A new month, a new topic.

I'm about halfway through To Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams. Solid series.

I'm back in the Just City, now with The philosopher kings by Jo Walton

>3 ScarletBea:, what's your favorite Jo Walton, I haven't tried her yet.

>4 Cecrow: I believe she writes lots of different genres, not just SFF.
I've only read The Just City and now this one, and they're great - lots of philosophy and debates, since it's a group of people from different eras brought together by Athene to build the ideal city as described by Plato in "The Republic".

>, okay, was curious since I'm thinking of trying Among Others, read some preview pages and liked it.

I'm visiting the Gertrude Hunt for One Fell Sweep.

I spent an indeterminate amount of time in an enormous online RPG with crotchety, hilarious Charlie in An Old Man's Journey by Gregory Allanther.

Added One Foot in the Fade by Luke Arnold to my rotation.

Settling into pseudo-historical version of what seems like it's going to be the Eastern Mediterranean area of Europe this time, with Children of Earth and Sky.

>8 Darth-Heather: I've never encountered that author before. Does the book read like a DM reciting stuff, or does it read more like regular prose? And how old is the old man?

Just spent some time in London and the Manchester area, Amongst our weapons. I still wish that we got more of Peter Grant's persona in every book. At least we get to see Beverly and some other river goddesses.

I'm in Ankh-Morpok, seeing the first newspaper and finding out about The Truth.

>11 karenb: it's a regular novel, and reads like any other fantasy story except that the setting is in a role playing game. Charlie is around 100 years old and not willing to take any guff from any young whippersnappers! If you find it on Amazon you can read an excerpt.

I've just left the Scholomance with The last graduate. The premise of this series is excellent but there is far too much telling and not enough showing for my taste.

Just realized I never mentioned having been in Point of Hopes last week, first in a series someone on this forum revealed to me. Great characters, worldbuilding & great fun. I love Melissa Scott but had been unaware of these. It won't be long before I return to Astreiant in Point of Dreams, which I got at the same time.

Reading the Myth Adventure books with one of my sons. Up to Myth-Told Tales at the moment.

>18 rshart3: Oh, Astreiant is a delightful series. :) Glad to see someone else picking it up. I'm up through Point of Sighs, and have enjoyed each book more than the one before.

(Quick FYI that "Point of Knives" is a novella that falls chronologically between Hopes and Dreams. It has a bit of connective tissue for Niko & Philip's relationship, so if that matters to you, you may want to slot that in before Dreams.)

re: GGK - I've read everything of his except the one that just came out. I always buy his books as soon as they come out, but I have this weird habit of getting nervous when there's only one book left, and wanting to delay gratification a bit. So, I started reading Children of Earth and Sky when I did because I knew the new one way coming and I wouldn't be too long without a GGK book on my TBR shelf. :)

re: Myth-books - I've been thinking for a while that I should go back and re-read the early Myth books. I read all of them, but they got a bit predictable in their repeated gags as they went on. I've been curious to go back and revisit the early books before those repeated gags were established.

Currently revisiting future/alt Edinburgh in T L Huchu's Our lady of mysterious ailments. I quite liked the first one, and this sequel follows the same protagonist, hooray.

GGK taught me quickly not to become too attached to favorite characters! Did he go a spell and not write? I'm not sure why I stopped buying his books, then I realized I was WAY behind. Need to fix that. Melanie Rawn is like that also.

As for the Myth-books, sometimes I just want it simple :-) In this case though, I'm trying to encourage my middle son to read more. I thought I'd try humor. Stainless Steel Rat is another I will likely try with him.

Oddly enough, he plucked Le Morte D'Arthur off my self the other day. I need to see if he is actually reading it. Maybe I need to give him something harder instead of easier to read...
