Forgive me if this is indeed a frequently asked question that's made its way here before, but is there a way to see the books to which I've given a particular star rating--e.g., to call up a list of the books I've given 4 stars and another for the stinkers I gave 2? or simply a list of of all books I've rated showing the ratings I've given them? I've not found a link on my stats page nor a setting in display styles that would show this nor in any other place that occurred to me. Cheers.

You can add personal star ratings to one of your display options in Your Books. This would then add a column and be sorted by that column.

Ah, thanks--it took a while for me to spot the options but now I get. Cheers again.

This of course works best for 0.5 (or 1) and 5 * ratings where they appear at the top of the sort order. There's no easy way to get to the 2.5 rated ones without a lot of scrolling depending on the size of your library and rating frequency. I know of no automatic way to get there.

You could kludge it by power editing an appropriate tag, but that involves all the scrolling at least once, and then remembering to tag correctly thereafter.

reading_fox (#4):

No scrolling, just binary-searching. LT's old-school and has pagination, rather than infinite scroll, which in this situation actually works well.

Edited to add: For the non-technically-minded, binary search is, among other things, a cute parlor trick that lets you guess the word someone's thinking of in a dictionary in 20 yes-no questions. Sort your library by ratings. Go to the halfway page. See whether it's higher or lower than your target rating, and then go to the corresponding quarter point (So if the halfway point is page 30 of your catalog, the ratings there are 4.0, and you're looking for 2.5, go to 15. If you're looking for 4.5 in the same situation, go to 45). You'll find what you're looking for much faster on average than if you just page down again an again.

(The dictionary trick is similar. Open to the middle of the dictionary, and ask if the word they're thinking of is before or after whatever word's on the top of the right-hand page. Flip to the middle of the corresponding section, and repeat as needed.)

I moved rating to front in catalogue style, I sorted by rating, I eventually got that straight to find what looked like thumbnails rather than stars showing 5-star books at top of list & then 5 stars in a tipsy line for the rest of the page & for all I know the rest of my catalogue. I remembered lorax's post and ask 'Is it bigger than a breadbox?' & then remembered that s/he plays 20 Questions with a dictionary so asked 'Is it a noun?' but still no joy. I give up; too much messing about for me. I haven't given very many ratings--just that for future reference & consistency I'd hoped to see which books I'd given which number of stars to. Thanks to ye for being helpful.

Good lord those damned thumbnails or whatever they're properly called are still showing. Would someone please tell me how to change them back to star icons? Thanks again.

Sorry I couldn't explain it better. That's the best I know how to do, I'm afraid.

(My pronouns are she/her, FWIW. I should add that to my profile, I thought they were already there.)

You explained it well. Was joshing re 20 questions whilst wondering why our 4th question playing it when young was invariably the breadbox one--animal? mineral? vegatable? always came first. (s/he is just a handy usage esp. on internet.) And if you can tell me how to restore my stars I'll send you the can of worms I inadvertently opened when looking for ratings. Who would turn down free fishing bait, after all?

No idea how to restore your ratings data, sorry - it looks like there's still data on about 70 of your books. Data loss is taken seriously, though, so if you post to Bug Collectors about it, especially if you have an example of a book that you know you had rated but which is now showing as unrated, they'll probably take a look. Even better if you have more than one example, or an export file - they'll likely dismiss a single missing rating as "you must have accidentally unrated that one and forgotten about it."

I think by "missing stars" they mean that they aren't getting the icons to load.

Cheers again. The dog-eared A4 images reverted to stars overnight thank heaven. Will bear in mind advice re reporting data loss though--a fair few of my book covers seem to have gone blank & shall report if I can find firm evidence that that's the case.

If those are covers that you uploaded then that would indeed be data loss. If they were Amazon covers then Amazon probably removed them and there's nothing LT can do about that.

>13 jjwilson61: I looked further into it & found that one book out of a batch I got last autumn from publisher's sale is missing a cover. I certainly would have gone straight to publisher's site & picked up all covers from it straightaway. Will look further, though. I certainly perceive more gaps in covers when I go to a catalogue page and some of them for books like that one, ones for which I would easily have found covers.

Perhaps you or someone else could verify something: A knowledgeable member said that if a book is not loaded via amazon (I enter miine manually, anyway) that a member-uploaded image from it would remain even if the book disappears from amazon; since then I've often uploaded covers from selling sites. Is that true, though? Wouldn't account for all my missing coverrs but it would be nice to get confirmation. Thanks.

I don't think how you entered the book matters at all. What matters is what sort of cover you use.

Member covers stay in the system as long as somebody is using them. Amazon covers are not in the LT system, but pulled in from Amazon, and therefore can change or disappear.

Thanks. Just to be certain I've got it: I do not load a book through amazon but cover image address I copy is for amazon; this shows as a member cover & so will stay here even if book vanishes from amazon? Cheers.

Yes. Then it's a cover that's actually on LT itself.

18lorax
maaliskuu 30, 2020, 9:19 am

It seems like you're having some problem with images loading from LT, given that you report the actual images of the stars (rather than the ratings) were missing - I'm sorry I didn't understand that, since I didn't ever have a problem with missing images of stars. It's possible that rather than your cover data actually having gone missing, you're having a similar display problem that you had earlier with the stars. Can you give an example of a book where you uploaded the cover yourself, and didn't subsequently change which one you were using (unused member-uploaded covers are deleted) but now aren't seeing it? It would help both with debugging, if the image is gone, and with testing whether other members can see it (as was the case with the star images.)

>17 Nicole_VanK: Thanks--that's reassuring.

>18 lorax: And thank you--that's a good idea. It's mostly a matter of noticing what seems an unusual no. of coverless books when I go to a catalogue page but I have noticed a few specific blank books I'm sure I would have given a cover to. I'll look for some of those & come back w. a few links once I have.
