New books in 2020

What books do you look forward to in 2021?

I'm looking forward to
- Hand & Eye: Wind in the Willows
- St. James Park Press: 1984
- Centipede Press: Dune (let's see if it will really be available in February)

Are there any new releases one should be on the lookout for?

Edit: changed the year to 2021 as >3 kdweber: kindly pointed out.

My perennial favorite, Midnight Paper Sales, is expected to have a big release in 2021. I've heard the tentative title "American Crow," but not many details about it. Knowing Mr. Schanilec's record, it should be a real work of art.

>3 kdweber: of course I meant 2021. I'm still not used to writing the new year. I almost missed updating the year in some documents today as well. Unfortunately I can not change the title anymore.

>4 Sorion: I have been saving a bit of money in the last few months, so I hope I can afford them. It depends a bit on the installment plans for 1984.

I think Rich from Lyra's Books will again have something from Gaiman this year, but this is just based on something I remember reading in one of his posts in IG.

Also Suntup might publish Murakami, could be good depending on the illustrations.

>1 c_schelle: I'm looking forward to 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' as well.

>6 dlphcoracl: That looks lovely!

The Prototype Press has an edition of M.F.K. Fisher's 'Consider the Oyster', with illustrations by Martin Mazorra, planned for this year (according to a recent newsletter).

Also have interest in the Deep Wood Press edition of 'The Hunter Gracchus'.

Has there been news on The Hunter Gracchus? I joined the mailing list for that like 6 years ago lol. Haven't received a single update.

>7 filox: If Rich publishes another Gaiman it will jump ahead of everything else for me. As well if Suntup publishes a nice edition of IQ84 I might have to purchase my first Suntup edition.

This group is such a detriment to my finances.

I don't know if Lyra's Books is planning on doing another Gaiman book, but I did see that Hand and Eye (who printed the Lyra's edition) is planning on doing one: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHimD9YhFR0/

Also, I think this may be an interesting edition coming out of Titan and Weald: https://titanandweald.com/section/489483-Cowboy-Nute-by-Dave-Snyder.html

Mad Parrot Press is also supposed to be publishing The Wind in the Willows. Since last year, actually, but understandably there were delays. Was actually hoping to get an update from them, the last one was quite a few months ago.

The Machine Stops was also to be published by Chad. To be honest I get confused by all of the imprints, between Chester River Press, Mad Parrot Press, Deep Wood Press.

Looking forward to Lyra's Press' next publication also; I hope he announces it soon, though I have to say I'd probably buy the phone book if he designed and bound it.

Suntup sounds like they have a few good publications coming up, based on hints they gave. Currently they're doing Silence of the Lambs, designed the same as Red Dragon. I'm actually looking for a copy to match my Red Dragon. March sounds like it'll be another McCarthy book, which would be interesting, as The Road was a beautiful edition.

The Great Gatsby is now public domain, so we could see something interesting from somewhere like the FS, maybe a LE? Also looking forward to whatever else they have up their sleeve from a LE perspective.

Maybe Foolscap will "print" an experimental Great Gatsby in the form of a 1920's Model-T. The letters of the novel will toot cheerfully from the exhaust pipe. ❤️Foolscap❤️

Speaking of Foolscap, they were planning on releasing ‘Brief Loves That Live Forever’ by Andreï Makine with illustrations by Vladimir Zimakov but as I thought, no news on this front. I assume they'll be busy binding their Mandeviles for the foreseeable future.

Interesting...it's probably out of my price range anyways considering the 'Penal Colony' pricing :(.
Maybe if they are just selling the textblock...

It looks like Pegana Press is doing a third installment of their Dark Dreamlands series, with Michael Hutter illustrating once again: https://peganapress.com/h-p-lovecraft

Very much looking forward to this one.

Also, Nawakum Press added a digital prospectus for Cascadia: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/54ec0387e4b03ce768b7f442/t/6025d960b32af7...

This is another one on my short-list for this year (thanks to >6 dlphcoracl: for the enablement).

>14 U_238: WishIReadMore_:
Just today I've responded on the thread about The Wind in the Willows but since you've brought up the various press names I thought I'd comment.

All along since 1992 I've been putting out book editions as Deep Wood Press.

James Dissette and I met when he moved to Michigan in the early 2000s and needed to complete a book he was printing for Washington College in MD and came here to use my shop. Later when he moved back to Chestertown he worked in a fine used bookstore and the owner became interested in publishing fine press. I was brought in as a partner to do the printing, design consultation and binding prototypes and Chester River Press was born with our first book being The Chesapeake Voyages of Captain John Smith and then later our edition of Heart of Darkness along with some smaller projects in between and beyond. Our partnership with the bookstore owner dissolved but James kept the Chester River imprint going for some of his "work for hire" non-fine press publishing. When we decided to do Wind in the Willows we decided it was time for a new press name separate from Chester River and our former partners.

Yes, The Hunter Gracchus is still happening under DWP. Yes, James and I plan to follow up with The Machine Stops under Mad Parrot.

Thanks to all of you for keeping us motivated!

22DWPress
maaliskuu 4, 2021, 3:32 pm

>21 ultrarightist: The big hold up for Gracchus has been reworking the intaglio prints I did for the larger format. All but one of them is complete now so I hope to pick the project back up after Wind in the Willows is bound this summer. I will announce progress on my blog as usual.

This is one of those books that is taking 6 years but that's ok with me since nobody else is involved with this one. I try not to release things until I'm happy with them.

>6 dlphcoracl: >18 const-char-star: Thanks for the early heads up, recently received my copy (deluxe edition) of Cascadia. Wow, what an impressive piece of work! Bound in partial leather with hand-made pastepaper by Meridith Broberg. The Japanese cloth covered clamshell with leather spine is so beautiful I worry I might need to protect it. Even the extra portfolio chemise is well built. The base paper is mould-made Zerkall but Wagener's engravings are printed on many different hand-made papers: Bicchu and Yamagampi from Japan, Saint Armand from Canada, and Hook from Indiana (USA). Haiku poetry by Christopher Herold and an interesting essay by William Dietrich. Certainly among the top five books in my library. Highly recommended.

Or is these one of those "if you have to ask you can't afford it" kind of thing?

Also, Phil sent out an update on the H&E Press version of TWITW; looks like it's coming along nicely.

>30 const-char-star: - I do wish I'd been able to fit this one into the budget this year, but probably not to be.

>12 921Jack: - I was quick enough to grab a copy of 'The Case of Death and Honey' and am really looking forward to seeing this one progress. I've loved Gianni's work for years (not to mention a lot of what Gaiman has written), so this was an easy decision for me.

>37 jeremyjm: Had a chance to speak with Mr. Schanilec this weekend at a Book Fair. He took us through a mock-up of American Crow - stunning work. Whatever he decides to price it at (he mentioned around $1200) it will be worth every penny. Was also able to pick up a quarter bound leather copy of his 2005 work, "Mayflies of the Driftless Region" and talk fly-fishing with him. What a treat!

I just received my copy of Cascadia today, and you can add my voice to the chorus of praise. It is definitely one of the top books in my collection—a stunning homage to the forests of the Northwest, to haiku, and to the art of the book.
