Hello all
Im gathering ideas about the collection as performance of decadence. I’m thinking of the amassing of art and outre objects as a means of creating an artificial paradise or constructed sancutary away from the modern. Consider against nature, comte de montesquieu, or the compulsive consumerist tendency of Patrick Bateman (if we consider American psycho a retelling of against nature.
Any textual references from the 19th century I
May have overlooked would be greatly appreciated.

If you can read French you might want to check La maison d’un artiste by Edmond de Goncourt. I don't think it's been translated.

Contemporary, but continuing in a long established tradition: Viktor Wynd's Cabinet of Wonders. Or here: http://www.thelasttuesdaysociety.org/museum-curiosities/#.W9cyXxuouUm

Thank you Ben, Vitor's bar is my favourite absinthe spot in London. I lectured there last year on fin de siecle Satanism.
Kuiperdolin, I will check that out! Thank you!

Ah! I wish I'd have gone for that! This time last year?

Thanks Benwaugh, it would have been lovely to meet in person. It was about this time last year. I speak at Treadwells with some regularity as well. I’d love to get UK members of the group together for a salon.

I shall make it a point to get over (Assuming the tribal ban under penalty of hanging is no longer in effect after 400 years).
