your thoughts on hotel teas

I'm staying in a hotel in Ohio Amish country and the hotel had some tea in the room
It was kinda nice (I usually have mine in bags with 2 sachets of artificial sweetener)

I know some might think bag tea/hotel tea to be "less than optimal",but I want to know so I can educate myself

Even if the tea is decent, my experience of hotel tea is that the conditions under which one must brew it do not contribute to good flavour. It's not quite as bad if there's a kettle, but too often one has to use the coffee maker to heat the water and it always tastes off.

>2 tardis: exactly! I always stick to black tea because of this since the bagged brands usually steep at boiling for 3-5 min. It works in a pinch.

In recent years, most of the US hotels I've stayed at had Bigelow brand, which isn't terrible.

I can't remember what the last hotel tea I had was, but it's the usual thing with making it in the coffee maker (which always tastes slightly like coffee even when I run a clean cup through it before-hand). It usually comes with a packet that has sugar, "whitener" (non-dairy creamer), something that's trying to be a stir stick, and a pathetic napkin. If I know I'm going to a hotel for a couple of days or more, I bring my own stuff.

I don't think I've ever had tea in a fancy hotel that wasn't in the dining area. On a cruise there were various tea and coffee stations with hot water taps and such, so there was no need for anything in the room. (Not that it would have fit anywhere.)

Most hotels in UK would have a proper electric kettle in the room for making tea. When I'm in a hotel in the USA I do as others above, and jam a tea bag into the coffee maker in the place where you're supposed to put those nasty little plastic sachet thingies. The first time I came across one of those coffee making machines was about five years ago in New York, where I was staying at the Hilton (not at my own expense, I hasten to add!) and I had to call reception to get them to send someone up to show me how to use the bloody thing.

There is no way to wash out the weird taste from a hotel coffeemaker, so I bring the strongest stuff I can rummage out of my own stash when I travel. Good Earth makes a Hot and Spicy cinnamon tea that cancels out some of the plastic "bleccch."

I bring my own tea bags (strong black). If there's a microwave in the room, I will boil the water that way rather than use a coffee maker. But I have noticed that more and more hotels are putting in keurig-style/coffee pod coffee makers. Since for those, the coffee never actually is in the machine or a pot, I find that if I pop out the pod holder, I can use it to get a cup of hot water with no coffee taste.

I've found some "do it yourself" tea bags. I.e. they are empty so you can fill them with some good tea rather than go hunting for tea bags without fruit flavouring or worse. Our holiday apartment provided a simple water-boiler so I made close to perfect tea each afternoon.

I generally bring a pocket full of tea with me whenever I go travelling with one of everything I’ve got at home, as well as several of my favourite breakfast tea. Sometimes, the hotel or wherever it is I’m staying at will have good tea, but often it’s Lipton’s or some generic brand, and in those cases, preparation definitely pays off. As for getting water, I find the best thing to do is to go to a local restaurant and ask them for hot water—it generally works out better than trusting the hotel not to use a coffee-contaminated pot.

>11 Artoriarius: I tend to do that as well, though mostly for long trips. I'm in Canada so there's usually a good chance the default black tea is Red Rose, (Lipton in a bag is still something of a novelty for me) which I'm perfectly okay with. It's just dealing with the coffee makers that cuts the appeal for me.

That, and the whitener. Ew.

>12 WeeTurtle: Ooh...it would be nice to live in a world where Red Rose was the norm! So much better than American food service grade teas.
