A bug has been reported, in which tags that contain an ampersand fail, and return zero books. I have confirmed this with one tag in my own library, and a number of tags from other members' libraries.

Tags with ampersands having been causing problems off and on basically forever. In some cases in the past they've worked in some access types and not from others (search vs. clicking from the catalog vs. the tag cloud, etc.)
For me, currently:
Clicking from the tag page fails.
Searching my catalog (via the upper-right search box) works.
Clicking in the catalog fails. (same as clicking from the tag page)
It seems to be a matter of HTML encoding being different based on the situation.

I think it might possibly be because both & and / are also used in coding. But that's just a guess.

Testing in ablachly's catalog for "9/11" tag:
1. searching "tag: 9/11" in catalog search box gives me the "Tag: 9/11" search line and the https://www.librarything.com/catalog/ablachly&deepsearch=tag%3A+9%252F11 URL, with search results.
2. clicking the "9/11" tag gives me the "Tag: 9%2F11" search line and the https://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?tag=9%252F11&view=ablachly URL, with no search results (which is expected given the encoding).

I have also been having problems with tags including spaces. If I select a tag from Home or from my catalog, it's fine: https://www.librarything.com/catalog/Stevil2001&tag=star+trek&collection...
But if in my catalog, I switch collections, it doesn't find anything. In the case of the above example, it switches from saying Tag: star trek at the top of the page to Tag: star+trek.

I hesitate to start changing my tags whole-sale, as I have a LOT with / in them, because in the past it did not cause any problems; however, I have had the current problem for several months now.
I have many tags with / (slashes) and they all (at least the ones I have tried) malfunction when trying to access a group of books by clicking on that tag in the Tag view. In that case, the system gives me my home page instead.
When I am in List view and click on such a tag in the Tag field, I get this message "AA-nonfiction-recipe%2FMB" and "No books found in this collection." (The / has been replaced by %2F).
For a sorting project some years ago (2011-09-18), I made a non-book record in my Collection "Bookkeeping" that has all the special symbols that appear on a regular English keyboard.
So, for the record, I do NOT have problems with tags containing these symbols when accessed from the Tag view or the List view Tag field:
~ tilde, ` accent_grave, ! exclamation, @ at, # pound sign aka hashtag, $ dollar, % percent, ^ caret aka circumflex, * asterisk, () parentheses, _ underscore, - dash aka hyphen, = equal, {} curly brackets, square brackets, | pipe, : colon, ; semicolon, ' apostrophe, . period, ? question
I DO have problems with these, although I did not heretofore:
& ampersand, + plus, / slash
From List view I got "No books found in this collection.":
%26 ampersand-sort_tag, %2B plus-DO_NOT_USE_on_Add_Books,
When I made that Bookkeeping record, I found these symbols to be unusable in tags for obvious reasons, so I did not check them again:
\ backslash, " quote, angle brackets, , comma
I noted in my record the problems with slash when it started acting up (around 2021-06, and only as the leading character of the tag, but now it has problems regardless of position in the tag).
Ampersand and plus were acting properly in tags when I made the record; I had not checked on them for a long time, until prompted by this bug thread.
The notes in my comments of that Record also include a reminder that some symbols cannot be used in titles when Adding a record, but + and = can be inserted in the Edit mode, whereas / cannot.
I hope that helps somewhat.

>13 librisissimo: Oh yeah, I'm not suggesting everybody should do that too. That's just how I managed to fix it when I ran into it a couple of years ago. It was a lot of work, and it might start malfunctioning too. So it's not a real solution.

I've changed the few tags I have with '&' to use 'and' instead. Fortunately it wasn't an onerous task - I just made sure I was in the All collections view and opened the tags view, and did a page search for '&'. Then I went to each tag and clicked on 'Edit' and fixed it.
This fixed searches for tags for:
Bunnies & Burrows
Chivalry & Sorcery
Clockwork & Chivalry
Clockwork & Cthulhu
Previously, I'd changed tags for:
Dungeons & Dragons
Lords of Gossamer & Shadow
Swords & Wizardry
However, doing this is incorrect: all of these are for specific role playing games like 'Dungeons & Dragons' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons) which explicitly use the ampersand in the title. Changing the tag to use 'and' not an ampersand invalidates any tag searches for that specific game system.
Given the dates, I suspect this is something to do with the roll-out of the LT2 redesign. Didn't the new search system get rolled out around then?
Apropos of that, I've been noticing that site searches using the word 'and' only return titles with the word 'and'. Searching for the same title but using the ampersand instead returns titles with the ampersand and the word 'and'. It looks to me that only parts of the site are parsing the and/& correctly.
For example, searching "Swords and Glory" returns 12 works/1 editions, whereas "Swords & Glory" returns 5 works/32 editions.

Can this issue get some attention by the programmers? If it's not going to be fixed in the near future, could you let us know that? It will help make the decision about whether I should follow Maddz's approach and make a bunch of changes to the tags that are not desirable but a perhaps necessary workaround, or wait until this is addressed.
17AnnieMod
>16 AdocentynLibrary: Even if it gets fixed, practice had taught me that / and & will get broken again sooner or later somewhere on the site - they have special meaning in URLs and needs escaping (and unescaping in some cases) and that gets forgotten often (and tag related screens use the tags in the URLs directly. "+" can also cause issues occasionally.
So... up to you.
PS: If you are using the apps (iOS or Android), you may want to stay away from ":" as well. There is a long standing bug there as well.

I'm glad it's not just me; at least I'm not going dolally. I tag some of my books with the publisher, some of which include ampersands: Adam & Charles Black, David & Charles etc. None of them now work, nor fairly common codes like Q&A and V&A.
Not even typing the URL in helps, e.g. https://www.librarything.com/tag/Q&A

>16 AdocentynLibrary: I've discussed this with timspalding and I've been told that the fix will take some reinventing, and there's no immediate timeline on when the developers will be able to get to that. I'd venture to say it'll be later than sooner, so if you want to start chipping away at adjusting your Tags that may be in your best interest at this time. I'm sorry I don't have a more defined timeline on this.
20saltmanz
Gah. I've got ~130 tags with &, / and + in them. All used to work and now they're busted, and there's no way I'm spending the time to manually fix all of them. At least searching My Books for the "broken" characters still seems to work.
>15 Maddz: Yeah, I have a comic series literally titled "A+X" whose tags it wouldn't make any sense to rename.

If anyone doesn't know, you can update a tag's name by going to your library then clicking on Tags on the dropdown between "Covers" and "Style" and then on that page when you hover over a tag, there's an "Edit" link that will allow you to change the name of the tag everywhere you're using it.
22AnnieMod

OMG really? I've been using month/date tags on my books for years. That's a lot to change and frankly, seems like it should still work if it has been all along. Sure, code is weird, but this just plain sucks.
If it isn't fixable I'll tackle editing the tag in a way that will work. Any other gotchas or pitfalls that I need to watch out for?

Not my code, obviously, but it's hard to understand how something that previously worked will take some "reinventing" to fix.
26RobertDay
>25 lorax: New architectures or upgraded (and so-called "improved") behind-the-scenes software utilities can break stuff that previously wasn't broken. Not upgrading isn't an option, as support ends for obsolete versions eventually.
Not that I'm complaining. I test software for a living, and regression testing to make sure the front end still works properly after some system change has been implemented way upstream is one of the things that pays my rent!

As above, and clicking on such a tag on tags page only takes me to home page.
I really really hope this will be fixed sooner not later. I tried backward slash instead of forward but it doesn't register. I'm not terribly willing to edit the tags; in some cases forward slash is the only appropriate punctuation & working around present punctuation marks would often makes tags either ridiculously long or less accurate.
Being able to access books via a tag when I'm trying to remember title of a book I know is tagged e.g. as 'mythology/folklore/legends' is surprisingly handy & certainly forthright.

So, I see that this probably won't be fixed soon, so now the question is: How best to change the tags so they won't break again or break in new ways? I posted in one of the other linked threads about my tags with slashes, but I see in this thread that the & symbol also causes issues, and also maybe the + symbol? So... Any suggestions on what to use instead? Using 'and' doesn't really sound right for some of my tags ('dogs and wolves and etc' sounds strange...) and is fairly clunky. Any similar symbol that isn't known to cause issues?
31Nicole_VanK

>30 Heather19: Tags names get added to the address bar when you try to look at a tag - and because of that require escaping to work. LT is not very good at making sure that it always account for this - so they escape where they should not and do not escape where they should sometimes and things do not match properly.
So &, #, / and all types of quotes (' or ") can always cause troubles. $ can cause a LOT of problems but LT seems to usually be fine with it.
: works properly on the site but not in the apps (which I am fine with so mine use : where I want them to).
| is usually safe. ";" should also be safe.
, never works because it is used as a separator :)

I changed all my '&' to 'and'. Luckily I didn't have that many, but it's a nuisance because they relate to game systems which explicitly use the '&' not an 'and' (e.g. Dungeons & Dragons).

There's also an issue with spaces in multi-word tags; most times the tag is treated as a single string, but if you're using advanced search syntax, each word is treated as a single string causing the search to fail.
Solution: replace the space with an underscore.

As an IT consultant, I always use the underscore "_" to emulate "&" as it separates the two (or more) tag values visually while not being a "special character" in many databases that can affect queries, SQL statements, and even better, CSV files where sometimes an autoimport will deliminate the columns by special characters such as / & : ; +

I recently noticed that my tags with slashes in them no longer brought up any books when I clicked on them. I'm now going through to edit the tags. I'm not sure when this issue came up because the tags worked when I first set them up and for many years afterwards. The problem has just come up recently.

>50 Bookmarque: It was a surprise when I noticed it. I didn't know the cause until someone suggested that it was the slashes so at least I got help from fellow LTers.
52RobertDay
>49 Familyhistorian:, >50 Bookmarque: That may be a change in the underlying system architecture that's been caused by system upgrades that LT programmers have no control over. There have been big changes in software over the past couple of years, and special characters like the slash are often the source of system bugs when changes like these take place. (Disclaimer: I'm neither a programmer nor an LT employee. But I do test software in the Day Job and this sounds suspicious to me.)
53jjwilson61
>52 RobertDay: LT programmers are making the changes to the system architecture so they definitely have control over it

As a word of warning : slashes ( / ) can have pretty much the same effect. So far, I'm doing well with using pipes ( | ) though. But there are no guarantees for future behaviour.
55Bookmarque
Yeah, most of the symbols in our tags like that don't work anymore. They haven't for months. Purportedly it's the new code, but with Tim's famous love for tags and individuality (no pick list of tags is a symptom of this even though it's oft-requested), it's a bit hard to swallow that there is no way around this.
56kristilabrie

Hah, you've got me convinced: cheese for me and costumes for my kid, done!
I will bring this up at our next all-staff meeting (next week), and see when we might be able to dive further into this. The factor of limitation, as always, is developer time and current projects that are taking priority.
Appreciate your continued patience in the meantime, we'll post any updates here. (This is a personal favorite "please fix" item, so I'm not forgetting about this!)

I have been replacing the forbidden symbols in my tags since the problem surfaced in 2021.
Since I only have a few more left (they are hard to to spot sometimes), I predict that the developers will have the problem solved immediately after I get the last ones replaced.

I HAVE COPIED THIS FROM A BUG REPORT THAT WAS CLOSED: THIS REFERS TO TAGS WITH MANY KINDS OF SPECIAL CHARACTERS, NOT JUST THE AMPERSAND "&"
>>>> I HAVE ALSO EDITED THIS REPORT TO MAKE IT EVEN CLEARER!
Looking at individual books, and selecting a TAG, all those with special characters ARE WORKING
For the entry:
책거리 Chaekgeori. Our shelves 우리 책꽂이 Ourselves 우리 자신
This is a catalogue of the Weltmuseum Wien - in English and Korean and with two pictures of my library inside (!!!). I am especially thankful to LT that we can record Korean (and most other non-Latin alphabets, see entry). Here both title and table of contents are given in Korean.
Here ist the LT link
https://www.librarything.com/work/28231792/details/217353060
It has two locations, one under Weltmuseum Wien catalogues. Here both the Tag "#JL X/18-WMWI" and #JL IX/11-Korea" work when you select them Tag using "#" as first character
https://www.librarything.com/tag/%23JL+X%252F18-WMWI
as well as the "/" TAGS, for example /Korea Collection/

as well as those without special characters, for example Weltmuseum Wien - Wien exhib. catalogs; folders; flyers
https://www.librarything.com/tag/Weltmuseum+Wien+-+Wien+%5Bexhib.+catalogs%3B+fo....
Résumé:
SPECIAL CHARACTERS SEEM TO WORK FINE IN THE INDIVIDUAL LT ENTRY; THEY CAN BE SELECTED AND A LIST PRODUCED.
HOWEVER, IN THE TAGS LISTING BOTH THOSE STARTING WITH "/" forward slash AND THOSE STARTING WITH "#" number sign DO NOT WORK
further explanation - go to home page, go to YOUR TAGS, select /North American Indians Collection/ (515)
you get as answer
Tag: %2FNorth American Indians Collection%2F x
No books found.
THOSE STARTING WITH "!" exclamation mark, I use only rarely DO WORK!
This all seems very strange to me - but those over 80 years old me do find the new age a bit daunting!

We have made some great progress with this and should have a fix out early next week! *knocking on wood*
Correction: maybe later this week, I didn't realize timspalding wanted much more extensive testing (which is a good thing). I'm working on that today.

We found a few places where it was breaking down. So we're fixing those and we'll test again. Maybe tomorrow? If not, then we'll probably wait until Monday.

OK! This should be fixed, now, if people can take a look and let us know if we missed anything. This was a BIG one to fix, I'm personally glad it's done. :)

Switched one of my tags from _and_ to &, and it works.

I've tested with &
It will display first page of results but calling next page or changing the view from list to covers (or vice versa) returns the error "No books found."
I have tried it with another user's library and get the same thing
Is this happening to anyone else?

Basically, when you change any of the sort/display settings, you get booted back ‘All collections’ even when you have a collection selected - and it still shows as selected. When you re-select the collection, the display reverts to being messed up.
Ah, I think I see what’s happened; I must have got half-way through editing my RPG tags to remove the spaces so some were RPG- and others RPG - .

Cleaned up my tags and re-edited them back to what they were before they went wrong. Spaces, & and / are working as expected, as is pagination of multi-page displays.
The weird thing with changing the tag browser display settings kicking you back to 'All collections' when another collection is selected still persists though. I'll give that bug report a poke.

Yes, you are right. But in displaying my books at my library for visitors (yes, often librarians) and the book is selected, I want to access the TAGS from the book.
For example
I show on the screen (176 cm - ten people watching)
Il poverello. Das Leben des Franz von Assisi
https://www.librarything.com/work/29847169/details/235631992
and somebody asks if I have another "Fiction" work about Franz of Assisi
I would then have to go to my books, then TAGS of which there are 46,535 …
Find the TAG /Francis of Assisi. Saint (1182-1226) - fiction/
OR
Go to all the TAGS under HOME "Your books" and find the TAG /Francis of Assisi. Saint (1182-1226) - fiction/
This is not practical and the TAGS in the book entry are "clickable" and should work.
OF course I could give examples of books about Vienna history, or the Habsburgs, or good grief Albrecht Dürer (over 100 books) where very specific TAGS are useful. But how to select them quickly?
Thanks for the answer though - it is nice to know others are watching these things. I am over 80 now and sometimes have "technical" difficulties!
If you are ever here in Vienna, I would love to take you to dinner and show you the library (not far from my flat, 6 rooms including compact shelving).

An additional case of tag names malfunctioning—this time tags with apostrophes, which I had not encountered before (previously, it was other special characters)—that might be related to this bug. When looking at a specific tag on the Your books page, I am unable to navigate to the second page of books with that tag, nor am I able to change the column by which I am organizing the books under that tag. Invariably, I get the "no books found" message.
To reproduce:
1. Go to the "children's fiction" tag, on my Your books page: https://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?tag=children%27s+fiction&view=Abiga...
2. Try to navigate to the second page of results / choose a different field to organize by / etc
3. You will get a blank page, and the "No books found" message.

Hopefully someone else will check this. As of today it seem that the slashes in TAGS "/" is working at the MAIN LEVEL but not at DETAILS LEVEL. Here is a repeat of >98johninvienna.
This was no longer working, see >99johninvienna.

Yes I choose this one because my library is pictured twice in the inside cover - the book is about paintings of bookshelves, libraries, etc. in Korea
If this success stays at least at the MAIN LEVEL then for me the battle has been won. But, as previously noted, something working today does not imply it will be working tomorrow.
I have checked this twice with PREVIEW before posting it !
I AM VERY THANKFUL LT Staff are working on this problem. I am anticipating the opening of my library in the Spring of this year and it would be great if this BUG is squashed!
At home with SECOND COVID-19 infection (after 4 vaccinations!)
Greetings, JOHN
