I want to read or give away 20 books by authors on my shelves whose last names start with A.

I like your attempt at reading systematically. Good luck with your ROOTing!

I tried reading alphabetically for about 6 months--cleared out the A,B,C's....but then it got too restrictive!

Welcome back and good luck with your alphabetical challenge!

Good luck with ROOTing all those A authored books!

Thank you both!
Currently on Chapter 42 of The Tale of Genji - trying to finish it before the new year.
Major spoilers-
So Genji and Murasaki just died. This book is called The Tale of Genji, there's 400 pages left, and Genji dies? It's a big shocker. I'm extremely curious where we're going now. Genji was an ass so the book might be better without him, but I don't like Yugiri any better.
Edit-
Apparently the 3rd princess's son now a major character. That was quite a time skip.

Haha, well it's 4 months into the year and I've read Anthills of the Savanna by Chinua Achebe. 1/20
Luckily I've got "or give away" in my reading goal so it will be met. :P
Also read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. Incredibly soul-crushing book.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams 2/20.
I was grateful for the large amount of white space following chapter breaks because it meant less text to read. I did like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when I read it in high school, but I'm wondering if that wasn't more about admiring that group of upperclassmen who quoted it constantly.

>20 Settings: I read that a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much (although I wasn't convinced by the electric monk, and Dirk himself annoyed me a bit). I really enjoyed the word play and just the writing in general (I've still never read THHGTTG, but will get to it eventually). I can see it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though.

Glad you enjoyed it. It tried so hard to be witty and funny that I felt bad not enjoying it much. :(

>22 Settings: It's funny how the same thing hits so many different nerves with different people, isn't it? I didn't feel it was trying hard at all (although I do wonder if I'd have liked it as much if I'd already read Hitchhikers Guide - it was my first introduction to Adams). And then there are books that loads of people love that just have me scratching my head wondering what on earth the fuss is about!

Going to donate 4 books without reading them today. Stories of Eva Luna, Island Beneath the Sea, and Aphrodite by Isabel Allende, and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams.
That makes 12/20.
Remaining books by authors who start with A.
8 books by Margaret Atwood
Scandinavian Humor & Other Myths by John Louis Anderson
2 books by Jorge Amado
Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo A. Anaya
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche
Speedboat by Renata Adler
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim
Bird-Eyes by Madelyn Arnold
The Ford by Mary Austen
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov
The Upanushads, Njal's Saga, Songs from a Jade Terrace, and The Arabian Nights Vol. 1 by Anonymous
If I fail to read any more A author ROOTs it'll be the Atwood books that get donated. Need to save my Atwoods.

>32 Settings: Uh-oh. That sounds either like you've just read a turkey that you're desperate to get rid of, or you've acquired a lot more books!

As vowed, I have to give away the difference in A-authors. Might be able to sneak in the other half of Scandinavian Humor and maybe The Upanishads 'cause it's short - but 7 books in a few days isn't happening. Probably have the same goal next year with B-authors.
