Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:
-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.
-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.
Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

It would still be a kindness for someone to post a note on his profile, but as I said (and have proved), tonight I lack the skill.
Wading through them today is onerous because a couple of members are adding lots of images.
I had to gasp at the amount of PII this new member has added:
I'm tempted to caution her, but I'm guessing I might get a poor reaction.
That's just bizarre. Identity theft waiting to happen.
Does she realize this isn't LinkedIn?
If I were that evil.
I should have checked to see whether they'd been made after lorannen's warning, or before. Hope it was before; I'd hate to think of this continuing.
>48 Taphophile13: Just saw your comment; thank you. :-}
I sent RMM a message back when I said I would, but I have not heard anything. She has since added to her profile, I guess because it wasn't long enough. She added a whole section of links, none of which are obviously spam but which start out as links to her facebook page, etc. and devolve into, for example, thecheesecakefactory.com

That appears to be all of the critters this morning. Have a good day!
Does it appear that the Robert Stanek page needs split, or is this a single author.
BTW, >62 lorannen: He appears to have gone to the strategy of using private memberships to keep his 5 star ratings on all books. Can you put the kabosh on those accounts as well?
are you aware of your beauty? here, let us cut you up and make it better
Added a spam venue, which I'm deleting. Do I need to flag the venue picture for voting or will it just go away too?
In an unpleasant, and yet related matter, there's that horrid group back that attempted to use multiple accounts and group creation some time ago.
Here's the group (which already has three flags, but needs many more).
I should probably drag poor Lorannen in on this. As I recall, it took staff intervention last time out.
Only this "topic" from that group managed to find its way into Spam.
Personally I am in favor of allowing kids to be rowdy, as long as they're doing it in their own group and not trying to take over others. I can't see any of the deleted messages, but I can see several flagged messages that are not inappropriate. Either way, it definitely does not count as spam.
The previous group that was removed by Loranne was using attacking language and racial slurs. That's why they were shut down.
ETA: a little digging says they're a 6th grade class, so they are probably mostly underage.
ETA: I took my flag off the group, at least for now.
LT is a good place, and I want it to last forever (or at least longer than me, which is precisely the same thing).

I killed off a bunch of spam profiles found from recent profile images. I don't bother to post the links here, because, by the time I do, the profiles are already gone.
creating spam lists:
I think Tim did say there was a weighted value for the best flaggers when he rolled out the new system.
I've started seeing posts in Talk about "escort services" in the United Arab Emirates. I've looked at a couple of the profiles and they look like sock-puppets--very recently joined, no books, no other activity. I flagged the profiles as spam and it seems that this was correct--yes? Not just a case of overzealous promotion of a book, but clearly "commercial" spam. To the extent that it's commercial--I doubt if prostitution is legal in the UAE.
They're wasting their time pushing escort services at me anyway. I live in Qatar, and given the current state of affairs in the Gulf, the likelihood of me going anywhere in the UAE for long enough to take advantage of an "escort" is pretty close to zero. Not that I'd do it anyway. I'm a married man, getting on in years, and I'd like to enjoy good health for the time I have left.
I flagged the profiles as spam and it seems that this was correct--yes?
For the record, it doesn't matter if the products or services they are promoting are legal or not. No selling is allowed here, whether it's a prostitute or a sandwich.

I've left a note on the profile. The Talk posts have already been flagged, but unfortunately someone replied to them so they're still there.
Was that a private comment? Because I don't see it.
someone replied to them
TWO people replied! I've left comments for those folks letting them know the problem.
Ah, well. So it goes.
It couldn't hurt, but I'm not sure it would help. The last couple of folks I've seen responding in the threads are not people I've seen participate in this group.

I am often tempted to start a thread for amusing google translations I find in spam profiles.
As I've repeatedly proven, I don't necessarily have the people skills for this. I was tempted to flag the comment (proving the point above), but am asking instead for a kinder, gentler response. Don't flag the profile, please.
ETA: I note that there's a group (created by LegacyIsAMust), so perhaps he's catching on.
Amazing. People have actually accepted a spammer's "friend invitation"!
If someone else would post a note to the new member, I’d appreciate it. It’s awkward to do on my phone.

When I look at the Spam folder, there are no new updates since last Tuesday. I've logged off, and back on. I've used different browsers. I've used my other account. It's not my imagination. It hasn't updated. I haven't seen an uptick in spam (or much of any, to be truthful, probably owing to my not paying attention to most groups).
I took a screen shot, even, which I'm about to upload to my gallery.
I'm just so confused.
You're not the only one. I kind of assumed that something succeeded behind the scenes to prevent this kind of spam altogether? Though I hesitate to call it a bug.
Okay, okay, I didn't really believe that, but I do want to point out that things were still getting in there that shouldn't be, since I retrieved one (by turning it green, of course). That's when I thought that things looked weird, and started to check on it. Compulsively.
I may make a bug report later. We'll see.
