Easton Press GILGAMESH Signed Limited Edition Deluxe - VG+ / EXC

See if anybody else notices it...

elokuu 18, 2018, 1:15 am

>1 GOBOGIE: No slipcase?

elokuu 18, 2018, 2:08 am

That is true but not what I was referring to. Something a little more odd.

elokuu 18, 2018, 3:49 am

>3 GOBOGIE: Oh, not numbered either.

elokuu 18, 2018, 8:20 am

There is an unnumbered Beowulf DLE for sale on eBay, too. I know the promise is for just 1,200 numbered copies, but I wonder how many unnumbered “extras” they print. At what point would this practice violate the spirit of the limited edition?

elokuu 18, 2018, 8:20 am

elokuu 18, 2018, 10:27 am

Or maybe this is how returns with minor defects are handled. Cincinnati isn't too terribly far away from the Kingsport bindery. Let's keep track of the selling locations of all of these unnumbered DLEs we find...

elokuu 18, 2018, 10:34 am

Un-numbered editions are rejects by EP that were not one of the final publications offered to consumers with a slipcase. Flaws found inside or out during manufacturing will place them into this category of rejected books.

Muokkaaja: elokuu 18, 2018, 11:34 am

The Beowulf is slipcased and is shipped directly from Kingsport, Tennessee. It might be one given to a manager or employee of the printer/binder who then put it on the market to raise some cash. There is no mention in the description or the photos of any defects other than the lack of a number.

elokuu 18, 2018, 12:15 pm

Speaking of eBay, I recently purchased a DLE advertised as new and sealed. Upon receiving it, I observed that the shrink wrap did indeed look original (seams in the right places, etc.), but there were a few light smudges on the slipcase - fingerprints perhaps. After opening it, I found that the book itself was not shrink wrapped, as it always is from the bindery. Someone had opened the package to examine the contents and then carefully resealed it.

Fortunately, the smudges rubbed off and there were no other defects, but caveat emptor as always.

Muokkaaja: elokuu 18, 2018, 12:56 pm

I do not personally own this particular book, but find it disturbing that these are out there. They are devaluing the DLE’s that some collectors have paid a premium price for.

Very similar to that huge lot on eBay of EP seconds, I posted sometime last year. They were asking over $10k for them (IMMSMC). I believe someone actually called EP on that. I’m not sure though. All I know is that the listing was taken down shortly after I posted it

elokuu 18, 2018, 1:03 pm

>11 GOBOGIE: I recall that post and I believe myself and a few others sent an e-mail to EP.

I suppose the only good thing is that the seller didn't write an arbitrary number into the book.

elokuu 18, 2018, 2:51 pm

>12 Eastoner: shhhh! The seller may do that and increase the price a $100.

elokuu 18, 2018, 4:30 pm

>5 jroger1:
>7 treereader:
>8 EastonQuality:
Unnumbered copies do not necessarily mean defective copies. Some of these might be reserved as gifts for friends of the publisher. For example, Peter Pauper Press "Leaves of Grass" is one of the most amazing books produced by the press - it was limited, but I have seen quite a few unnumbered copies for sale in recent years. I do not think that availability of unnumbered copies reduces the prices of the books that do have numbers on their limitation statements.
I have also seen unnumbered copies of other limited edition books from several other presses.

elokuu 18, 2018, 9:06 pm

>15 booksforreading:

Quite true but I think there's a growing distrust of how EP and/or its contracted binderies handle returns of DLEs. Peruse enough of threads here and you'll see a bunch of anecdotal evidence that people here have received DLEs returned by other people here.

Easton Press GILGAMESH Signed Limited Edition Deluxe - VG+ / EXC

Here he is with another unnumbered copy of the exact same book. I talked to the seller, BTW very nice fella.

He said he bought a bunch of EP books from a local guy and is now listing them. He didn’t know the history or any further info on the two Gilgamesh unnumbered copies that started this conversation.

I understand that the fact that I don’t like this happening, isn’t going to stop it from happening. That said as a purchaser of many EP books, it just doesn’t sit well with me. How can they not devalue our assumed (prestated) limited number editions, when (this one for example) sold for over a hundred less than ones previously sold... and yes I understand there isn’t a slip case and it’s not sealed.

It just ain’t fittin’

elokuu 21, 2018, 6:43 pm

It would be interesting to hear from EP on the matter. Do they print extra copies for employees, executives, in case of returns? Or are these copies leaking from the Bindery itself?

If the former, they really should indicate that they are spare copies somehow. I mean, I can understand printing a few extra copies for themselves, but maybe number them 0000 or something like that so if they do find their way to the secondary market everyone would know what they are and where they came from. If the latter, well then they might need to have a word with the Bindery.

elokuu 21, 2018, 7:49 pm

For the reasons why several groups are not numbered, would estimate up to one hundred extras are printed in case a few are damaged during production. For the un-numbered books to be sold on the secondary market before numbered ones sell out on the official website is very odd to not be flawed. There are several different titles that I've come across that were mentioned as authors copies limited to 25 or 100. One also mentioned as an authorized edition from a different publisher and film industry associated with the book.

The one that recently sold did have damage to the side, small yet noticeable enough that the seller did mention it.

elokuu 21, 2018, 8:29 pm

appreciate everybody’s input

elokuu 27, 2018, 7:18 pm

Easton Press GILGAMESH Signed Limited Edition Deluxe (NO SLEEVE)

And here’s another one. This one is starting bids at $125

Different seller but basically still coming from the Cincinnati, Ohio area.

Muokkaaja: elokuu 27, 2018, 8:07 pm

>22 GOBOGIE: very Strange. I emailed the person. Here is what he stated, and it is very suspicious.

“I actually can not answer that haha. We just recently moved into this new house and I came across all these books that were left behind in the basement. I was going to throw them away... but then I did some research and found out their worth haha.”

And he is selling a few other unnumbered editions such as Jungle Book and Fascism by Albright.

elokuu 27, 2018, 8:26 pm

We need a secret agent to spy and find out if the pictures where taken in the same location lol as the previous unnumbered eBay Gilgamesh sales.

Muokkaaja: elokuu 28, 2018, 7:58 am

What do people think of a set of sealed Les Mis (Routledge by Easton) for $899? How good of a deal is that?

(This is on eBay now, and I'm just debating purchasing)

Edit: I just bought it. I have never read Les Mis, but based on online reviews and word of mouth it seems amazing. And I have the Count of Monte Cristo set and this will be a nice companion on the shelf at the very least.

elokuu 28, 2018, 9:26 am

>25 Ar40: For what it's worth, I think that's a pretty good deal. Original price was $645, so for a sealed, out of print DLE such as this, I think it's a good price.

elokuu 28, 2018, 10:35 am

>25 Ar40: you will be pleased with the Les Miserables DLE; if I did not have it I certainly would have purchased it at that price. It is as impressive as the Monte Christo DLE. Also in this Routledge set is Hunchback of Norte Dame and Toilers of the Sea, which I recommend. I wish EP had published the other 3 novels in this Routledge set from 1887-1888. EP confirms they have no plans. Thus, I purchased the originals. Those two novels by the way are my #2 and #3 favorite works. I have read them twice and will hopefully read them many more times.

syyskuu 18, 2018, 8:35 am

Going back to the topic of these Gilgamesh copies, I'm certain now that these books were never meant to make it out of the bindery and that they are rejects. I found this current listing on eBay of a different title and it appears to me that EP does in fact indicate when a copy is a special reserve as this one does.

syyskuu 18, 2018, 10:22 am

I saw that too

syyskuu 18, 2018, 12:07 pm

>28 Eastoner: >29 GOBOGIE: I contacted EP on unnumbered DLEs on eBay. They indicate they NEVER print unnumbered DLEs and release them. So they are clueless.

syyskuu 18, 2018, 12:12 pm

Makes one wonder if they will look further into it

syyskuu 18, 2018, 10:43 pm

>28 Eastoner: I agree, was still in print when they were listed on the secondary market. All three un-numbered, non-slipcased books had flaws on the page surfaces or leather cover seen in photos. Good chance they are from a liquidation sale given to an employee when small faults were noticed during production.

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 18, 2018, 11:40 pm

Wow thats pretty neat; I never knew these 'friends/family' books existed! It's a new edition for everyone to collect :D

Muokkaaja: lokakuu 7, 2018, 10:38 pm

>31 GOBOGIE: I'm guessing not :-/

Muokkaaja: joulukuu 20, 2018, 3:54 pm

Saw this on eBay:

For those interested in this set, which is hard to come by, the price is fair.

No connection with the sale or seller, I'm in the USA

joulukuu 20, 2018, 4:46 pm

>35 saintmelville: that looks in great shape and it is a good price. I had to go to England to get my copy from the UK Bradford Exchange. Read it this year. It is a spectacular DLE and I enjoyed it more than the normal EP best loved edition because of the superb illustrations not to mention it’s look and feel.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 2, 2019, 3:19 pm

Found this, EP Item 0462 Illustrated Legends of King Arthur set, up for bid on eBay:

The sale listing for this set is still viewable on the EP site by entering 0462 into the search bar.

This eBay set looks good and near OEM price. EP does has their non-leather dust-jacket set at 10% off in the New Years sale. I have no preference for any non-leather items EP is selling.

No connection with the eBay item or its seller.

tammikuu 3, 2019, 11:19 pm

>37 saintmelville:, if you note, this is only for 3 of the 4 volumes. This would drive me insane to be missing a book, and you will pay much more to try and get that one missing volume.

This set comes up on sale, usually with all four volumes, somewhat regularly. I do prefer the leather cover over the paper cover that EP currently offers for this set online.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 4, 2019, 1:46 am

The listing seems to indicate all 4 volumes are indeed up for bidding. There's a picture which shows 4 volumes included. Although, in the fine print the seller mentions some flaws and a past book plate, caveat emptor.

tammikuu 10, 2019, 11:18 am

Found this while browsing on eBay:

The OEM EP item number for the (6) volume set was 1518 and listed for (6) installments @ 59USD per installment.

The set appears to have some labels though I've used UNDO Label remover (online purchase) for removal of such things without damage.

No connection with the items listed or the eBay seller.

Muokkaaja: tammikuu 30, 2019, 2:43 pm

Another Franklin Oxford Dickens set on eBay:

I have not looked into the sale particulars, though...

No connection with the items listed or the eBay seller.

tammikuu 31, 2019, 9:10 am

I saw this one - it is different than the regular Franklin sets. Different cover art and only quarter leather.

tammikuu 31, 2019, 5:37 pm

There was like a half set that recently sold and the buyer already posted negative feedback. Sounds like they weren’t as nice as they were described. That’s a shame

helmikuu 15, 2019, 3:15 pm

An increasingly rare site on ebay, especially as a set. The OEM price was 59.95USD per volume for a (20) volume set, entitled, Easton Press item 1535, Patrick O'Brians Master and Commander Series.

No connection with the sale item(s) or the eBay seller.

helmikuu 16, 2019, 6:30 pm

Unnumbered copies are typically copies produced either as gifts, or as final proofs. Other than the limitation number they're usually the same book, although sometimes minor defects will have a book removed from the numbering as well.

toukokuu 19, 2019, 9:14 am

Someone has listed the Andrew Lang fairy book set. EP sold out of this set 10+ years ago and if I'm not mistaken, the set was produced as a Collectors Edition @ 59.95 USD per volume for 12 volumes with (1) volume being mailed out each month. Expecting a new slipcased set to exceed 1200 USD, I was hoping for a new production, but alas the waiting continues. :-/

No connection with the seller or the item for sale.

>48 saintmelville: Interesting seller and binder. But they surely need to learn to tool leather, that is one boring binding.

Muokkaaja: toukokuu 28, 2019, 3:39 pm

>49 Wootle: I wonder if that volume and other similar DaVinci works would be picked up by either EP or Folio, both would do a nice binding job. The sale listing mentioned the text as unreadable, but with today's camera and light exposure technologies applied to the original documents, one would think the text could be revealed.

Muokkaaja: toukokuu 31, 2019, 2:47 pm

>49 Wootle:: But they surely need to learn to tool leather, that is one boring binding.

Not only that, but they trimmed the spine off each section rendering the text block into a stack of single sheets which required oversewing, always an inferior method, especially with a thick book. This is an excellent way to make a book more like a bear trap; it doesn't open easily or very flat w/o straining the spine. The two photos show one text block oversewn over cords and the other w/o cords, so I am not at all sure which method was used for the Da Vinci.

Normally, such a book would not have the spines trimmed off the sections and the sewing would be done through the spine and around the cord with the cords then attached to the boards as shown in one of the photos. Oversewing over a cord does not attach the cord directly to the book block.

The flat back also makes me is very weird. And yes, that is a boring binding.

Should anyone ask me if I would buy this book, I would have to say, "No."

Muokkaaja: toukokuu 29, 2019, 5:51 pm

>49 Wootle:, >52 Glacierman:, if my kid had made this binding, sure I would buy it. Otherwise, I'm with you chaps. That is one fugly binding.

kesäkuu 1, 2019, 12:56 pm

As an interesting side note, though not an eBay find, but definitely something that Easton of Folio could publish, in English of course:

Would make for some nice illustrated editions, thus getting (dragging) Easton away from the socio-political book world that their perpetually hanging around.

>55 saintmelville:
I have this edition. It is a Chartwell publication, beautifully illustrated by Gustave Dore, and the only indication of Easton Press involvement is its logo on the spine. It contains other Poe poetry as well, but “The Raven” is clearly featured.

According to the introduction, Harper & Brothers paid Dore the “enormous” sum of 30,000 francs for his illustrations, more than Poe earned in his 20 years of writing.

kesäkuu 2, 2019, 9:24 am

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 2, 2019, 6:24 pm

>55 saintmelville:, >56 jroger1: I have that edition as well, muddy gray prints on cheap paper. I wouldn't recommend it. I would recommend the Poems by Edgar Allan Poe published by Imprimerie Ara Neenne (Paris, France) for Charles Breyner Art Publications (1950) with engravings and ornaments by J. G. Daragnes, 3/4 leather with matching hand marbled boards and end papers. A limited edition of 999 copies.

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 2, 2019, 6:41 pm

Thanks for the tip, >58 kdweber: However, I don’t know a better way to get the Dore illustrations in a reasonably nice edition.

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 3, 2019, 1:54 pm

>56 jroger1:. Dore is simply in a league of his own. Anything illustrated by Dore and bound in leather has demand and commands a price. EP might turn out another printing of the Chartwell edition (bumping up the illustration intensity, slightly and using better quality paper) though I did not notice whether the volume was of the collectors series. I think EP has reissued non-collectors editions, at a later date, that quickly sold out after the first printing.

>58 kdweber:. Those are lovely boards on the Imprimerie edition. I have to spend more time looking up the art, maybe a few eBay or Abe listings to peruse.

I was originally looking for some of the "travels" volumes that Folio has published, many to choose from. The Yangtze Valley and Beyond by Isabella Bird, along with Roberts Holy Land set has kindled my desire to pickup similar volumes.

kesäkuu 3, 2019, 11:33 am

I hope some of the EP collectors devotees picked up this set:

kesäkuu 3, 2019, 12:57 pm

>61 saintmelville:

It was on my Watch list, but 1) I forgot about it and 2) I don't have any spare money due to buying a new house

Definitely wish that, assuming conditions were different, I would have been able to get a bid in.

kesäkuu 3, 2019, 3:38 pm

>59 jroger1: >60 saintmelville: I'm well aware of Dore's allure which is why I picked up the EP edition in the first place but I'd replace it in a shot if someone came out with a decent version. Also, it would have been nice if EP let us know that it was a Chartwell book with just an EP leather binding. If I'd known, I'd have bought the Chartwell edition for $10 while continuing to look for a nice edition; which I suppose, is why EP didn't tell us.

>60 saintmelville: "I was originally looking for some of the "travels" volumes that Folio has published, many to choose from. The Yangtze Valley and Beyond by Isabella Bird, along with Roberts Holy Land set has kindled my desire to pickup similar volumes."

I'm happy with both, very nice editions.

kesäkuu 3, 2019, 4:53 pm

>63 kdweber:
I agree that EP should tell us when their pages were published by someone else. It might make a difference and it might not. I have a couple of EP-bound National Geographic publications that are actually better than EP would have produced themselves (though very pricey). Folio Society used to suffer from the same the same lack of forthrightness, but recently they have been telling us when they are selling another publisher’s books.

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 4, 2019, 4:45 pm

Found this new listing while looking for some Folio items:

I was hoping EP would reissue this set and this time with a slipcase for each book. It been 10+ years since this set was on the site. It originally sold for 59.95USD per volume with a volume shipping each month. The item number was 1535.

No connection to the eBay seller or the item(s) being sold.

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 4, 2019, 5:03 pm

>63 kdweber:, >64 jroger1:, I would add that sometimes when EP puts leather on an existing printing, I don't really care for their cover art. Sometimes they try to reproduce the same picture in gilded relief, and the gold often "bleeds" and blurs the image. In those cases, I would often simply rather have the original publishers dust jacket with a decent cover photo, than a gold blob of a rorschach test.

kesäkuu 11, 2019, 9:10 pm

I got an unnumbered no slipcase DLE of Tom Sawyer in a lot I picked up. Bid for one specific book in a lot of 10 that had two or three others that will make decent gifts, so I didn’t pay much in my mind for the others including that semi? DLE. The book looks perfect though, so other than it not being official it was well worth the few bucks for a nice looking spot on the shelf. Don’t get why it’s unnumbered but it ended up being cheaper than a used non EP copy

Muokkaaja: kesäkuu 21, 2019, 12:40 pm

Found this Illustrated Legends of King Arthur (4) volume sealed set on eBay:

Not a bad price (302USD) thus far, though having many watchers / bidders, for this sealed set. This older set is certainly better than the cloth bound slipcover rendition, which had a limitation of 1000 with 4 installments @ 89USD per installment, that EP was selling some (2) years ago.

The original ad is still on the EP site for the eBay listing:

My cutoff price was 320USD, that being 83USD more than OEM, based on the set having the cover design of item 0462. If having to purchase again, I would likely do the same.

Someone got a great deal! I don't know whom the seller/buyer are, but this is one of my favorite DLEs. A bit sad it went for so little really...

lokakuu 16, 2019, 3:41 pm

>89 astropi: an excellent price, which is why I recommend not posting books for bidding unless you are in a hurry to get cash. Normally bids are accepted within a 7 day window. The vast majority of eBayers list it as “buy it now” with some wiggle room with “make an offer”. I have seen some foolish sales because the eBayer thought he would open things up with a low starting bid. Many times I have seen one winning bid sometimes for $5 because the eBayer was not an experienced seller.

lokakuu 27, 2019, 2:07 pm

I've been looking to acquire a Dickens set for awhile (mostly the Franklin version, but considering Easton also) and came across this one.

After contacting the seller it seems all editions have some amount of fading, with some being worse off than others (from the pictures). What are your thoughts on the value of this set in the condition it is in ($900-$1000 seems to high in my opinion). Also, aside from the pigment in the leather being faded, is it possible that the leather itself may be weaker/brittle due to the UV exposure?

Disclaimer: No affiliation with the item posted, merely a prospective buyer

marraskuu 15, 2019, 3:13 pm

>92 mortalalliance:, I agree with you, this seems a bit high given the amount of leather fading. And if it is faded, I might expect some level of dry leather possibly leading to potential cracking, but that would be hard to know.

marraskuu 15, 2019, 4:17 pm
