Advise me: Does anyone hear do bargello needlepoint?

So, I've pretty much given up knitting during These Unprecedented Times. I am not proficient enough to be able to tackle more complex projects without having someone on hand to bail me out when I get stuck, and I am bored with doing plain garter/stockinette/seed stitch things.

So I've been eyeing needlepoint as an alternative. I've done counted cross stitch in the past and enjoyed it, but I'll be honest — most of the kits I saw at online shops are ... not to my taste. A little too "Grandma's sofa" and "Thomas Kinkade painting" for me, though no shade to anyone who loves that sort of thing. I'm just not much for super flowery, foo-foo designs.

But I stumbled on a site featuring bargello needlepoint and I think I may have found my niche. The stitching seems fairly simple, though you can get more complex, and the patterns are generally geometric which appeals to me very much.

Before I take the plunge and buy a bunch of stuff, though, I'd love to get some feedback from anyone who's done it. Did you enjoy it? Are there hidden pitfalls to watch for? Any tips you can pass along?

Thanks in advance for being the hive mind to help me out!

Oooh, I can't help you because I've never done it, but I'm following along because I'd love to know more!

On the not-great cross stitch patterns topic, though: Have you seen this site? I love some of their stuff, including these fractal patterns: https://www.xs-collectibles.com/Patterns/Subjects/Fractals

I have a couple of their dvds, including one of fractals and could possibly send you some patterns, if you'd like.

>2 scaifea: - Those are really interesting patterns.

>1 rosalita: - I have done some bargello in the past, but it was a long time ago. I think sometimes when you do needlepoint or even bargello the canvas can get skewed or stretched in one direction. But I also think there are different way to make the stitch that can lessen that. But it's been a long time. And I'm not sure that's what happens with bargello.

Oof — I just saw that glaring typo in the thread title! Of course I meant "Does anyone here" not "hear".

I should have my keyboard taken away as a dangerous object!

Meant to respond to this: probably the biggest technical problem is consistent tension if you have differing stitch lengths. Then there is the "pay attention" problem!

>6 SassyLassy: Thanks for the tips. Consistent tension is my eternal bugaboo in knitting, so I'm "delighted" to find that I will have to continue worrying about it with needlepoint! :-)
