About Me

Hi, I'm Robin, and this is my 7th or 8th year with the 75'ers Group. I'm 55, and I've been married to Ed (56) for 28 years. We have two sons, Beckham (17) and Keegan (14), and four cats, Picasso (14) and the kittens, Mycroft, Bandit, and J'Zargo (2.) Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus (the capital of Ohio) has been our home for the past 20+ years. Our boys are involved in travel soccer and many school activities, and they keep us very busy driving them around. Beckham now has his driver’s license, so he can help with those duties!

I retired last year from a tax practice which I have run out of my house for the past ten years - prior to that, I was the Tax Director for one of the top 100 accounting firms in the US for five years, a shareholder in a small accounting firm for five years, and worked at Ernst & Young, an international accounting firm for 12 years where I headed the local tax compliance department. I have been slowing down my tax practice for the past few years to spend time with my boys before they go off to college. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my days and I’m sort of at loose ends until I figure things out. I struggle with both depression and diabetes.

Ed is in IT at Huntington Bank, a national bank headquartered in Columbus. He recently celebrated his 25th anniversary with the bank! Beckham is in 12th grade and is accelerated in math - he finished his high school math credits while he was still in middle school. He is taking classes for his senior year of high school at The Ohio State University. No plans as yet as to where he will attend university. Keegan is in 9th grade at the same high school as Beckham (he's a little disappointed that Beckham isn't actually there) and is accelerated two years in math. He has been struggling with hearing issues since he was about four months old and has been wearing hearing aids in both ears since 2016. He has been diagnosed with dyslexia, but he also does very well in school.

I learned to read at a very young age and have rarely been without a book (or many) since then. My library on LT reflects those books that I have kept track of since I started as a member eight years ago. I am slowly trying to capture books I have read before that time, but I'm guessing that a lot of books that I have read will never be recorded as I have forgotten them. I am totally an addict, and the daily deals on Amazon for $1.99 will probably be my financial ruin. I just cannot help myself when it comes to a bargain of that sort!

I mainly read mysteries, science fiction, fantasy and children's/young adult books (along with my sons.) Specifically, most of the mysteries that I read are British mysteries in the style of the Golden Age of Detection, and I enjoy soft sci-fi, especially dystopian, a bit more than hard sci-fi. Until 2017, Beckham, Keegan and I read together every night, but it has been difficult with Beckham's course load to do this. I hope to start reading together again this year, but realistically it will be weekly, not nightly. In school, I never had to read many of the classics, so I am slowly going back to read some of those. I also try to read several best sellers each year. Additionally, I have been working my way through the Newbery, Hugo, and Nebula awards.

I proudly consider myself to be a geek (okay, maybe a nerd too). My favorite TV shows are Sherlock (BBC version) and Doctor Who (both classic and new series). We enjoy Marvel movies - The Avengers, Captain America, Doctor Strange, etc. - and also the Marvel TV series - Agents of Shield, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, etc. My other hobbies include making beaded jewelry and sometimes knitting. I love to travel, but since we have children who are quickly approaching college age, we don't do as much as we used to.

If we would win the lottery, the first thing I would do (aside from paying off the mortgage and setting aside the funds for college for my sons) is to go back to school myself! I love to learn and would probably take lots of psychology, philosophy and literature courses.

I'm so glad to be back with the 75'ers again this year and am going to attempt to visit more than I have in the past. So far this hasn't happened - RL seems to interfere with my plans.

(Shhh…this is recycled from last year because I’m too lazy to think up other things to say about myself. Don’t tell.)

Challenges

I plan only to loosely follow the challenges - if I read a book and it fits, I'll count it, but I am not going to plan my reading to complete a challenge. If I need a book to read, I'll consider something that fits the challenge. And YES, there are A LOT of challenges here, but the majority of them fit very nicely with the books I plan to read, and we'll just see where I get on the others. Fun for me, and gives me a little sense of accomplishment for basically doing nothing but what I would normally do. I've offloaded the details to my wiki pages - you can follow the links below or just see the summary here.

A Book A Year

I loved this idea - so I am copying Paul, Roni, Karen, and possibly others. These books may not necessarily be my favorite book published that year but are books that I have rated highly, enjoyed, and likely reread, and have some meaning to me. I've tried not to add too many books by one author and have attempted to keep it representative of my overall library.

You can find my list at my wiki pages:

>22 BLBera: Hi, Beth. It doesn't really take that long at all. At the beginning of the year, I just searched for challenges that matched the type of books that I typically read. I keep track of them in an Airtable database which I update after I finish a book. I really don't plan for the challenges, I just see what challenges match the books I read. So aside from the initial finding of the challenges and setting up the database, which probably took a couple of hours, the biggest time consumer is updating LT. But, I have my database set up where I can just copy and paste the info so it's really quick and easy and takes very little time. My programming skills are finally coming in handy for something!

I can't believe it's been over 2 months since I've been on LT. RL has certainly gotten in the way this year. Updating has definitely suffered, I've struggled to keep track of reading and my reading is also down. I won't be meeting many of the goals I'd set for myself at the beginning of the year. Oh, well...

>32 Carmenere: Hi, Lynda. Thanks!

>33 karenmarie: Thanks, Karen.

>34 ronincats: Thanks, Roni. I don't know about organized - more like too lazy to do anything other than copy what I've already done!!

>35 Berly: Thanks, Kim. My house (and life) are definitely NOT organized. But reading is the only thing that keeps me sane, so perhaps I do focus on it a little more than other things.

>36 BLBera: Beth, I'll admit that I have gone a little overboard on my "programming" the airtable databases - probably to an unnecessary extent, but I get a little thrill of accomplishment when I can manipulate a formula in the DB to make it do something that simplifies my life a little. If only the rest of life were as easy as figuring out a formula to make something work better!

Kim and Beth, if you could only see my house right now... "looking around at dishes in sink and piles of laundry in baskets on counter..." 🤣

Hi Robin! Nice to see you here. I hope things get as organized as you need them to be. I used to get so stressed when things weren't totally under control, but now, not so much. I learned to pick my battles with our daughter when she was little, and now I pick my own self-inflicted battles better.

>38 karenmarie: Oops, Karen, somehow I missed you. Yes, I've certainly learned to pick my battles too - and am not nearly as organized as I'd like to be, but I guess that's life! I don't stress about it for the most part. Unfortunately, I'm sure that the boys may not ask their friends over as much as they would like because of the messiness, but they don't want to pitch in to help, so...that's how it goes! 😂

Robin - It doesn't seem like your reading is suffering! 161 books is quite remarkable. I have found I can be organized with school or at home, but not usually both. Oh well.

WoW!! You have certainly been building up your library this year. 656!! I was recently trying to catch up on ebook and audio entries. My stats are now better but not perfect...yet.

>48 BLBera: Thanks, Beth. Yes, I can be very organized when I need to be, and I used to be a lot more organized with everything...but, LIFE! My reading has definitely slowed, I'm sad to say, the last two months, I've only read an average of 2,400 pages (about 80 pages a day), when the past couple of years and earlier this year I was reading around 3,700 - 4,000 pages a month (125-135 pages a day). Oh, well...

>49 FAMeulstee: Thanks, Anita. I'm sure you've probably read at least twice as much as I have, as usual! 😀

>50 quondame: Susan, thanks! I hope you had a very happy and delicious Thanksgiving as well.

>51 Berly: Kim, yes, I have been building up my library. I decided earlier this year that I would complete the series for a few authors that I had been reading whose books were getting harder to find - Anthony Berkeley and Ann Granger to name a few. Then I figured I would complete my Gladys Mitchell, Patricia Wentworth, and Margery Allingham collections. A few years ago, I started collected mystery reference books and I just decided this year to buy as many as I could find. I think I added over 15 of those to my library. I got so frustrated when I would try to look at a series list to find the next book for some of the Golden Age mysteries, only to find that every site seemed to have a different order, or even a different list of what was included in the series. Unfortunately, the books sometimes also disagree, but I've found a couple that are pretty good. I told my husband that if I could ever find the time, it would be a dream of mine to try to put together a list (or even a website along the lines of Worlds Without End, except featuring mysteries instead of sci-fi and fantasy.)

So here's a small update about our family. My younger son, Keegan, has had several sets of ear tubes starting around age six months, a couple of reconstructive surgeries for holes in his eardrums, and has worn hearing aids for about four years. The day after Christmas, he had surgery to potentially correct the hearing in his left (his worst hearing) ear. The doctor determined that two of the bones in his ear were not vibrating correctly, but the third was. So he bypassed the two bones that weren't working by inserting a titanium prosthesis and connecting it to the working bone. It will take about four weeks until we know whether his hearing will have improved. There is a chance that it will not. It's a little scary to me that he now has a small metal piece in his head, as he now has to carry a card around at all times with this information. Apparently, though, titanium is compatible with MRI's if proper procedures are used. We don't know if we will be able to correct the hearing in his right ear or not.

My older son, Beckham, is deep into college applications right now. He is taking his senior year of HS classes at Ohio State University and is enjoying it. He has applied to Ohio State, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, and Case Western Reserve. He will also apply to Duke, Carnegie Mellon, University of Pennsylvania, and Johns Hopkins. He has been accepted to Ohio State, and we are waiting to hear from the rest.

I was scheduled to have cataract surgery earlier this month, however, my eye doctor decided that he was just going to give me a basic lense and not the multi-focal lense that he also offers to other patients. He was not available to discuss this with me before my measurement appointment and did not want to give me other options, so I am now in the process of looking for a new eye doctor!

Fortunately, Ed is our rock and there is no drama associated with him! Unless you count the fact that he is very busily trying to organize our basement so that we can handle the delivery of the pool table from his parent's house in a couple of days. I would help, but every time I go into the basement for an extended period of time, my allergies flare up so badly that I'm out of commission for quite a while. So everyone is looking forward to the pool table, even though Beckham only has a few months to take advantage, and I may not be able to spend any time with it!

>70 rretzler: Old dust allergies are a real pain. Best wishes for your younger son's improved hearing and your older son's college ambitions. Also for you finding the right eye doctor. My dad and sister got graduate degrees from MIT, so I'll quietly root for that!

>71 quondame: Thanks, Susan! I think that's where Beckham would like to go. He definitely has the test scores and the grades to get in anywhere he would like to go, the problem is that he's such an introvert, he doesn't have much leadership experience. He's only now realizing that he should have done many of the things that I encouraged him to do all along - he was naive enough to think that his grades and test scores would get him in anywhere. It's interesting now to hear him give advice to Keegan about what he should do in HS - exactly what I encouraged Beckham to do. I hope he doesn't have any regrets about not doing those things.

Frankly, I'd like to see him at OSU - because it's here in town and is my alma mater. It certainly won't be the challenge that some of the other schools might be, but it will still be a good education for him. But that's just my selfish thoughts - of course, we'll be happy for him no matter where he goes!

>72 rretzler: My daughter decided to go to college in a different climate and went to Bradley in Peoria IL. For a couple of years my husband had jobs 50 miles away in Bloomington/Normal, so that kind of worked out. 2020 is the year she plans to buy a car and get her own apartment in Los Angeles, which is a challenge all its own. I think she and a couple of other young women are planning on living together, but plans for 25-30 year olds are more air than stone. I'll miss her, but won't mind not having to co-ordinate to use the car.
