Member/author just created a group sending people to his own website:

http://www.librarything.com/groups/peoplewholoveanimalf

17mart1n
marraskuu 13, 2019, 12:01 pm

I've just been down a rabbit hole which started with the (5 star) reviews of this authors most popular book.

To cut to the chase, I've found reviewers whose reviews are mostly/almost exclusively 5 star reviews of (I think) self-published books with very few copies:
https://www.librarything.com/profile_reviews.php?view=OanaMatei
https://www.librarything.com/profile_reviews.php?view=claudiaeugenie.laube
https://www.librarything.com/profile_reviews.php?view=AllyMcMahon
There's at least some overlap. I suspect more are out there.

Am I being overly suspicious? Might someone have sold 5 star reviews to authors? What should be done about this if anything?

I've just noticed that the reviews are all a few years old fwiw.

http://www.capitalmohawkprism.org/

NYS Dec also has an invasive species kit:
https://www.librarything.com/work/23922702

This is probably the same kit as the two groups work together.

I think that the CapMo page is behaving strangely, but that is not a reason to mark it spam.

Edited to add: I just looked at the page again and there was a catechism attached to it that was not there earlier in the afternoon. And there are over 800 libraries but the editions shows only 2.

And edited again: There is now another work attached to this record: Walsh's Tasmanian Almanac 1869. What is happening?

Keeping an eye on these, no obvious spam but a bit suspicious.
Two new members started groups with identical names: "Favorite Books from 90's". A number of spam groups lately have used the Favorite books/movies, etc. from the 70s / 80s / 90s format.
These two apparently share the same blogspot—https://ravikiranmuvvala.blogspot.com.

The first looks more like a site comparing programs and apps for various tasks than either a sales site or 'technical literature on programming' - there's nothing about programming there, just about existing apps/programs.

The second - a squash fansite? Stranger things have existed, I suppose.

Hmm. Several links, and all the text talks about their great system (which is a registered trademark) for memorizing the Koran. YouTube is free to view, but the ads create revenue. I found no related web sites, just the YouTube and Vimeo channels. It seems very dubious.

'Buy what I'm Selling links' on profiles are generally allowed.

Schools are allowed to have links to the school website. Businesses are allowed to have the business website.
Churches are allowed to have church related websites.

As long as they are just 'selling' the Koran, I don't see a problem.

Profiles with no books aren't going to get many views, anyway.
