What's everyone reading this month? I've started The Royal Runaway by Lindsay Emory, but I may not have time to finish it before it's due back at the library!

I started A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing earlier this morning and it's "stream of consciousness" style is hurting my brain! I am also going to start something lighter later on today, perhaps Crazy, Rich Asians.

I'll be finishing Hamlet, Revenge!, by Michael Innes, and about time too.

Today I started The Poison Squad: One Chemist's Single-Minded Crusade for Food Safety at the Turn of the Twentieth Century, by Deborah Blum. And yes, I was reading it over lunch :D

I'm finishing up my Random book from last month The Moor by Laurie R. King. After that I might start Crow Lake by Mary Lawson which I took as a BB and suggested for one of my RL book clubs for this month.

I'm sorry to say I cannot read any more of Barbara Kingsolver's Unsheltered , and I am returning it to the library unfinished, which is a rarity for me. I found it to be just a tad too preachy and it was turning into a snoozefest for me. Life is short and there are way too many books to read. She is an amazing author but this one wasn't for me.

Finished The Poison Squad yesterday and will be moving on to A Brief History of Time Lords, by Steve Tribe.

Well, I had to return Lindsay Emory's The Royal Runaway to the library, so I'll have to finish it (or, more likely, start over) another time. On deck for this month are The Spy Wore Red by Aline, Countess of Romanones, and a reread of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I'm trying to limit my extracurricular reading this month because I am attempting NaNoWriMo (and already super behind)!

I finished Dead as a Doornail, part of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries, on Saturday and then read the first interlude in The Forsyte Saga, Indian Summer of a Forsyte, which I understand is an interesting segway into the next big part of the saga, In Chancery which I plan to start next.

I finished another Irish book, this one remembering WWI just in time for the 100th anniversary of the armistice.

How Many Miles to Babylon by Jennifer Johnston earned five stars and will be on the list of favourite books of the year. Highly recommended.

On the bus I'm tearing through The Division Bell Mystery, by Ellen Wilkinson.

At home I just finished Christmas with Anne and Other Holiday Stories, by L.M. Montgomery, and am preparing to start another collection of short stories: Florida, by Lauren Groff.

I've started Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Never read it before. The introduction said that as it discussed plot points, if you'd not read it before you should read the book first, then return to the introduction, so that's what I'm doing.

marraskuu 7, 2018, 3:26 pm

>15 Helenliz: It's so nice that the introduction gave you fair warning! I've noticed that, in a lot of classics, the introductions will give away the entire plot, and I hate it.

I finally finished my Random book from Oct The Moor by Laurie R. King which I wasn't too thrilled with and am going to start Bloodroot by Susan Wittig Albert which I'll be reading for the color cat and the mystery cat.

Woo hoo, I FINALLY finished reading Anna Karenina on Serial Reader! According to my Goodreads, I started reading it on May 31.

Next up in Serial Reader: The Wealth of Nations, by Adam Smith. The random number generator I use to pick my Serial Reader books was favouring the long reads ;)

In library reading, I've just finished the very silly Hope Never Dies, an Obama/Biden mystery by Andrew Shaffer, and am preparing to start another British Library Crime Classic: Fire in the Thatch, by E.C.R. Lorac.

Finished Fire in the Thatch. Better than the other Lorac I read, but still a bit strange (the murder happened totally offscreen).

Preparing to start Let's Go Exploring: Calvin and Hobbes, by Michael Hingston, a small book in the ECW Press "Pop Classics" series.

Finished MacGregor's Gathering, a surprisingly funny historical novel by Nigel Tranter (the first in the Rob Roy trilogy).

Next up in bus reading is Victor Spinetti's memoir, Up Front....

I'm reading The Mars Room and am having a hard time putting it down. It's more character driven than plot, and extremely well written.

I'm currently reading Crow Lake for my RL book club. I show that I took this as a BB from Judy last year, but someone (Kay, maybe? or Judy?) was reading the third one this year which brought it back to my attention.,

Finished Up Front..., by Victor Spinetti (from >28 rabbitprincess:) and Let's Go Exploring: Calvin and Hobbes, by Michael Hingston. Both were delightful in their own ways.

Next up in bus reading is a Pool book, Designs on Life, by Elizabeth Ferrars.

Next up in library reading will be True or Poo? (which I am also hoping will be delightful) and Blue Lightning, by Ann Cleeves.

Just finished an audio read of Craig Ferguson's memoir, American on Purpose. He reads the book himself and it is excellent.

Next up in audio will be a Doctor Who two-fer: Blackout & the Art of Death. I tend to alternate Doctor Who audios with non--Doctor Who ones ;)

Just finished After You by Jojo Moyes.

I didn't realize this was the second in a series or I would have started with the first one. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story of family relationships, recovery from bereavment, and the beginnings of a romance. Moyes' characters are quite believable.

I just noticed that there was a new book out by Susan Hill The Comforts of Home, which reminded me that I hadn't read The Soul of Discretion. It's been a while since I read the last book in this series,(maybe 2013?) but details are coming back to me.

I started listening to an audiobook: A murder of quality by John le Carré read by Frederick Davidson but there was annoying noise in the background as if there was a group of people having a meeting/party in the same room. That was a DNF for me. I read it not so long ago so it's no loss.

Instead, I started another audiobook Spy Story by Len Deighton read by Simon Vance. So far, this has turned out to be a good decision as Deighton adds so much humour to his story. I even had a laugh-out-loud moment within the first 30 minutes.

I've finished Crow Lake by Mary Lawson (for my RL book club) which I enjoyed a lot and am looking forward to reading other novels that she's written. Next, I'll be finishing my Oct mystery book The Spy Who Came In From the Cold by John LeCarre.
