Clue Goes Back To Her Roots in 2021

Here I am again. I read 56 ROOTS last year. I just compared the current number of ROOTS to the beginning of the year and I have 9 less on the shelf and 18 more on the Kindle. This proves something very important, math doesn't work!

I hope everyone has a great year of reading ahead and my advice is don't stress over having ROOTS. Before you take that to heart you might want to reread the paragraph above!

Luanne, I understand that bit about more ROOTS than last year even after clearing so many, but I've resolved just to enjoy the books as they come along.

This year my Category challenge theme is climbing Mt. TBR so that should hopefully keep me reading a bunch of ROOTs even if I acquire more.

Enjoy your reading in 2021!

Thanks to everyone, I'm so glad we're in the new year and I hope you find some great things to read on your self!

JANUARY

I've read 3 this month:

1. The Devil's Cave by Martin Walker 4*
2. Nella Last's War by Nella Last 4*
3. The Miss Dennis School of Writing by Alice Steinbach 2.5*

Scheduled for February: 4

FEBRUARY

I only read 3 ROOTS this month instead of the 4 I had planned. I worked in a couple of library books and won't finish the 4th for a couple of days so I'll count it next month. I've watched more TV (movies) this month than I usually do so I didn't read as much overall as usual. Soon I'll be reading in the rocking chair on the front porch. Can't wait!

4. The Women in Black by Madeleine s. John 3.5*
5. Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill by Sonia Purnell 4.5*
6. Tiny Love Stories: True Tales of Love in 100 Words or Less by Daniel Jones 3.0*

MARCH

I had such good intentions but the library holds all came in at once so I only read 1 ROOT! I'm already reading a book for an April CAT and its a ROOT so hopefully I'll get back on track!

7. The Dig by John Preston

If you've seen the Netflix movie of this title, this is the book it was based on.

>14 clue: I enjoyed the Netflix movie - though I wouldn't have minded there being rather more about the actual dig and find. Did you enjoy the book?

16clue
Muokkaaja: maaliskuu 30, 2021, 8:52 am

>15 Caramellunacy: I did enjoy it, the movie follows it excect for the romance. I've read a lot of reviews that were angry over the treatment of Peggy Pigget in the movie. Although she was an archeologist her purpose in the movie seemed to be to add some romance. It was interesting that none of that was in the book. The book is not as sentimental as the movie. It's short and a quick read.

APRIL

I've let myself fall behind with posting and I think I read another ROOT but I can't think of what it was if I did. I'll add it to next month when it comes to me, obviously not a memoriable read. Tonight I'm going to book club, this one meets at an independent bookstore and last month was the first time for me to be back. I meet with another book club that I enjoy more, I've been meeting with it over 10 years and I've really missed it. We aren't meeting yet, we meet at the library and all their services won't be available until June so another month to go! April reads are:

8. Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
9. Murder in Old Bombay by Nev March
10. Thirty-three Teeth by Colin Cotterill
11. Crazy Brave by Jo Harjo

I've got to pick up the pace if I'm going to meet my goal of 50! So any new books out that i'd like to read too!

Hi Luanne, the weather is not that nice, certainly not for May. Today should be sunny. It's only 11:23 a.m. here and I just had a walk in the neighborhood. So now I'm waiting for the clouds to disappear.

I hope you can pick up the pace to get those ROOTs.

Muokkaaja: heinäkuu 1, 2021, 2:13 pm

I read 4 ROOTS in May. My sister was in the hospital two weeks and I spent a lot of time with her and couldn't focus on reading when I was there. She's home and doing well and I hope I'm able to read my plan in June. Of the four, one went into the TBR pile in 2013 and when one is that old I feel like I really accomplished something!

MAY
12. The Gauguin Collection by Estelle Ryan 4*
13. The Courtyard by Marcia Willett 3.5*
14. The Children Return by Martin Walker 4*
15. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans 4*

I actually read a book titled Death Undercover where I show The Children Return. This book, seventh in the Bruno Chief of Police series, has at least 3 titles and I can't get a touchstone to work for the title I actually read. If you are reading this series, beware.

17. The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams
18. Thirteen Guests by J Jefferson Farjeon
19. The House at Baker Street by Michelle Birkby

Still behind on ROOTS and won't catch up until August, maybe even September, but still plan to meet the goal of 50 by the end of the year. The five I read this month were all good and were diverse even though three were mysteries.

JULY
21. Scarlet Ribbons - Kate Quinn and others
22. Summer at the Comfort Food Café - Debbie Johnson
23. A Death of No Importance - Mariah Fredericks
24. Frederica - Georgette Heyer
25. Pleading Guilty - Scott Turow (DNF)

It seems like a year ago I read the first book for this month! Why it seems that way I don't know. Frederica is a reread and I put it right back on the shelf to read in another few years. Of the others, Scarlet Ribbons, a novel about women who were active in the French Revolution was the best, a 4.5* read for me. I got tired of Pleading Guilty after I'd read about 75% of it, maybe because I put it down for a couple of weeks and then went back to it. The good news is, there is no shortage of books for next month. Or any month after that for several years in fact!

AUGUST

26. The Steal by C. W. Gortner
27. The Broken Spine by Dorothy St. John
28. The Miser of Mayfair by Marion Chesney
29. The Dante Connection by Estelle Ryan
30. The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman
31. Sobremesa by Josephine Caminos Oria
32. Someone is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe by Nan Lyons

Most of what I read this month were short books on Kindle. I'm having pain with my left hand, another trigger finger I think, I've already had surgery for two, and Kindle is more comfortable than a book. My favorites for the month were The Miser of Mayfair, the first book in the A House for the Season series and The Dante Connection, the second in the Genevieve Lenard series.

The Miser of Mayfair is a romance but I'm reluctant to call it that because we are well into the book before there is one. The best things about the book are the humor and the servants at No. 67 Clarges Street. Apparently the series features different renters of the townhouse there and I'll read the second in the series if the servants remain, they were such good characters!

There are a few things I don't like about the way the Genevieve Lenard series is written but overall it's pretty intriguing. Again it's primarily the characters. Genevieve is an austic genius who works for an insurance company that covers premier artwork. In the first book she was used to and certainly preferred to work alone, primarily online, to investigate possible thefts. Four other people, each bringing a different skill to the table came into the investigation and they continued to be involved in the second book. I'm interested in where the series goes from here, crimes in the first and second book were related, but I'm hoping for something new in the third.

I'm also looking forward to cooler weather and being able to read on the porch in a few weeks!

>29 clue: I hope your hand feels better soon. I'm more comfortable holding an ereader now too - thanks to RSI and previous wrist surgery in my right hand. I also have a semi-frozen right shoulder (I really am falling to bits!!) so all that adds up to not loving holding heavy books for long. The kobo is a godsend.

I hope your finger pain eases and that you won't need another operation.
I like to read the heavy books on Kindle, like Moby Dick or Dickens. It's painful to keep one of those physical behemoths open.
I saw the movie of ...The Great Chefs of Europe when I was a kid, but pretty much all I recall about it is that it introduced me to ice cream bombes. Yeah, that stuck with me :-D. It sounds like a fun story though.

>29 clue: Some good reading there, Luanne.

For big books I sometimes use a book-seat made by a friend of mine. But I need a table to put that on so that's only indoors. When I'm outside I hold the books on my lap. I've some pain in my left hand just under my thumb but that is not really keeping me from holding books in my hands.

SEPTEMBER

I'm stumbling along with my reading. Surgery for my left hand is the 29th of October and reading will pick up then hopefully. I'm not ready to lower my goal...still think I can hit 50. The The Madness of Crowds, the new Louise Penny, and The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen will be favorites of the year. The Women of Baker Street by Michelle Brikby is good too. It's a mystery with Mrs. Hudson and Mary Watson teaming up again. Mrs. Watson is certain she witnessed a murder late at night while she was hospitalized. This is the second book in the series, published in 2017, and the last so far. I hope more will come along.

Hi Luanne, all the best wishes for your surgery. I hope you can still read on your kindle. A bookseat is easy to use. Thanks to everyone for their encouragement with the hand problem. I had surgery, there was a little more to do than the Dr. expected. I had fallen one night when it was very hot. I was in a flower bed watering when it was pitch dark, stumbled over something and fell flat. When I did my hand hit the edge of the sidewalk and did some damage. But I had PT after the surgery and all seems to be well. I'm so glad I can tpye again, not to mention hold an actual book!

NOVEMBER

I didn't read any books that I don't own this month because I was afraid I wasn't going to hit my goal of 50 by the end of next month. I tried one as a second read and decided not to finish it although it was a National Book Award Winner. Even now I'm wondering if I ought to put it back on the shelf for a third try!

Next month I should be able to get 4 more ROOTS in with no trouble, I'll be reading several short Christmas books. Here is this month:

39. The Shepard's Life by James Rebank
40. Still Life by Sarah Winman
41. Forever Young by Haley Mills
42. A Play of Knaves by Margaret Frazer
43. The Marseille Caper by Peter Mayle
44. Lord of Misrule by Jaimy Gordon DNF
45. Glitter and Glue by Kelly Corrigan
46. A Deadly Dealer by Ellery Adams

Somehow, even though I'm glad to be starting a new year soon I can't believe this one is over! December already?

47. Winter in Thrush Green by Miss Read
48. The Vanished Collection by Pauline Baer Perignon

And with this last entry I have reached my goal! I wasn't sure I would this year even by reading short books this month. I haven't read as much in 2021 or in 2020 as I have before but hope next year will be back to a larger number. I don't think I'll read another ROOT this month but if I do I'll post it.
