Where are you in Fantasyland? August, 2020

I'm currently in the Shire, about to head to Rivendell for The Fellowship of the Ring.

Just arrived in New York with Wild Seed, which so far feels more fantasy than sci-fi. It's my favorite by Butler so far!

Also in Al-Rassan with The Lions of Al-Rassan for my book club.

Had a very quick visit to medieval Russia, because I adored it so much that I flew through The Girl in the Tower... The Series is shaping up to have a place in my list of major favorites.

Now taking a slight detour into sci-fi with Network Effect.

>5 Niko: I agree about Girl In The Tower. I finished the Winternight Trilogy at record speed because I couldn't put it down. I thought the third book was an excellent wrap up to the character development and hope you enjoy it too!

Added Redemption's Blade by Adrian Tchaikovsky to my reading rotation.

>8 Sakerfalcon: I hope you find it as satisfying of an ending as I did :)

I am about halfway through The Crippled God, which is the final installment of Malazan: Book of the Fallen. It's better than Dust of Dreams, but I'm finding myself telling the author to just get on with it! The set-pieces are excellent as always, and I have always loved the Malazan army vignettes, but the in-between stuff is bogging me down. I feel bad, because the series as a whole is very well-constructed, and Erikson's prose is amazing. Just cut down on the speeches! Also, the number of plot threads and sub-plots has grown exponentially. It probably makes for a great climax when they all come together, but my head is swimming.

Finished Seven Blades in Black by Sam Sykes. Sometimes really good. Sometimes a bit draggy. Overall, a good read.

>10 drmamm:, just noting, you should not anticipate every thread to get a tidy wrap-up. Erikson has described the series as an excerpt from his world's history that has no real beginning or end. Still worked for me though.

Finished Winter of the witch and found it a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. I love how the author managed to balance fantasy and history in the outcome.

Now I've started Harrow the Ninth.

>13 Sakerfalcon: I'm glad you enjoyed Winter of the Witch also! I didn't appreciate the blending of real history during the story as I just didn't recognize it due to lack of familiarity with the history, but that was something I found really cool when I read the author's notes at the end and she explained what parts were real.

The Green Man's Foe by Juliet McKenna is a solid sequel to the first book. I've heard that there will be a third one forthcoming soon, and look forward to it.

Finally starting City of Brass by SA Chakraborty, which so far seems to be something like the Winternight books only with Arabian mythology....

Visiting "The Forsaken Lands" in The Fall of the Dagger.

I also started listening to A Darker Shade of Magic on audiobook during a long drive back from vacation... but now I have a dilemma of wondering when I'll get around to finishing it. Covid quarantine has led to me working from home PERMANENTLY, so my drive-time is going to be minimal for the foreseeable future. I don't tend to listen to podcasts or anything except when I'm in the car, so it's a bit of a puzzle.

>16 Niko: A Darker Shade of Magic is on my list to get to! Do you go on walks at all? I listen to my audiobooks during daily dog walks, or while doing chores/cleaning the house, but it took me a little practice to be able to pay attention well enough during those tasks.

Finished Redemption's Blade by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Liked it.
