Hello! I don't know how this will work this year.. I seem to have largely fallen away from "social media" since buggy was born (can't believe he's almost a year!), aside from Litsy (a book app), where it's easy to pop in and out without necessarily having to do much thinking ;) You can find me there under the same name (avanders), if you're interested.

I do plan to try ROOTing this year, though. New baby (toddler!) notwithstanding!

My goals for 2018 are:

24 ROOTs

& 36 BOOKS TOTAL (ROOTs or otherwise).
Trying to up the percentage, while remembering that life is crazy busy right now and I will have a harder time focusing on reading...

Thank you for visiting! I've been just terrible about staying on top of the posts here!! But I've been reading... Unfortunately not very many ROOTs!! I know, I need to work on that... I'll include a reading summary below. I've also acquired altogether too many books this year already. Working on THAT too! ;D

Buggy is growing like a weed. A WEED!! He's a year, but in many ways already acts like he's 2 ;P He LOVES books and being read to (he'd like to be able to read on his own too, but he's not quite there yet ;D), he RUNS already, and he talks a whole lot of gibberish. We're excited to hear his first real-real word. He does repeat "baba" and seems to know what that one means (bottle), but otherwise, he just communicates (very well) through body language, eyes, tone, and hands. Here!

. .

He's in a new day care (his prior one was POOH and we pulled him from it) and he's LOVING the new place and all his new teachers.

my life has been pure chaos. On top of Buggy/toddler-life, my job has been very chaotic and uncertain lately with a LOT of change and upheaval presently & on the horizon (potentially precipitating a change in job)... we've been in the process of packing/moving and the buy-a-house process has been a nightmare (much worse than last time!)... my dad's health is still not good and there are particularly bad days... there's been a lot of change with my sister that impacts us on a weekly basis (though not daily, usually ;))... and my husband's business is doing well, but still in the beginning phases, so has been difficult coordinating that along w/ the move/house stuff and my job stuff. So happy there are books to escape to ;)

Also... have y'all seen that LT purchased Litsy? I posted on the "talk" post about that... I'm happy to answer any questions anyone may have :)

Oh and >11 bragan: I really enjoyed Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance ... I thought it was such a pretty novel. It had magic and love in it, but it wasn't heavy handed with any of it. I just enjoyed it... Have you gotten to it?

Reading Summary

Here are books I've read this year:
1. Latte Trouble (audio library book)
2. Gwendy's Button Box (ROOT 1)
3. Jealousy (Litsy mail postal book club)
4. Ends of the World (3rd in trilogy) (audio library book)
5. The Cracked Spine (Litsy Coffee Bean Book Club Mail Book Group)
6. Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance (ROOT 2 and LT ER audio and audio library book (because the ER was broken))
7. Dark Flowers (LT ER audio)
8. Ricochet Joe (kindle in motion)
9. A Dark and Stormy Murder (Litsy Coffee Bean Book Club Mail Book Group and audio library book)
10. Death in Dark Blue (audio library book)
11. The Missing Ink (Litsy Coffee Bean Book Club Mail Book Group)
12. Brownies and Broomsticks (Litsy Coffee Bean Book Club Mail Book Group)
13. These Ruthless Deeds (2nd in series) (audio library book)
14. Locke and Key (library book - graphic novel)

And I'm currently reading:
1. Moonheart (audio from library.. and purchased a used book too :))
2. These Vengeful Souls (third in trilogy) (ebook borrowed from library)
3. The Very Best of Charles de Lint (will be ROOT 3!)
4. Everyone's a Aliebn (ROOT 4!)
5. A Tale of Two Biddies (ROOT 5!)

So. By this count, I've only read 2 ROOTs so far and I only have 3 pending.
I need to update my goal :D

Hope you're all doing fabulously!!!

How lovely to see you, Aletheia! Your boy is gorgeous! And it sounds like life is non-stop busy too. I'm so glad you've found a good nursery for him now. When you find a good one you just know. My A is going to be leaving hers this summer and starting SCHOOL, I suspect I will be more upset than she will because the nursery is just so brilliant, I will really miss them!

I am app-lite, approaching app-zero, so never got into Litsy, but I had spotted the takeover.

With all that's going on, it's amazing that you have any reading time at all! Buggy is gorgeous!!! And huge!!! Shouldn't he only be, like, a month old??

I'm glad you liked the Stephen King. I bought that one a while back and have not read it yet. I just finished Joe Hill's Strange Weather and loved it. Like father, like son.

Hang in there, kiddo. Things will settle down... just can't promise when. :D

Hi Aletheia!

Sorry about the chaos and craziness, but thank you for sharing updates about Buggy and your reading.

I saw the Litsy-LT thing, too and just read your post. I think I'll stick with LT, just because I already spend way too much time online HERE and can only imagine another website taking my time.

>18 avanders: Growing like a weed, indeed! My goodness, look how big he's getting. Glad to see he's taking after you on the bookishness already. :)

Sorry to hear you're life's been full of, er, interesting times lately, though. Here's hoping it quiets down sometime. Still, during times like that, we can be very, very glad we have books to help keep us sane.

I still haven't read Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance, but after that reaction, I may want to get to it sooner rather than later.

Speaking of magical books, I see you've just read Locke and Key. Do you have the rest of the series? I absolutely loved them, but really wished I'd read them all closer together.

You really have had a lot on your plate - just moving house is a major life event and you're juggling several at once - but prioritising is key and sounds like you've got yours right: Buggy first, and finding some time for yourself (yay, lots of good reads!). Peace of mind is what gives you the energy to deal with all the other stuff. Good luck!

Hi Aletheia, So glad to see you here again. And Buggy! He's gorgeous! And 'reading', WOW. I love that.

I hope your life will be less busy and things are settling down to a nice pace.

Hi Aletheia. Great to see you back on LT and always good to hear how fast your boy is growing up. My children are now teens which means a) they have gotten very fond of their rooms - when they are home and b) you just don't see them progressing day-to-day like when they were younger.

Hope all the unwanted chaos clears itself up.

Just wanted to say 'hi,' Aletheia! Cute pix of your sweet boy :).

I loved Locke and Key, too, although I've never finished the series. I have them all, I just have never gotten around to them! Maybe this year. Take care & hope you're doing well.

Hello everyone!! I've read all of your sweet and thoughtful and wonderful comments. I miss you all!!
My life got hard. But I have a beautiful baby boy and I've kept reading :)
The quick & dirty version:
Unfortunately, my dad died about 2 months ago. After that, I've been working to pack my mom up and move her into our house, maintain toddler-life, deal with a crazy chaotic work life, and all the other extras life threw at me over the past 2 months. I mostly suppressed and avoided dealing with my loss, and that, combined with what is dubbed "too much stress for too long," I ended up in the hospital with a critical case of ITCP -- essentially, my body started attacking itself and I was out of platelets. This meant that if anything had happened (and thank God it didn't!!), I could have quickly bled out and died because I no longer had any ability to clot. Oops!

There were signs... I just had all kinds of explanations for everything and ignored some major body-shutting-down type signs until it was almost too late. Please, friends, pay attention to what is happening in your bodies! I am on the mend. I am on aggressive treatment and the hope & prayer is that this is a one-time thing!! But it was certainly a wake up call that I need to pay better attention to myself and allow myself to hurt, heal, and need.

baby
But, as I say, the "baby is wonderful and growing and reading and perfect. Here's his dirty little face during one of his meal/reads. ;)

books
And reading! It's been audio books, graphic novels, real novels, kindle books... I've been reading. :)
The full list is in one of the early posts, above. But here's the update, briefly:
- These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks 2)
- Brownies and Broomsticks
- Welcome to Lovecraft (Locke & Key graphic novels 1-6) all
- These Vengeful Souls (These Vicious Masks 3)
- Roadside Picnic (Strugatsky)
- Price Guide to the Occult (LT ER)
- Murder Most Frothy (Coffeehouse Mystery 4)
- Paper Girls, Vol. 1 (volumes 1 to 3) .. first two were and third was
- Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1)
- Decaffeinated Corpse (Coffeehouse Mystery 5) (I've listened to a bunch of these on audio)
- Moonheart (de Lint) (what a find!)
- Sit, Stay, Slay
- French Pressed (Coffeehouse Mystery 6)
- Uglies (a fun re-read of the first 2, and then I finally read the others!)
- And these 2 graphic novels: Ugles: Shay's Story and Ugles: Cutters
- The Toymakers (Dinsdale)
- Pretties (Uglies 2)
- Soulless: The Manga (Carriger)
- Specials (Uglies 3)
- Wicked Autumn (Max Tudor 1)
- Red Sky at Night (MacKay) (LT ER)
- Extras (Uglies 4) (actually, not really part of the "series") and it was okay...
- Quidditch Through the Ages (Whisp/Rowling)
- Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too (not as impressed w/ this as everyone else?)
- A Tale of Two Biddies
- Midnight Bayou (read while in New Orleans)
- The Stepford Wives
- All the Ever Afters (LT ER) (disappointing)
- The King Tides
- The Woman in the Window
- Espresso Shot (Coffeehouse Mystery 7) (really, I just read this one so I could get the Christmas one, which I knew was next ;))
- Caught Dead Handed (Witch City Mystery 1) (I really enjoyed reading this one set in Salem!)
- Holiday Grind (Coffeehouse Mystery 8) (Coyle) (worth it!)
- Coffin Hill Vol. 1 (Kittredge) (intriguing, pretty, but poorly executed)

READING
- The Complete Collection of the Tragedy Series (Dewey) this is a graphic thing... it's surprisingly funny!
- The Secret, Book and Scone Society (Miracle Springs 1) (Adams) this is making me rather happy right now!
- Kalpa Imperial: The Greatest Empire that Never Was (Gorodischer/Le Guin, T) dense... is there a plot? Does anyone know? I haven't reached it yet.... It all feels like backstory so far.. interesting, but historical.
- The Very Best of Charles de Lint I know, I've been reading this one forever.. maybe I'll pick it back up soon ;)

So sorry about your dad. When I lost my dad (years ago), I did the same thing: just avoided the grief and went on with my life. It did catch up with me, though! (boy, did it!) .... Yikes, that hospital stay sounds scary. Take care of yourself!

Aletheia, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Just like LadyoftheLodge, I lost my dad in 2006 and still miss him every day. I hope things work out having your Mom living with you - at a minimum it's great for Malachi to have his grandmother so close to hand (my grandmother lived with us until she passed away at the age of 82 when I was 10 and it was wonderful for the three of us kids). I am very glad that you're on the mend from the ITCP.

I hope you continue taking care of yourself. And thank you for sharing the pics of Malachi - he is a stunningly beautiful boy.

And yay for reading, of course.

Adding my voice to all the others, Aletheia. I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad, and that hospital stay sounds super-scary - take care of yourself, and consider yourself in my thoughts and prayers.

Malachi is so handsome!

I'm very glad to hear that you're alive and doing, if not exactly well, then at least better. That is juat so much to have to deal with in such a short period of time. My condolences on your dad.

Its good that you have found time for books in among all of this, and that's a pretty great reading list, I think. And a very cute little reader you have, too!
