I finished my re-read of The Hobbit. Very quick read, in stark contrast to all of the contemporary fantasy doorstoppers published now. I enjoyed it 40 years later. The only part that didn't quite hit right was The Battle of the Five Armies. It went VERY quickly, and a lot of it was described after the fact to Bilbo (who was conked on the head and knocked out). Definitely not written the same way as Helm's Deep!
Just started my old yellow-paged paperback of Fellowship of the Ring, which is missing its cover.

Spending some time with the Athena Club in Victorian England, in The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl.

Spooky Birmingham, Alabama with Threshold - which is just the right mix between fantasy and horror.
6Narilka
I'm still in Elendel with Shadows of Self.

Finished Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Liked it well enough. Next up is The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik.

>7 seitherin: You're the third person today I've seen on the threads who finished Mexican Gothic yesterday or today! Seems like it might be a sign that it's time for me to read it.... I picked up my preorder of The Golden Enclaves last week but I think I want to reread the first two books before diving in.
9seitherin
>8 curioussquared: You definitely want to read the Novik books in order. Where one ends, the next one begins.
10curioussquared
>9 seitherin: Definitely! I already read and loved the first two, just want to refresh my memory prior to book 3 :)

I'm heading back into space with Nona the Ninth.

Currently reading 2 books, so am in 2 places, the planet Endor The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis and Widdershins, MA in Maelstrom by Jordan Hawk.
13Cecrow
>12 Jenson_AKA_DL:, sounds like it entirely does away with The Truce at Bakura and The Courtship of Princess Leia. Not that I expected otherwise.

I just finished The very secret society of irregular witches by Sangu Mandanna. Present day witch who makes fake potions etc. in online videos ends up invited to tutor three kid witches being raised by a group of assorted adults in a house in the country, near the sea. Elements include round family, a little romance, orphans, a queer couple, loneliness, an abusive family of origin. Plus magic, spells, and potions.

I'm finally reading The Bone Clocks. Very well written, and lots of interesting images & concepts. I'm still confused at 240 pages in, but so are most of the main characters, so who am I to complain? :-)

Ah, when art imitates life!

>16 curioussquared: Good luck with Harrow. It is confusing for almost 70% of the book. I'm loving Nona much more than Harrow :)

>11 Narilka: . mmm. definitely worth the read. I have questions, but don't want to add spoilers.
23david_c
>16 curioussquared: Harrow the Ninth is not your standard linear narrative! I really really liked it.
Spoiler question for those who have read Harrow the Ninth:Harrow sees someone jump or fall off of a bridge, and I've forgotten who she saw?

Spent time in an unnamed city with a family that took advantage of The keeper as a resource. It's a graphic novel, one volume, written by Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes, with art by Marco Finnegan. Creepy enough for October purposes, for sure.
