There is a very uncommon 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that matches with the 3-Volume blue set. This is the only one I've seen around:

>1 Wootle: There is also a hollow fish/fish outline cover for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea from the 100 Greatest series. Also, 3-vol set of Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Mysterious Island in blue has distinct spine design whereas the one in brown (published as part of Reader's Choice) has identical spine designs :).

I wish I had Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas DLE... Actually, it would be nice if EP opted for one particular type - leather, clam shell, DLE w/ slipcase - and issued all major Verne works!

>3 EPsonNY:
“I wish I had Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas DLE...”

You aren’t missing anything. It is my top example of a bad DLE. The translation omits one-fourth of the original French text, and the type is so choppy that it is hard to read in places.

>4 jroger1: I suppose it was the learning stage in which mistakes, smaller and bigger, may have been permitted. By now EP should have perfected the model, oh wait..., but it hasn't. Sometimes when I read this forums' members' insights I cannot help but wonder where EP get their inspiration from... because there is so much of it here...

I still would like to see some consistency. Instead of issuing some titles in leather, some in clam shells and yet others in slipcases, it would be nice to see a well designed matching set akin to Hemingway's 19-vol colorful set.

>5 EPsonNY:
Since that experience I’ve been afraid to buy any more of Verne’s DLEs. I might make an exception for the most recent one, though, because the other illustrator-signed editions have been spectacular.

There is a new version of Journey to the Center of the Earth DLE that I saw on EP website today.

Nevermind you already had it, lol.

To anyone: Is the 100 greatest version of 20K all brown copies, or are there some blue or black ones out there? Ebay listings make it hard to determine.

Re: 20K Leagues 100 greatest series: I think I am seeing brown with solid fish, black with solid and black with hollow fish. I don't think I have found brown with hollow fish. Anyone?

17treereader
toukokuu 23, 2018, 11:59 pm

My copy of 20,000 Leagues came from the 100 Greatest Series and is brown with hollow fish.

However, I must point out that it took me several tries under different lighting types before I could decide it was indeed a dark brown and not black. It is quite possible that some of the confusion stems from this subtle color difference.

toukokuu 24, 2018, 12:04 am

>17 treereader: The first two pics I have under that title are pretty easy to decide on the color, the third pic, not so much. Unfortunately most of the ebay photos are similar to the third one, indeterminate. But its good to know, it appears anyway that there were 4 versions then. Two brown and two black.

I have added a lot of photos to this collection. All of the over-sized thumbs are the ones that have photos from my personal copies.

Right now I am reading The Mysterious Island in the Famous Edition and am really enjoying it.

I'm thinking of starting a Vernian page here on LT if anyone is interested. There are two publishers that are doing great work with translations of Verne. I've been reading a lot about the best translators. Here are the two publishers:

BearManor
Wesleyan

I've ordered a couple of copies from each publisher. I believe they are all on Amazon as well if you are more comfortable there.

Here is the Vernian Society page index of books. Clicking on the title takes you to the recommendation of which edition to read. Extremely helpful. Verne

I added a lot of photos to the Michael Strogoff album. I'll add more every 100 pages I make it through. Link in post 1.

How hard to find is the matching blue binding Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, that matches the 3 Volume Set Of:
Around the World in Eighty Days,
The Mysterious Island
A Journey to the Center of the Earth

(Copied from ur post)
Details: Greatest Books Ever Written, blue binding that matches the three volume set below, Translated by Mercier Lewis, Illustrated by Edward A Wilson, Introduction by Fletcher Pratt

As if I don’t have other rare as hen’s teeth books, I’ve search in vain for years... now I have another 😂😂😂

Thanks Wootle {SIGH}

>22 GOBOGIE: It's not to hard actually. I found it immediately on Abe when I decided to get it. I did email the seller to make sure it was the correct version. Since then I've seen at least two copies sell on ebay for $60 or less. If you just want it to match the set then that is fine, but if you want it to read, then buy a different copy for a better translation. The Franklin Library copy is better translated by Brunetti and supposedly the best would be the Oxford classics edition translated by Butcher.

>22 GOBOGIE: the Franklin Edition is a decent match in blue, though slightly smaller.

In Search of the Castaways hit the limited quantities list today. Surprised it wasn't sooner.

Castaways dropped 25 copies in just over 24 hours. At this rate, it'll be gone in a couple of days. Don't hesitate if you have any intention of acquiring it.

I don't suppose this is the case anymore, is it? I realize it's 4 years later since the original post, but I've been trying to see if I can find a copy of this blue 20K Leagues before I bite the bullet on the other 3 Verne volumes of this set. Can't seem to find it anywhere.

I don't see any on ebay at the moment, but give it a couple months and see what turns up.

If anyone is still looking for the blue binding 20k Leagues to match their 3 vol set, there is 1 on ebay right now, unfortunately it is at an inflated price, but at least it is sealed.

Does anyone here know if these are abridged or complete translations? I would expect abridged, but I'm hardly a specialist when it comes to these.

33jroger1
Muokkaaja: joulukuu 27, 2023, 3:40 pm

>32 SF-72:
They are almost certainly abridged, some of them heavily so. Wikipedia quotes someone as saying that no great writer has been more ill-served by translators than Verne. EP has published two DLEs of 20,000 Leagues, second of which was recent and complete, but the first one excised approximately one-fourth of the story.

The set might still be worth it for the vintage illustrations, but I would seek out recent translations for reading.

Some of the recommended translations here ~ https://file770.com/a-bibliography-of-jules-verne-translations/
Another good page on translations ~ https://www.sil.si.edu/ondisplay/julesverne100/verne_reading.htm

Wesleyan Press has done well with translating and restoring text in their publications, I have read some of them, nice hardcover books ~ https://www.weslpress.org/search-results/?keyword=jules+verne

Oxford press has been releasing some with the really nice translations by Butcher, they can be had easily on Amazon.
