What did YOU buy today? August 2022

elokuu 3, 2022, 6:45 am

On vacation this week, but went in to work yesterday & I ended up buying 2 books:
* The Codebreaker's Secret by Sara Ackerman (historical fiction, her last book Radar Girls, was one of my staff recs; this was an intentional buy)
* Mercury Pictures Presents by Anthony Marra (historical fiction set partly in WWII Hollywood -- I LOVE that movie era; this I stumbled across & I don't often buy hardcover fiction, even with my discount)

From a large pile of ARCs I selected one: Marmee by Sarah Miller (pub 10/22; historical fiction centered on a character from the classic children's book Little Women)

> A few of those sound good! :P

We were never here - Andrea Bartz
Bad kids - Zijin Chen

Had an ARC mentioned here, but I'm taking it back to the bookstore.

One ARC, which is either middle grade or young adult: The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander. Looks like a family saga told in an unconventional manner. Out in September.

>2 varielle: The Privateer's Revenge

sounds interesting (as any pirate themed things are)! Makes me want to check out that series.

On my fave holiday island again - you know how much I love the local bookstore. 😊
Been good and only bought one today (but discovered plenty that looked promising and might be bought during the remainder of the holidays (next week))...
We, the drowned by Carsten Jensen.

>9 varielle: :D

On Thursday, 27th:
Derek Meister: Der Jungfrauen-Macher (thriller, Frisia)
Theodor Dirks: Der Tod auf Langeoog (= Death on Langeoog; East Frisian story)
Martin Luserke: Der Grieper-Spuk (=The Grieper Haunting; seems to be a gothic Frisian story).

Today: Joy Fielding: All the wrong places.

>8 Yuki-Onna: Ooh, nearly forgot about that title. It's in my "someday" notebook.

Bought two books. One is local history, the other alternate historical fiction.

* _Images of America: Around Eagle_ assembled by Jesse Steinke
* Light Perpetual by Francis Spufford

>11 ReneeMarie: It's a big one! ... Although I've bought it now (as always when I'm on holidays on this island which is lucky to have a tiny but great bookstore, I feel compelled to buy books with the topic of the sea, local history and seafaring. Hey, I'm on a heap of sand in the North Sea... ;-)), I don't know whether I'll get to it anytime soon. Need to be in a special mood for all the 'sea books'... Let me know what you think of it when you get to it before I do!
You also have The Riddle of the Sands on your someday list, if I remember correctly?
That was bought when here on the island last year... :D

Bought yesterday (still on the island):
Boy Lornsen: Klaus Störtebeker
Joseph von Eichendorff: Castle Dürande
Isabelle Autissier: Soudain, seuls
Charlotte McConaghy: Migrations.

Last day of August 2022, last day on the island this summer, last bookbuys on the island this summer, last bookbuys this August:
Joseph von Eichendorff: The Marble Statue
E.T.A. Hoffmann: The Sandman
Annette von Droste-Hülshoff: The Jew's Beech (This was required reading at school, and boy, did we hate it. Today I'd like to give it a second chance...)
Delia Owens: Where the crawdads sing
(Geman paperback version. I'm reading it in English atm., but the language is so lush that I'll be only able to fully enjoy this one in German)
Ian McEwan: On Chesil Beach

>12 Yuki-Onna: Two scary things about this:
1) That you remember that from a year ago!!
2) That I used the word "someday" both times (I just went back & looked).

I only came to LT today to see whether I had truly bought Kew Gardens Girls at War. I'm catching up on a Publishers Weekly issue from months ago & came across a review of it. I got the previous book from the library & read it, but haven't read my copy of the sequel yet.

>15 ReneeMarie:
That isn't scary at all, Renee Marie! I tend to remember certain things connected to certain events/people/places. And everything connected to my stays on the East Frisian Islands seems to fall under this category... I don't stalk you! ;P
And: 'Someday' is the word that fits. It has to be 'someday'. As easy as that. ;)))
