70 of 193 countries of the United Nations.
Create your own travel map .

I have always loved lists and checking items off of them. For years I've been collection lists of books and reading from them to broaden my horizons. The 1001 Books to Read list and 500 Books By Women are the primary source of international fiction I've read over the past 15 years. More recently, I have been participating in Litsy's #ReadingEurope2020, #ReadingAsia2021, and #ReadingAfrica2022 challenges.

In order to qualify for a country, a work of fiction must meet two of the following criteria:
1) Author was born in the country (B)
2) Author's citizenship/nationality is of the country or has +20 years residence in the country (C)
3) The book is set in the country (S)

Welcome to the Global Challenge!

I like how you organized your list by region. How did you decide which countries to include? For example, I see Georgia, which is one I have been considering adding although it's not on the commonly used UN list of member nations.

Visitors!

>27 Jackie_K: Hello and thank you!

>28 labfs39: Thanks for the inspiration to put a global challenge in one place rather than scattered over several years worth of spreadsheets/journals! Since I have been participating in yearly Continent reading challenges, it made sense to me to organize by continent and then into regions since I'd need several posts per continent.

My country list was mostly from Wikipedia -- generally following the United Nations geoscheme, with some exceptions in Europe (I liked Eurovac's placement of the UK/ Ireland in Western Europe rather than Northern Europe) and splitting Central Europe into Central and Eastern Europe.

Georgia is included as a member-state on the United Nation's website, btw:
