How about Le Clézio’s The prospector? A complicated, serious novel which is ultimately about a man looking for pirate treasure.
Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s The nautical chart is about people looking for the wreck of a treasure ship. A bit more on the adventure-story side, but still probably doesn’t count as “the obvious”.
Simon Raven wrote several dark, cynical novels with a treasure-hunting theme, e.g. September Castle and The roses of Picardie.
And I’ve always liked Nevil Shute’s The trustee from the toolroom, which is about a retired toolmaker who unexpectedly gets mixed up in an adventure story, recovering some gold that was meant as the heritage of his granddaughter.
Je m’en vais (I’m gone / I’m off) by Jean Echenoz is another unlikely treasure-hunter, a Paris art-dealer looking for a shipwreck in the arctic. This one’s more satirical than adventure story, though.
