Great New Titles (Reader's Choice 2021?)

huhtikuu 8, 2021, 3:38 pm

The mailer doesn't say "Reader's Choice" anywhere but the styling suggests that it probably is this year's set. Eight (8) titles, series 3762.

The Night Horseman (Max Brand)
Red Dragon (Thomas Harris)
The Secret Adversary (Agatha Christie)
The Tale of a Tub (Jonathan Swift)
Tarzan the Untamed (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
The Third Man (Graham Greene)
The Woman in White (Wilkie Collins)
The Worm Ouroboros (Eric Rucker Eddison)

>1 treereader: Thank you for posting. I have not received it yet and wondered if they were going to continue the "Reader's Choice" this year.

huhtikuu 8, 2021, 4:07 pm

>1 treereader: What is the cost per book? Thanks

Muokkaaja: huhtikuu 8, 2021, 4:23 pm

>3 uncledaveh:
Ordering from the mailer, $75 + $4.95s/h each. Ordering elsewhere, $85 + $4.95s/h each.

I recently started collecting again after a long hiatus, and I'm not familiar with these particular promotions. Are these typically sold as a set only, or are they also available for purchase individually?

huhtikuu 8, 2021, 5:03 pm

>5 whytewolf1:
Whichever way you prefer, though, they tend to ship out over the course of a few months to a half year. They are implicitly limited but I don't think EP ever states the limitation. Some here buy the whole set, whereas others, like me, just grab one or a few titles of interest. Normally, we expect a list like this to come out each year with maybe 10-12 titles, and explicitly advertised as a Reader's Choice series.

huhtikuu 8, 2021, 7:02 pm

Would you mind sharing the order codes for the books?

There aren't any order codes listed. Well, at least, not on a per-title basis. This particular series is identified as 3762, so the codes should eventually come out to 3762-001, 3762-002, ..., 3762-008. One might assume that the order they're described (alphabetical by title) will line up numerically but if you try and order before finding out for sure, I'd recommend just using 3762 and the title name(s).

huhtikuu 8, 2021, 9:25 pm

>8 Bob_Reader:

Not really. There's a low-resolution basic front/spine view of Red Dragon, which is all red, and the same for Tarzan (all maroon). That's it for the mailer.

huhtikuu 9, 2021, 7:24 am

I haven't bought anything directly from Easton Press before. Will these titles also be available on the website at some point? Really keen on a nice edition of The Worm Ouroboros.

huhtikuu 10, 2021, 2:53 am

>6 treereader: Thanks very much for the explanation. :)

huhtikuu 10, 2021, 7:20 pm

I have searchd the EP site and cannot find these and I have not received a mailer.

huhtikuu 11, 2021, 3:36 pm

>13 Frank_Zwolinski: The Great New Titles / Reader's Choice books do not show up on the EP site until all of the orders have been filled. After that, any remaining Titles are listed.

Muokkaaja: huhtikuu 14, 2021, 11:08 am

>1 treereader: Thank you again for posting the information on the 2021 Great New Titles / Reader's Choice. I still have not received a mailer, but I ordered the following 4 Titles today.

1) The Night Horseman by Max Brand
2) The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie
3) The Third Man by Graham Greene
4) The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins

huhtikuu 25, 2021, 12:02 pm

Nice selection

huhtikuu 29, 2021, 9:47 pm

I have lost my brochure and cannot get customer services to send another, because they are all working from home. Does someone have an unused one they are willing to scan (crossing out their own name) that they ar ewilling to send me?

I would like to place an order.

Thank you,

huhtikuu 30, 2021, 5:06 am

If you can’t get a scanned one, you could always just call and place an order over the phone. I ordered two of the books this way and it was really quick.

huhtikuu 30, 2021, 1:48 pm

>17 Frank_Zwolinski: I did not receive a brochure this year, so I just ordered 4 books via e-mail from Maryann.

huhtikuu 30, 2021, 2:04 pm

I could swear that someone posted a scanned copy of the brochure somewhere, as I distinctly remember the striking binding for Red Dragon, but I'll be damned if I can find it now. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

huhtikuu 30, 2021, 3:13 pm

More info on Readers Choice 2021 can be found at:

Muokkaaja: toukokuu 4, 2021, 12:34 pm

So, I called Easton today and ordered:

Tarzan the Untamed (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
The Woman in White (Wilkie Collins)

The good news is that I was told that once you order any of the Reader's Choice volumes, you will be put on the list to receive future solicitations for the series.

Looking back at volumes I might like to track down from recent years and then looking on ABE and eBay to try to locate copies, I discovered that titles in this series seem to be pretty scarce and when they are available, they're typically pretty pricey. So, it really seems to be a good idea to grab any of these you want as soon as they're solicited.

toukokuu 4, 2021, 1:45 pm

>22 whytewolf1: lol it is a good idea to grab any of these

toukokuu 9, 2021, 10:29 am

>22 whytewolf1: Don’t hold your breath about being put on their mailer list. I’ve ordered from the Reader’s Choice list several times (after others have posted their fliers here on LT) and have yet to ever receive the annual Reader’s Choice flyer. I’ve received their catalogs for around 20 years but never a Reader’s Choice mailer 😏

toukokuu 9, 2021, 10:38 am

>22 whytewolf1:
I wasn’t getting any mailers or emails a few years ago despite being a frequent customer and attempting to sign up for them on several occasions. I finally created a new email address just for EP and now I get about one a day, but still never a Readers Choice announcement. Maybe they want me to buy more expensive things.

toukokuu 9, 2021, 12:06 pm

>24 GOBOGIE: >25 jroger1: That's so odd. They're so aggressive about marketing otherwise. I wonder why they want to keep these offerings super secret. :P

Well, anyway, as long as the good folks in this group continue to post the new offerings each year, I guess it's not too much trouble to pick up the phone and order them. :)

toukokuu 9, 2021, 12:30 pm

>26 whytewolf1:

Ask them to specifically send you the mailer. If you don’t receive it within a week’s time, call again. Force the issue.

toukokuu 9, 2021, 12:40 pm

>27 treereader: Thanks. Probably not a bad idea.

toukokuu 9, 2021, 5:59 pm

>28 whytewolf1:

It always seems that, eventually, if a problem is difficult enough, customer service sends the issue to Joe to solve and then it gets solved. The problem, in your case, is the disassociation between marketing and your contact info, not you calling repeatedly to get something corrected.

Sorry to ‘Joe’ for suggesting that you are the all-knowing solver of all issues at EP. The evidence is hard to ignore, though!

toukokuu 9, 2021, 6:00 pm

I did receive the mailer for the Reader's Choice selections for the last few years, but not this year (for some reason).

elokuu 12, 2021, 12:00 pm

Has anyone started receiving the books yet?

elokuu 12, 2021, 12:13 pm

>31 RRCBS: I have 3 on order, and there's no indication in my account info that they're shipping anytime soon.

elokuu 13, 2021, 7:52 pm

I was told at one point that they should start shipping in mid-July. Obviously that did not happen.

elokuu 13, 2021, 8:29 pm

>33 uncledaveh: I always consider release dates for collectible book publishers to be more aspirational than dependable. :P

elokuu 15, 2021, 10:00 pm

>34 whytewolf1: Thanks. I do understand.

Muokkaaja: elokuu 17, 2021, 4:34 pm

Reader's Choice update:
My account shows that 'The Third Man' from Reader's Choice XVII is expected to ship by Friday August 20, 2021.

elokuu 17, 2021, 10:56 pm

>36 uncledaveh: My account shows that Tarzan The Untamed is due to ship on the same date. I also ordered 2 other RC editions that are no longer listed with my orders, so based on that and the update on your copy of The Third Man, I'm going to presume that they're probably all just about ready to ship.

elokuu 17, 2021, 11:01 pm

>37 whytewolf1: Thanks. I hope so. I ordered a total of four.

elokuu 24, 2021, 1:02 pm

So, an update on the shipping of the RC selections. Veteran purchasers of this series already know this I'm sure, but for the newbies out there ( like me), it seems that these editions ship as a regular subscription would, meaning one per month until all of your selections have shipped. I happened to speak with EP customer service today about another matter, and they were able to clarify this for me.

elokuu 24, 2021, 5:32 pm

>39 whytewolf1: If it works as it has in previous years, you can request that they ship as they become available. That's what I always do.

elokuu 24, 2021, 11:32 pm

>40 uncledaveh: Ah... good to know.

syyskuu 15, 2021, 1:58 pm

>42 saintmelville: Do you know if Silence of the Lambs is getting released in the same fashion as Red Dragon?

syyskuu 15, 2021, 11:24 pm

>43 Gilded_Tomes1: it was released years ago, often found in the secondary market for 2 or 3 times the original cost. I believe it was released as part of a readers choice selection back then.

syyskuu 16, 2021, 7:16 am

>44 judgethatcher: Ahhhh, that makes sense. Does EP ever re-release readers' choice books?

syyskuu 16, 2021, 7:18 am

syyskuu 16, 2021, 7:22 am

Has anyone read Tale of a Tub? I love the RC books and know they sell out quickly.

syyskuu 16, 2021, 7:46 am

>47 RRCBS: I have. An lesser known work by Jonathan Swift, whose more popular tome is Gulliver's Travels.

lokakuu 13, 2021, 8:54 am

I had ordered Tale of a Tub from EP months ago. Up until last week it said it would ship on October 12, and I was looking forward to receiving it. But now I see that they've changed it to "now accepting orders" and "this product will be available December 10." They must be having production issues.

Muokkaaja: lokakuu 14, 2021, 1:51 am

Is anybody else put off by the Red Dragon cover design? There is a literal dragon’s head on the cover and a dragon on the spine, but this book has nothing to do with an actual dragon. There are no dragons in this book. No dragons are referred to in the book. The Dragon in the title comes from the William Blake watercolor of Satan. Now I guess I can use my imagination by understanding that Satan in great literature appears symbolically as a dragon. The Faerie Queene, which is where Blake got the idea no doubt, is an example of Satan appearing as a dragon.
I find the dragon on the cover an interesting design choice. I wonder if anyone else does.

Muokkaaja: lokakuu 15, 2021, 5:26 pm

>50 mad_yosemite: Suntup's Numbered Edition of Red Dragon comes with a "slipcase enclosure covered in a unique brocade kimono fabric with a brilliant metallic sheen" depicting what looks like red Chinese dragons. Although like you said the novel has nothing to do with an actual dragon, according to Wikipedia "Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it." Perhaps this is the symbolism both publishers had in mind for their cover/slipcase design...

On the other hand, I have recently seen a listing for a Halloween bundle of books containing Dracula, Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories and A Scarlet Letter. Speaking of judging the book by its cover/title :). I wonder why In Cold Blood was not included :D...

>52 mad_yosemite: Tiger design was taken by the signed edition of The Life of Pi. Also, you have to consider Blake's Tyger's metaphorical meaning as well as overall spiritual meaning of a tiger as an animal.

Perhaps one day, Easton Press will commit to publishing a four volume set of Hannibal Lecter books that will include all the titles - Red Dragon, Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal, Hannibal Rising...

lokakuu 20, 2021, 3:43 pm

I received The Night Horseman by Max Brand today.

huhtikuu 16, 2022, 2:23 pm

Hopefully, we should be seeing the 2022 selections any day now, if last year is a guide. Has anyone seen anything yet?

huhtikuu 16, 2022, 2:29 pm

>55 whytewolf1: waiting in breathless anticipation.!

huhtikuu 17, 2022, 10:26 pm

huhtikuu 18, 2022, 12:13 pm

I've been looking for them.

kesäkuu 4, 2022, 2:51 pm

So, no Reader's Choice titles this year?

kesäkuu 5, 2022, 4:07 pm

>50 mad_yosemite:
>51 EPsonNY:

I'm late to this, but still: The Blake painting (or paintings) is one reference in the novel, the other is to a Chinese character used on a mah-jong tile, which is called Red Dragon. The character who identifies with Blake's Great Red Dragon uses that symbol. It is also used on the numbered Suntup edition. The Asian dragons on the slipcase make sense in the mah-jong context and due to the fact that the character is influenced by his experiences in the Far East.

All that being said, while the design of the Suntup edition makes sense, the one by Easton Press does less so. It looks more like fantasy dragons than either reference from the novel.

kesäkuu 28, 2022, 5:56 pm

Unfortunately, I opted out of the annual Reader’s Choice titles from 2021 due to the price increase. I had been buying these for years and really wanted four of the 2021 titles but can’t justify spending $85.95 per title especially with the current economy!

kesäkuu 28, 2022, 11:14 pm

>61 Tolkienfan:

That number sounds high. Was that the regular price - the one everyone sees by the time it hits the website? I thought the early order price was lower…
