We have a list of the books from the library of George Washington Carver!

I've started a profile https://www.librarything.com/profile/GeorgeWCarver and we are ready to begin adding books and would welcome volunteers!

If you are interested, please respond in this thread and I'll message you with the login info and some pages to work on (we can't post the entire file).

If you have a specific topic you'd be interested in cataloging, let me know that too. Some of the (idiosyncratic!) catalog headings include:

After these two sections is a list of titles alphabetically; it's not clear whether these are different titles or the same bunch organized differently. Once we do the first lot, we'll be able to tell more easily what the later section is and whether we'll need to add those too.

I'll update this post as folks claim sections. We mostly have edition-level info (publisher/date) so the books should be fairly straightforward to add, I hope!

Hey. Do you have a sense of scale? I'll take a section at least. And I'll take something boring, so other people can do poetry or whatever. But I'd love a sense of scale.

3JBD1
helmikuu 26, 2021, 5:30 pm

They vary a lot; I'd say the bulk of the sections average between 20 and 30 titles? Not huge at all. Some more, some less (Histories and Medical Books for example are together on one page, totaling 15 titles).

4timspalding

Okay, set me up for something others won't necessarily want. How about forestry?

I've entered the first one, two differences from the LoC entry. First is easy. Changed the printing date to match the list. But I have three forms of Tolstoy's name. LoC's form, LT's form, and the way it is on the list. I changed it to match the list. Is that what you want?

63timspalding

Done with textbooks. A few things I've learned:

1. WorldCat is your friend. I've found it invaluable both for finding libraries that have a title and for getting the title based on bad or illegible information.
2. For textbooks at least, midwestern colleges and universities are the gold. Carver's textbooks were very often from the midwest, so Illinois, Chicago, Notre Dame were all good.

I'm going to take a break on a new section until I get some real work done today ;)

I've updated my lot which was fun, but ran into a couple of things:

I had a Tolstoy issue too - "Tales and parables by tolstoi". I found no sign of this one, but editions of Master and Man shared both this as a subtitle and publisher/ year, so I've added it. (Just read "no data is better than bad data" Should I delete it? )

"Treasure by Albert Payson Tehune"
Tehune didn't turn up in overcat/LoC search but *Terhune* does - but no sign of this title that I could track down. Help!

"In Castle Colony" - In Castle *and* Colony comes up with matching author so I've added that.

MarthaJeanne said "People and libraries have different preferences for how to capitalize. In the end, it doesn't matter, and nobody should insist that their way is the only right way."

I insisted? I did not. I saw a potential need and offered a tool that I appreciate. Book titles being capitalized is the norm. I imagine some people would appreciate a handy tool. If you don't that's fine, I don't see why you need to put negative connotations to my post. Just ignore it.

>108 Corinne2020: >110 MarthaJeanne: - useful tools indeed, but for these purposes of cataloging these libraries, just getting the information into the system is the main object. Editing each title for capitalization, &c. would be far too time-consuming.

ETA: Regarding the edit/additional information regarding the LOC- Okay. I was simply offering a tool in case some would like to use it. I guess it rubbed you the wrong way when I mentioned noticing a lack of capitalization. I was using it as a segue to sharing the tool. I understand it is not necessary or required.

I'll take a section, if one is still available--not picky about topic.

Hi- I've finished my section "History Books and Others", but have a couple of questions about one item on the second page: "State of Alabama Department of Alabama Official and Statistical Register of (1930?)". I'm not sure if I'm reading the date correctly-- it looks like 1930 in the publication name but not so much in the date. And if it IS 1930, I can't find that particular year anywhere, but the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History has the best collection of these annual registers, covering a huge time period. They just seem to be missing the 1930 edition. Here is their site: https://archive.org/details/@alabama_department_of_archives_and_history?and%5B%5...
If 1930 is the right date, should I manually add the title using the publishing information available for the surrounding years? Thanks!! Otherwise, my section is done.

I think right now we're just waiting on folks who have claimed sections to add their titles. Once those are in, then I need to figure out whether the second list—organized alphabetically by title (argh)—is an overlap of the first or if it's different things - so far it looks more like the former than the latter. Will keep everyone posted.

https://www.librarything.com/work/26171272 is messy. I changed the dates to match the list. Combining with recommended? LoC author is probably at least as accurate spelling as the list.

MarthaJeanne

https://www.librarything.com/work/7960512/covers/197142704 is almost certainly Well Springs. Entered manually and corrected.

First page done.

(MarthaJeanne)
1) https://www.librarything.com/work/1942941/197161314
List says author is A J Johnson. Apparently he was publisher. Hitchcock as author makes lots more sense.

2) https://www.librarything.com/work/26173332/book/197161869 is close. I have not edited anything except tag.

3) https://www.librarything.com/work/26173433
Information cut and pasted from WorldCat. (Probably NYPL)

I've got to take a break.

Muokkaaja: maaliskuu 5, 2021, 4:57 pm

Since it's been three days, and in the interests of finishing up, I'm going to ask that folks who have outstanding sections finish them up by noon (EST) on Sunday, 7 March. If they're still free then, I will post the available sections and open them up for re-claiming. Thanks!

If you have claimed a section and need help or don't know how to get started, just ask and I'll be more than happy to assist! (And/or if you really want to do it but just can't do it by Sunday, let me know that too and we'll leave it for you!)

Okay! Everything is in from the first section of the list. Now I'm going to go through the remaining list and see if there's more to be added or if it's just a repeat of the list we've added, just organized alphabetically. So far it seems like the latter is the case and there won't be much more to be added, but I'll keep you all posted!
