The Psalms, Mason Hill Press, 1978. 175 copies. Pp. 178. 4to.

Calligraphic initials and headings by Mark Livingston, printed from wood engravings in red, blue and green. Quarter morocco with raised bands and heavy linen cloth over boards. Printed handset letterpress on Barcham Green paper. The 150 calligraphic initials words and phrases vary in size, style, color and placement to reflect the meaning of the text.

The Mason Hill Press, based in Pownal, Vermont, was founded by James M. Dignon and Mark Livingston It was a short-lived private press publishing from 1975-1985 (or thereabouts) with a bibliography of ten books, most of which were religious-themed. Some additional Mason Hill Press titles are:

1. The Revelation of St. John the Divine
2. Joel (the Prophecy of)
3. The First Epistle of John
4. One Hundred Meditations of Thomas Traherne

The Mason Hill books are known for beautiful letterpress printing and embellishment with calligraphic initials engraved in wood and printed from the blocks in various colors. In this edition, the Barcham Green paper is soft, thick and pleasing to the touch and the printing is exceptional with a slight but distinct impression into the soft paper. A beautifully designed book.

This edition of the psalms uses "the translation commanded by James I, King of England and first printed in 1611, with the spelling modernized, the lines reformed into verse by reference to the Hebrew of R. Kittel's BIBLIA HEBRAICA, 1950; and certain variant readings of the original translators preferred, at the discretion of the printers." (Taken from the colophon).

I thought this one might be coming. I've had my eye out for years, without success. Beautiful book--thanks for featuring.

>2 kronnevik: Same here. I have just missed it twice--sold before I received the seller's catalogue. I do have the The Revelation, though.

>6 SuttonHooPress: Wow, amazing! How is the lettering on the facing verso done — blind impression, watermark, faint color? I love that it spells the equivalent of “Blessed is the man” in Latin and the original Hebrew.

>11 Lukas1990: I don't store my photos anywhere that I can link them, but I have put a few photos into my LT Gallery. You just have to page past the first dog ;-).

>14 Lukas1990: I have seen this book only a few times (missed it twice before snagging this one!). I bought it from The Veatchs, and I know that they have had at least one other copy in the past. They are well worth watching.

>15 Glacierman: Thank you! Those are all of the dogs we have had over 25 years--usually two at a time. None now, sadly. Flaubie (Flaubert--apologies to Gustave!) was the first, hence my username.
