Thoughts on deleting the 3000+ message chat?

yeah its a big part of the history of this group we should lock it or somehow save it somewhere

I agree with you covid but I do think we should check and check again that we have a list of the sites including all of them or all the ones that arent like shut down github projects (seen a lot of those lately). That is at the very least, of course, for if we can't keep it stored somewhere.

Anyone who can load the page and who wants to go through looking for sites that are worth sharing is welcome to make a list in a new thread.
I tried digging through that and other threads at one point. I mostly saw nothing better than pirating sites. In my opinion, it's one thing to get around the nonsensical filters on school-owned or shared computers to view legal distribution sites. It's another to endanger computer network for stolen work that will likely be blocked the next time you visit, anyway.

What we as admins can do is rename topics to add warnings (like "WARNING: TOPIC MAY RETURN ERRORS: My school has everything blocked") -or- to add instructions ("DO NOT REPLY: My school has everything blocked") -or- to add categories (like "OLD CHAT: My school has everything blocked" vs. "CURRENT CHAT: unblocked websites and games").We can also make sure someone checks the thread for a while to shoo away members who continue to post in it. That could either be with admonishing posts or to go as far as to temporarily remove members from the group.

I think we should rename it. Then we can have someone tell anyone who talks in it to use the other chats.

Spam Fighters (they're a group) and the LibraryThing team tend to shut spammers down quickly, and the spam messages mostly show up in the LT introductory groups such Book Talk, not here. You might never see it.
