Plymouth Colony

The original announcement by LOA of main-series volume 337, Plymouth Colony: Narratives of English Settlement and Native Resistance from the Mayflower to King Philip's War, stated that it was to be released in November last year. Amazon's first listing of it reported that Nov. 3, 2020 was to be the date. Amazon subsequently changed the availability date several times. First to Apr. 27, 2021, then to May 25, and finally to Sep. 28 before stating that it has no idea about when it will become available. It isn't listed in LOA's web site, nor has a slipcased edition been offered to subscribers.

In the meantime, this site claims that it became available for ordering on Sep. 28. I haven't checked to see if that is true, but I'm skeptical.

David, can you give us an update about what is happening with Plymouth Colony and a realistic notion about when to expect it to be released?

As has been noted in a different thread, the Plymouth Colony volume has been rescheduled to publish in June, and we hope to have books in April or May. The inability to consult source materials during the pandemic (since libraries and research centers were all closed to the public) helped cause this extraordinary delay.

We sent the book to press this past week, and now we face different challenges. First, we've run out of paper and the next shipment isn't arriving until mid-December, at the earliest. (The shipment is actually on a ship at the moment, but you've probably heard about the port and Customs delays, as well as the trucking shortages.)

Second, the backlog at all our printers (for both series and non-series titles) is now four to six months for printing and binding. This is not entirely pandemic-related; labor shortages at book manufacturers were already causing delays beforehand, as print sales unexpectedly rose and the labor market tightened. The pandemic only added fuel to both aspects: print sales skyrocketed and labor shortages became more of an issue, exacerbated by COVID outages.

We are crossing our fingers for all our spring and fall titles (and reprints) for 2022, but we anticipate that these delays will continue into early 2023.

>2 DCloyceSmith: Thanks, David. That helps to illuminate the chaos created by the pandemic that is little appreciated by many of us. It is also great that the Plymouth Colony volume is back on track again, bumpy though the track may be. I've been looking forward for this volume in particular for some time.
