I have no reading project at the moment, but I believe it is always worth keeping track of baswoods split reading personal. Woe would he be had there been an explosion of Elizebethan Sci-Fi!
So this thread it to catch anything that doesn't fit any others, but to keep the group moving along.

I am reading Force of Circumstances the third part of Simone De Beauvoir's autobiography. It is a bit of a tome at over 650 pages of small print, but makes for fascinating reading. It covers the years just after the end of the second world war and into the 1950's. The life of an intellectual on the left in France after the war seems to be similar in some ways to today. The left (socialists) and the further left(communists) are in retreat as they watch with horror the rise of the capitalist states in Europe. Intellectuals in France both feared invasion from the Stalin's Russia or from America in the west tooled up with it's atom bombs. Meanwhile De Beauvoir and Jean-paul Sartre try and negotiate a way through the morass of disappointments.

I haven't looked much into her work. I read The Mandarins because it covered her relationship with Nelson Algren, on the surface one of the strangest literary couplings I've ever known of.

I have been there in my Joyce-reading days.
From where I live, Paris is only a three hour trip.
Poor deal compared to other attractions in the city of lights ( Louvre, Orsay and so on )
