Oooh, Thanks!

Most inviting to me are Sweet Thursday, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Run Silent, Run Deep, It Can't Happen Here, Beyond Thirty, ...

... heck, I like most all of them!

I dont' read westerns too much, but the Readers Choice western selections have been nice. I almost feel like starting.

To my shame, I am not familiar with any of these works!!
Have you read any of the novels on the list? Do you have favorites among them that you feel you would very much like to get in leather (like sdawson)?

>3 booksforreading:
I know some of the titles and authors, but I haven’t read any of them either. For the most part they look like light reading that I wouldn’t care to make a permanent part of my library, but they are relatively inexpensive for leather books. Apparently, they are not illustrated.

Based on author alone, there are 4-6 I'm likely to consider, which is an improvement over most years, when it's only 2-4. Can't wait to get the flyer and check out the details...

It can’t happen here is a prescient novel written in 1935 on the rise of fascism in America supported by conservative evangelical Christians under the guise of making America great again. Yadda Yadda Yadda.

I had it in my EP Sinclair Lewis set, read it last year (3 Stars) and sold it pretty fast since it was in great demand after the election. The 4 Volume set is currently on eBay.

I am not familiar with any of these titles, but am interested in the westerns since I love western novels, movies, and TV shows. I'll also have to do some research online for these titles so I can familiarize myself about the stories before I choose which ones to buy. I don't buy the EP Reader's Choice titles because they are new and I don't own any of them. I only purchase books that I am interested in reading.

Yeah, "It Can't Happen Here" has been quite popular! Although it was originally written about Huey Long (another Long-inspired book is "All the King's Men", which was made into an AMAZING edition by the LEC)! I wonder if the EP edition will have any illustrations? A frontispiece perhaps?

I am on travel this week, I sure hope this is waiting for me when I get home.

Regarding the titles, I have read several of them, and would like to have an EP copy of them. Cannery Row is my favorite Steinbeck book. Believe it or not, it was twenty years after reading it before I knew bout the Sweet Thursday sequal. While I can appreciate the writings of Sinclair Lewis, I don't think his works have aged as well. It can be hard for today's generation to relate to his writing. Still, I like him, as I can appeciate his works for the times they were written. I have Easton Press edition of Babbit (read) and a Franklin edition Arrosmith (not yet read), and Heritage Press edition of Main Street (not yet read), and a trade edition of Kingsblood Royal (read). The latter is an example of a book that needs to be considered in its time and does not hold up well. It deals with racism from a very white perspective. A white man discovers he is something like 1/16th black and the repercussions (in the 1940's) of this. Sinclair Lewis presenting the evils and absurdities of racism of course. But if this were to be written today, the book itself would likely be considered racist I believe. But at the time, it was an attempt to refute racism.

16HugoDumas
maaliskuu 21, 2018, 11:33 am

>15 sdawson: have not read Babbit, Main Street, and Arrowsmith which I have in my library. Certainly Elmer Gantry (Evangelicals) and It Can’t Happen Here (Fascism) have aged quite well and are as relevant today as they were when he wrote them. Not keepers though.

Any ideas when these titles will appear on the Easton Press website?

18Wootle
maaliskuu 21, 2018, 4:50 pm

For those of us that may or may not receive this flyer, can you please also post scans of the paper you're supposed to return to EP with your book selections; or let us know what the offer code is?

>17 Matthew1956:

To receive these books at the discounted rates you have to return the flyer that EP may or may not mail to you. Once we find out what the offer code is, we *should* be able to call customer service and make the order with that code.

Alternatively, these books will eventually be on the website, but they will be $5-10 more expensive and will show up several months from now.

This is common procedure for EP. They are still a mail order business with a website. They have never been in a hurry to do anything. Patience is key when dealing with EP.

>28 Matthew1956:

One is pre-ordering them and is not charged until they are shipped. They will ship when published. I also do this, for instance, with normal trade editions through Amazon on books that will be published in the coming year.

32mortalalliance
maaliskuu 23, 2018, 4:39 pm

>28 Matthew1956:

I believe they do this early, pre-production, to get an idea of the quantity to produce. I also think this is why they're able to give us a small discount on the book prices. I could be 100% wrong however on both these assumptions.

By the way, I placed an email order yesterday and Joe in customer service took care of me early this morning.

33treereader
maaliskuu 23, 2018, 8:57 pm

>28 Matthew1956:

This approach has generally been limited to just the Reader's Choice titles. When they announce other books, they're generally available or both ordering and shipping within a month's time. The Reader's Choice titles are a bit more special - limited runs and and usually new, as in never published by EP in any form before. Some will come in earlier than others; I suspect the first ones will start arriving in June. It's not as bad as it sounds.

>30 jroger1:
I'm game for the moon trip.

Your print run sizing-to-discount balance idea could very well be true.

34EPsonNY
maaliskuu 24, 2018, 10:11 am

Nothing easier to make money than to choose a lot of out-of-copyright titles, use thinner paper and cover boards (covers warp more easily on newer titles), use cheaper cover gilt (newer editions rub off more easily), & include no illustrations other than the frontpiece...

Beyond Thirty (The Lost Continent) Edgar Rice Burroughs – copyright expired
The Evil Guest by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu – copyright expired
Flashman by George Mcdonald Fraser – 1969, testing water for a new series… (?)
The Last of the Plainsmen by Zane Grey – copyright expired; to complete Zane Grey westerns (?)
It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis – copyright expired; perhaps to add to the 4 books series
The King in Yellow by Robeert w Chambers – copyright expired, True Detective influence :D
Run Silent, Run Deep by EdwardL Beach Jr. – 1955, may be a good book about subs, but I love my Das Boot film
Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck - !!! – will be a nice addition to the 8-volume Steinbeck set
The Untamed by Max Brand – copyright expired
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson – 3rd book by Easton for horror fans

35treereader
maaliskuu 24, 2018, 11:30 am

>34 EPsonNY:

You seem surprised about this. The going rate for in-copyright books from EP is somewhere in the $100-200 range, and 98% of all books EP ever offers are out of copyright.

What do you mean "3rd book by Easton for horror fans"? They've published lots of horror novels. Do you mean 3rd by Shirley Jackson?

EPsonNY's statement, like many of his other statements, is an over generalization for the books in the Reader's Choice series.

Unfortunately, many of the books will be limited to only a frontspiece but some of them will have multiple illustrations within; see this years The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (but ignore the fact that EP screwed up producing this title).

I agree; but that matter is irrelevant with regards to number of illustrations/book in Reader's Choice.

I can’t directly answer your question, but if you’re referring to the 2018 Reader’s Choice Books, it’s highly unlikely that any are sold out right now. Last year, and seemingly this year, they seem to be keeping these off of their website for a period hopefully to allow those of use who “reserved” them to get a first crack at ‘em.

Can you get these on a subscription delivered/billed at the rate of one per month or do you have to take them all at once? Seems like everyone got theirs over a short period of time, but I really like the excitement of getting a new book each month.

>105 eastonlionel:

You can set these up as monthly books, however at that "slow" of a rate, you are almost guaranteed to miss out on some of the more desirable titles as they will inevitably go out of stock prior to being sent to you. To avoid this, I set it up such that I receive 2 books per month and generally do not have any issues with availability.

To anyone that has received these, what are the item numbers for each title? I think they start with 3361.

When they list these titles for $74.95 does that include shipping, or is shipping extra?

Also, does this mean they are no longer taking orders through the Reader's Choice offer of $60+shipping per book?

112Wootle
lokakuu 11, 2018, 8:58 pm

That includes shipping as is usual. You can still subscribe to the series and get the $64.95.

Just placed an order and was told Run Silent, Run Deep is down to 16 copies, so they are sending that first. I was concerned about It Can't Happen Here, and he said they have over 300 copies of that title at this point. I chose five of the ten and asked to get them once per month. Not a fan of the horror/Gothic genre, so avoided those.

I have to say, I'm excited to be getting an EP book each month again.

I received Beyond Thirty yesterday and this title just like Run Silent Run Deep is using the lower grade of leather binding that has no leather grain details like past titles have. This is very dissapointing and l'm considering sending Beyond Thirty back to EP. I also returned Valiant Ambition which is from the Military History Collection because of the newer leather binding finish. If EP continues to use this new leather binding process on all future titles I will not be purchasing any new books from them in the future.

I agree. Feels more like a Barnes and Noble leather.

I certainly agree that the leather is different somehow, but do we know that it is inferior?

118Tolkienfan
lokakuu 21, 2018, 5:28 pm

>117 Eastoner: That's a good question and I don't know if this new leather finish is inferior to the original EP leather binding finish. It could be the same leather but just a different look now. The odor is very strong and nothing like the leather scent that ks typical of EP.

119eastonlionel
lokakuu 21, 2018, 5:33 pm

>117 Eastoner: Agree. All I can say is several books from the 100 greatest that I received from EP in the 1990s had the type of leather people are talking about. I could post pictures so you can see it directly, but I believe this is not inferior leather in any way. All of the title I have with this leather still look "like new" to me. However, I do have a few books with the "grained" leather from the 100G that have not aged well, and appear to need something to restore their condition.

In addition, the Hound of the Baskervilles DLE had the same leather (without graining). See my review of this edition with pictures here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/161905#4587281

>119 eastonlionel:

You’re right! I hadn’t really thought of it, but I do recall now having picking up an older 20k Leagues Under the Sea with, what I thought at the time, was a very strange grain. Now that I think about it, it is this exact ‘smooth’ grain. Whether it’s technically inferior or not, it certainly feels and looks inferior to the previous grain that we’re used to seeing.

Unfortunately every book I’ve received recently (Including The Children of Hurin) has this “new” grain.

lokakuu 21, 2018, 7:23 pm

>120 mortalalliance:
I also have the 20,000 Leagues DLE and the Hound DLE, as well as others like the Poe DLE and the Christmas Carol DLE. All have the same “smooth” grain. It doesn’t feel inferior to me at all; they simply chose not to emboss it with the fake grain they have used in the past. I hadn’t even thought about it until this thread.

122Tolkienfan
lokakuu 21, 2018, 7:45 pm

Is this finer smooth grain acceptable to everyone here over the traditional classic leather grain that we expect for EP books and am I just over reacting to this change? Now I'm thinking that I shouldn't have returned two of my titles and am just over thinking this!

123eastonlionel
lokakuu 21, 2018, 7:54 pm

>122 Tolkienfan: All I can say is the different types of leather is nothing new for EP as some may think. As I mentioned, I have books I got directly from EP in the 1990s (started the 100 Greatest in 1989) that have the exact same leather type people are talking about. I personally, don't have any problem with this type of leather vs. the "grained" leather of many EP books, and have never returned an EP book because of a different look to the leather. This is personal choice, but I'd say get used to variations in the leather EP book binders use, because it's been that way for decades. I believe I read somewhere that EP uses several book binders for their offerings, so this can also be a result of different leathers used by different binderies.

Muokkaaja: lokakuu 21, 2018, 8:16 pm

EP has published a few books in recent years that have a smooth “plastic” feel to them that I don’t like. Supposedly, though, it is real leather simply buffed and processed in a different way. Some members here said they liked it.

125Eastoner
lokakuu 21, 2018, 8:42 pm

I haven't made up my mind about the issue yet and also haven't returned any books. The thing I don't like most is the accompanying smell although I have noticed that it fades.

>123 eastonlionel: Thanks for the clarification concerning the various leather grain styles due to the different binders EP uses. I had no idea that this different leather grain finish existed with EP and assumed they switched to a cheaper lower quality leather binding process to cut cost and continue to sell at the same price point. I own 120 EP books and I have just started receiving titles with the finer smoother leather binding that does not resemble the deep grained leather binding.

127Arknight
lokakuu 22, 2018, 10:09 am

Just wanted to add that I have also received a few books with the new leather style, and although it does feel different then previous EP books, it also does not feel the same as the Barnes & Noble series. I have some of those, as well, and they have a much different plastic feel, that is much smoother than the new EP leather.

128Tolkienfan
lokakuu 22, 2018, 11:33 am

>127 Arknight: I agree with you that the new leather binding finish is not comparable to the B&N leather bound classics because I own some of them and they are smooth without the texture or look of bonded leather.

129Tolkienfan
lokakuu 22, 2018, 11:39 am

Has anyone here received their copy of The Untamed and The Last of The Plainsmen? If you have, were they done in the traditional leatherbound finish or this new leatherbound finish I've described? Just curious to know if all of the Reader's Choice 2018 titles are using the newer type of leather binding or if it is a mixture. So far, the two titles I received have the newer style.

Buying un-stamped leather may be an attempt to lower production cost either directly by EP or by the printer/binder... Aside from the smooth, almost unnatural feel, I have also noticed the design is barely stamped into the leather. It feels like it was painted or printed with barely any indentation...

"Most pigskin has been stamped with a grain because natural pigskin has pores and resembles human skin. It is durable, but it’s generally a harder, stiffer leather type."

>131 Eastoner: Thats good to know and I guess I'll have to decide if I want to continue to receive the new EP books that have this change in the leather. I really want the titles I ordered, but I'm a stickler when it comes to details and this is one of those that has me a little bent out of shape. It may sound petty to others, but changes like this will take me a little time to get used to.

I don't mind the grain so much as EPsonNY had mentioned the (in my opinion) inferior shallow, design stampings we are now getting to accompany it.

I reached out to EP customer service representative Johnni and shared my concern regarding the change to the leather binding on the newer titles. My email was sent to someone else at EP about my concern and this was the response I received which was very helpful and helped me make the decision to keep my titles I was going to send back.

We have not switched binderies. We are now using Cowhide leather. Older books from us may be Pigskin because we use to use that in the past.

Our books are 100% genuine leather.

Our book binding leather is not the same as leather used for clothing or upholstery. Book leather is tanned by a different process so it is very durable.

The decorative finish and color on our books that is applied may make it appear shiny; like plastic, but please be assured that this is only the appearance of the top coat and the base material in genuine leather.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you,

Lina, EP Customer Service
