Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors:
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post:
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page:
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

I left a comment for Lorannen about the multiple work author from >7 Taphophile13:, and happened to notice this.

It's borderline, and yet I hate to flag it. Yes, it qualifies as an enthusiastic author, but it seems rather cruel to flag the topic. Then again...

No, I didn't leave a comment on the profile, but someone probably should.

marraskuu 23, 2018, 3:45 pm

>10 Lyndatrue: I wouldn't count that post by artelwhyte as an enthusiastic author. He's not pushing his book at all in the post, he just mentions he's an author and talks about other authors' work.

marraskuu 23, 2018, 4:04 pm

>11 norabelle414: I based it off the blog entry, and from long experience. As I'd said, I didn't feel the need to flag the topic, but do think someone ought to point out the way of things ahead of time. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure, etc, etc, etc...

marraskuu 23, 2018, 4:15 pm

>11 norabelle414: I don't think "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" applies to treating someone who hasn't spammed like a spammer because they might spam in the future.

marraskuu 23, 2018, 9:24 pm

>10 Lyndatrue: Disagree. Not spam. Just being confused on where he's posting. Leaving him alone when/until he does something wrong.

marraskuu 23, 2018, 11:58 pm

Well, I should have been more clear. I didn't think it was spam, and with very rare exception, I don't think our group that we class as enthusiastic authors are spamming, not deliberately, and not accidentally. I was looking for someone to phrase the "Welcome to LT" message in such a was as to make it reasonably clear that blogging was something that authors often do, but that LT was not the place to do it (although putting a link *to* the blog, or otherwise pointing to it from the profile of said author, is expected, and perfectly fine).

I was going to just let it go, but it makes me feel bad that folks thought I meant that the poster was a spammer, rather than someone who just needed direction.

Hope that's clearer.

Author spam:

Group is join to post, so you need to join before you can flag the posts.

marraskuu 25, 2018, 12:34 pm

>16 MarthaJeanne: Group is now empty of posts (I was the fourth flag on both). I note that he's on two other groups, but a cursory glance suggested that he hadn't (yet, anyway) made a post. Sad business, really. I have deep pity for authors today. They all seem to drown in the background of self-publishing, which gives encouragement to all, equally.

I imagine his group will vanish on Monday (there's already 8 or 9 flags).

marraskuu 25, 2018, 1:17 pm

marraskuu 27, 2018, 11:45 am

>24 lilithcat: When they left the first message, I wasn't sure, but now they've left the same message in multiple places, with no other use of LT. I did mention in my message on their profile that I was only guessing that they were the author.

marraskuu 27, 2018, 12:25 pm

>25 2wonderY:

When I saw her post yesterday, I did a bit of googling, and could find nothing to suggest she's the author.

Her first post linked to Smashwords, which is why I flagged it. Her second post eliminated that (I'm guessing due to the response she got to the first one).

Not only does post 88 need two more flags (just because), this post also needs another flag to disappear.

Please also flag this post from our strange little vandal.

I have the feeling that it's a member of the site that's made this account just to cause difficulties. The account name's a tip off, but there's "(Member either removed themselves or was removed by staff.)" that suggests that the vandalism is deliberate. Posting on Spam fighters seems meaningful.

joulukuu 12, 2018, 12:56 pm

>89 Lyndatrue: I was thinking they were underage and staff caught it relatively quickly, as a user name like that seems indicative of an underage person to me... (Plus it allows for a little benefit of the doubt.)

>90 gilroy: I'd have thought that myself, until they posted here, on spam fighters. Usually, when staff removes someone, it's a profile that is locked, not just closed (as this one was). I dunno. The fellow posting over in the french language group was even stranger.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 14, 2019, 2:44 am

It seems as though the spam collecting engine is slowing down. The topic above is now gone, but the profile is still around, not suspended. This seems to be happening within the spam folder as well.

Off to slumberland for me; hopefully it's just a weekend aberration, and will all be back to normal on Monday.

Enthusiastic Author seeking reviews in the wrong place.
Profile has a comment.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 15, 2019, 12:57 am

This one's a little early, but perhaps they started earlier because it's Monday.

I'd guess it's partly because the folks who used to do spam fighting are (at least some of them) off putting out other fires. It just seems odd that they don't end up in the bit bucket right off the bat. I'm beginning to wonder if the code that used to be so efficient has been modified, perhaps indirectly, and now is less capable.

These were mostly posted for myself. The topic's gone, and the profile's suspended. It does beg the question, though.

The thing is, it seems to be mostly the same thing (supplements). It almost seems like the same web site, although I couldn't say for sure (since the evidence is now gone). I dunno.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 15, 2019, 1:17 pm

On the premise that it's worthwhile to note, here's the profile of yet another "Enthusiastic Author" (there's already been a helpful comment placed on the profile, and the topic wherein said author is requesting reviews is already gone).

I admit that I do not understand someone who is an author, who cannot be bothered to put even his own book in his library.

Please don't flag the profile. The profile is here only in case there's another post, since he now knows better. I hope.

tammikuu 21, 2019, 9:29 pm

Currently suspended account (and here's the profile).

I'm not sad, at all, either. That really stretched the definition of "enthusiastic author" (making the group to post reviews after being told to quit posting them in Early Reviewers seemed a bit rude, at the least).

Sometimes authors are just enthusiastic, and seem to quickly learn the ropes. Some of them even stick around, and become participating members. I've seen a couple do just that (and not about to point them out for extra attention by naming them). Usually, at least, they quickly catch on, and don't keep misbehaving. Every once in a while, we get an insistent one, and "Neetha" is welcome to join the ranks of the deservedly suspended.

tammikuu 26, 2019, 12:48 am

I can't figure this one out. Kind of looks like spam, and kind of doesn't.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 26, 2019, 12:51 am

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 26, 2019, 2:06 pm

>150 karenb: Doesn't really read like that. I can't see any words there about how to find the book, or asking about an author. I'm waiting it out, and mostly put that there as a reminder to me (and others) if something else happens.

ETA even more: I just put a note on the author's page. That account must have been made very early in the morning, since the timestamp says today. I see your original post (>182 lilithcat:) is from last night. Wonder where the account owner lives? Must be somewhere in Europe or even further east.

Looks like this profile exists to promote (with reviews) books that are on offer, namely, the Lang fairy books; but I'm not sure I'm correctly interpreting what I see.

Muokkaaja: helmikuu 19, 2019, 1:45 am

>186 Meredy: Although the profile has not (at least not yet) made any posts, each and every "review" of those books by the profile leads directly to a site. I'd bet that you could even buy those very books from the site. I'm not flagging, because I tend to err on the side of believing they're spam, but if others come along, and concur, then (at a minimum) the reviews should be flagged, and perhaps send a link to Loranne for further handling. I don't think general flagging will work on this one, because of the number of books.

I loved the Andrew Lang Fairy Books as a child (and still do).

ETA: I dunno. When I look at that website, I'm not sure that this is malfeasance. I guess I'll find out how it all turned out tomorrow morning. Nighty-night.
