valance up in the guest bathroom. Looking at it now, we could have placed it a bit higher. Good use of old buttons.

We had such a wonderful, temperate day with the change of weather that I just enjoyed the day moving from deck to screen porch to front porch....

I did do a little work in my sewing room at the end of the afternoon. I have the 10 tops done for the charity quilts and after a bit of cleaning and organizing, I managed to get one quilt layered, put together and pinned. I'll pin another one or two more before sewing them.

We had a day similar to yours yesterday and I too spent some time on the porch reading. My sewing table downstairs is an "L" with my machine on one side and my cutting area on the other. I spent some time last week cleaning up the cutting area so I can do some quilting on some charity quilts. We're of the same mind these days. I have some baby quilt tops ready and I'm thinking of trying a new way to put some backs together that uses less fabric. It has to do with cutting a rectangle on a diagonal and sliding the pieces in opposite directions to make it wide enough. I just need to figure out where I have a big enough place to try it.

Nope. Today we had the oldest daughter's son (age 8) here, and we have the other daughter's dog here for the week (just what I need while I'm packing up....apparently the kennels were full )

We will head out early Labor Day (thankfully we will be going against the tide of motor vehicles leaving Maine). We are doing Monday to Monday. Most of the other cabins are empty post-holiday. Will try to post some pics from my phone. (my daughter & family is there now, she reports the water to be colder than last year)

Hope you had a good holiday! Did you get a lot done on the quilts you took with you? Did you have much damage in the rains yesterday/day before? There was a lot of damage in the northern part of the state and in Providence, but we didn't even get any rain down here. Right now, there's a weather alert that there might be some tornados up in the northern part of the state, but we're not even getting any rain now either.

I brought several of my quilts on vacation in order to take some photos "un plein air". Most just didn't work....

Have resumed work on this year's charity quilts, but these will be the last. 1. I've used up all of my juvenile fabric and anything that could be used in children's quilts. 2. I have more handicaps and also screw up more, which is frustrating and slows the whole process down. I think I'll still get the usual ten lap quilts done..

I will have used up the juvenile/novelty fabrics, along with the batiks; then I'll turn my attention to all the other fabrics (years of collecting fabric, usually fat quarters or pieces smaller than a yard. I had a hang-up for florals, too.
