Dead End In Norvelt by Jack Gantos
A young adult/middle school book this was a Newbery award winner. A quirky fun read about a young boy grounded for the summer and the odd residents of his little town in the 1960s. Lots of bizarre humor and history mixed together. Recommended.

A. Woollcott: His Life And His Times by Samuel Hopkins Adams
A biography of Alexander Woollcott, theater critique, writer, actor, radio commentator, and humorist. I always thought he was an interesting person and this is a very interesting biography although hard to find. He passed away during WWII, but was friends with a Who's Who of personages. Interesting read.

Raised In The Country: Memoir Of A 1920s Childhood by Clement T. "Bud" Mertens
Won thru Early Reviewers. This book reminded me so much of my grandparents. Basically an easily read collection of memories of growing up on a farm in the country. My grandparents on both sides did a lot of these same things. This was nicely written in a conversational style with a lot of illustrations to help show various things the author talked about. My Dad would have enjoyed this book, I wish he was still with us so I could share it with him. Would recommend.

Sherlock Holmes: The Breath Of God by Guy Adams
Enjoyable further adventures of Holmes and Watson with a supernatural twist. Several historical characters both real and fictional make an appearance in this case that pits Holmes and Watson against demons and devils. Pretty quick read, although there isn't a lot of Holmes in the book. He comes and goes while Watson has most of the adventure.

Book # 19
Canal Town by Samuel Hopkins Adams
This is Historical Fiction about Palmyra, New York and the creation of the Erie Canal. Set in Palmyra, a young Dr. fresh from medical school comes to town and starts a practice. He soon falls out with the established local Dr. who is old and set in his ways. The young Doc has new ways of thinking and diagnosing his patients.
The first part of the book was fun, entertaining as we get to know the people of the town and in the background the building of the Canal. The second half was a lot melodramatic but I had to keep reading to see what would happen.
I really enjoyed the characters and the old fashioned story and setting.
Probably not a modern readers cup of tea, but I thought it was fun.

Home Movies by Don Meredith
I've had this book forever and finally read it.
I think this is a YA oriented novel. Kind of soap opera/after school special vibe is what I came away with. Sherry Kincaid is a track star driven by her coach/mentor Father. He goes too far and tragedy insues. My recommendation would have to be at least it's a short, easy read.

Ozark Voices: Oral Histories From The Heartland by Alex Sandy Primm
Mixed feelings about this book. Thought it would be stories from people who live and work in the Ozarks, a rural mountainous region in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. There are some of those stories here but also a sort of how to guide when doing oral history work mixed in.
This was a good read, but not quite what I expected.

Open Canon: Scriptures Of The Latter Day Saint Tradition edited by Christine Elyse Blythe & Christopher James Blythe & Jay Burton
Won this on Early Reviewers.
I was interested in this book because I am a member of a church that adheres to some of these beliefs. This was an ebook and I had a struggle with getting it in a readable format after I won it, but once I finally got to the point I could read it, I found it interesting. The LDS church believes that God still gives revelations unto men today. Joseph Smith was the first prophet of this church, after his death the church splintered into many groups and factions as men struggled to gain control of the church. Everyone wanted to be in charge. This book is a collection of essays edited together that discusses the several of the different splinter groups and what they believe and how they canonize their scriptures following the idea that the canon od scripture is open and God is still adding to it.
Some of the essays were more interesting than others of course but this was an interesting knowledgeable read.

Freewater by Amina Luqman-Dawson
This is the most recent Newbery Award winner. I am trying to read all of them.
At first, I was thinking, great another novel about slavery. I am not racist or at least try not to be but it seems like every new book for young people that wins an award has to be some socially relevant book. Children can't just read for entertaining fun anymore. But I soon found myself wrong about Freewater.
This is a historical fiction and yes it includes slavery and the horrors of that institution and the scars it caused on the enslaved people, but it is more than that. This is a very good action adventure novel that is a real page turner and I highly recommend it to young and old alike!!

A Hint Of Hitchcock: Stories Inspired By The Master Of Suspense edited by Cameron Trost
I won this through Early Reviewers.
This as the title states is an anthology of stories inspired by the works of Alfred Hitchcock. This is a mixed bag of stories, some humorous, some scary, some really suspenseful. All are entertaining. This was a pretty quick read and pretty enjoyable. You don't need to be conversant in Hitchcock to enjoy these stories although it will help to get some of the ideas brought across. Fun.

The Paranormal Casebooks Of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Book 1: The Revenant Of Thraxton Hall by Vaughn Entwistle
This was a fun read. I'm usually wary of these pull someone from history and build an adventure around them type stories, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. This wasn't the best one I've read but it ended up being fairly good. Good enough that I will read more in the series. Doyle goes into a paranormal mystery with his friend Oscar Wilde at his side. Wilde kind of grates on the nerves at first, but I think that is the point and this ended up being a fun diversion.

The Ghost Club: A Penguin Audiobook Original by Kate Winkler Dawson
I was excited about this book. This is a topic I find very interesting. It was an audiobook only so I could listen to it.
This is about a British group called the Ghost Club that investigates paranormal activity and has been around since Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle's day. It also talks about Harry Price (a paranormal investigator and member) and his investigation of Borley Rectory, at one time Britain's "most haunted house." This was an interesting story, but something, I'm not sure what was off about it. I don't know if it was the author's narration or what, but I just couldn't get involved in the story.
