A Farewell to Beyond Q Books/Bar/Barrista

Sad news posted on the Book of Face yesterday.

Beyond Q - a truly awesome Secondhand Bookstore, Cafe, Bar and Live Music venue in Weston Creek (Canberra Australian Capital Territory)will be closing its doors as of this coming Friday (5th June 2020).

At the moment they are selling their books - take a bag and make an offer.

My heart can be heard to break from Gordon all the way to Weston but my daughter and I made a foray this morning and hopefully will go back again.

Meantime - please, all Canberra Region based Library Thingers - make the trek, buy some books and wish them all the best

Cheers

Did you get some good stuff?

Why are they closing?

I got a good haul, some excellent histories and another copy of Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart (possibly one of the best books ever written).

I didn't ask and don't wish to speculate.

Years ago when we lived in Australia, we drove down to Canberra (mid 2012) and I hunted down a fantasy (and other genres) bookshop. I thought it was called 'Gaslight' but LT tells me it was in Wollongong and, sadly, also closed its doors but back in 2014. Which is a bummer because I was planning a return trip.

I'm wondering if I've got the right name. Are there still bookshops in ACT which specialise in fantasy?

Hi Humouress,

Gaslight was in Canberra - on Wollongong St in Fyshwick only about a block down from Canty's.

It seems that with the passing of Gaslight some years ago, there is no longer a specialist Fantasy bookshop in the ACT. I loved Gaslight and was sad to see it close but it came down to Gayle being ready to retire. I used to see her around the town for a few years on after that but its been a while.

Gaslight was unique in specialising in Crime, Fantasy and Science Fiction (they would also pull in the occasional historical novel as well) and selling both new and secondhand.

Canty's continues to hold a very impressive range of secondhand books on all subjects and is well worth a look next time you are in Oz and can get to Canberra.

Cheers

>5 Macbeth: Thanks. I had a look at the map and Fysgwick rang a bell. That’s sad (for me, that is; I hope Gayle is enjoying her retirement). They had some titles that I was interested in (yes, I know it’s been a long time).

Thank you for the information on Canty’s - though it’ll be a while until we can get back to Oz, never mind Canberra.
