I keep the leaflet brochures that come in the mail for each book. The price is always difficult to find on those things but they probably represent the most detailed description of each book.

Also, I was just being facetious: EP surely has a more elaborate product archive and sales metrics database, but it amused me to imagine that they might give up their "spreadsheet" for a newsgroup's research.

Nice Wootle. I'm curious, if you email EP and ask them for the order of all DLEs released, could they give that? It would be nice to know!

I have been searching the WayBackMachine for those middle of the list books that EP erased from the site after selling out. I have found pages for most of them, but they do not include the pics, so I have not updated those links yet, waiting to see if I can find a page with all the information instead of partials.

Two that I know of are The Call of the Wild by Jack London which I believe was considered a DLE and there was a DLE for "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".

While it might be nice to have them separated, EP has not been consistent with their labels. For example, Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and "Island" clearly belong to the Illustrated group, but the Web description simply calls them Limited.

The confusion occurred because they printed half and waited to see what demand was. It was indeed OOP for a short period of time. I bought an aftermarket set at a slight markup only to find that EP printed the remaining 400. The footnote on the 1887 and 1888 set is due to me complaining to the VP of EP to clarify the printing. They need to place a mention on their website when a set is out of stock and when it will be reprinted, so that collectors do not mustakingly purchase from the aftermarket.

By the way only 87 left, for real this time.

I remember a few limited editions that were never placed on the DLE page. The prices were lower than most DLEs, and there was a discussion at the time as to whether they might not have been sufficiently deluxe. We were wondering (tongue in cheek, I think) whether a new category might be needed - e.g., "semideluxe." I don't remember whether Les Mis was one of those sets, but I doubt it because of the relatively high price.

Though the original was really in 1887. EP chose to publish the second edition of 1888 with one significant missing drop case errors in one chapter as reported in earlier posts. Thankfully I found this gem at Strand book store in NYC in mint condition lower than the original selling price ($600)

Paradise Lost is one of those editions that might qualify but may not. What does everyone think? Limited to 800 I believe, $300 for the set, about to go out of print.

Granted, I still managed to collect just over 30 titles, and I still have several on my wish list, I don't try to get all those I may like to have. Like both of you, I have 25 or 30 DLEs, mostly from the early years. I still buy one occasionally that holds a special interest for me, but I no longer expect them to match the quality of the early ones.

The ones I find most intriguing now are the Deluxe Illustrateds, but the cost/illustration ratio has become off-putting. The early ones were priced at $250-$300 and I purchased "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "Gilgamesh" in that range, but recent ones have been priced at $375-$400. Fortunately, most of the early ones are still available, and I might buy Poe one of these days.

War of the Worlds was fun to read again. Both had great illustrations. Poe is also good, as was Christmas Carol. Perhaps it would be useful to do this now that they comprise a fairly large subset of the DLEs. I'm not sure whether Tarzan represents the first member of the subset or not; it seems to meet all the criteria except that its limitation is 800 instead of 1200.

There are currently 64 DLEs available, whereas 4 months ago there were 72, and 13 of the 64 are on the Limited Quantities list. I’m not sure what it means, if anything.

Only four releases so far this year. So we are due another announcement shortly. I believe they are deciding to "not print" part of the run on some titles due to lack of sales. I may be totally wrong, but some of the titles that are limited quantity haven't made sense. Example, Green Willow with 1200 copies and only printed 16 months ago, I don't think so, the run has been shortened. December 22nd, 83 copies avail, today 31 avail. Four months 50 copies have sold, meaning over 1100 copies sold the first 12 months, not likely.

This is a smart move for then in actuality. If a product isn't selling, discontinue production. If for some reason it becomes "hot" at some future point, they can always print the remaining copies.

I think you’re right, and the uncertainty places a cap on secondary market prices. That’s good if you’re a buyer but not if you’re a seller.

Wootle, I think you have a typo on the sold out date on #111, An Impartial History. I believe the sold out date should be 6/28 not 9/28. Minor issue.

As jroger pointed out, you can also note Life on the Mississippi as sold out.

As a collector of only DLEs, no objection.

I wouldn't have guessed those to be DLEs. DE's maybe, on account of the slipcases. I'm guessing neither are particularly heavy on the illustrations, either, no?

Moving to the top.

I added all 145 thumbs at the top of post 1, as well as the 50 at the top of post 2 and the 45 at the top of post 3. I personally think the 145 at the top is to much. What does everyone else think?

“The Soldier in Our Civil War” has been on EP’s DLE page for years, but it’s description makes no mention of a limitation. I asked Customer Service about it and received this reply:

“I have searched that set, both on line and in my system, and have found nothing that says it is a ‘limited edition’.”

Same situation as "The War for the Union".

Glad you bumped this thread up. I was having to do a google search every day I needed to do an update it had fallen so far down the list.

I count 15 of the 50 DLEs still for sale to be on the Limited Quantities list. This includes 2 of the 15 in the Signed-by-the-Illustrator series and 13 of the other 35. I have no idea what any of this means, but I was bored tonight.

With only 1 new DLE this year, they are finally slowing them down, which I think is good, or, we are about to get a half dozen announced in a weeks time. I don't know which is more likely.

Then perhaps we will see a SF/F series at some point. I know there is a lot of interest here for one.

And I wouldn’t mind seeing a revival of the American History series, although I don’t have any more shelf space.

I've added an overlooked DLE at #66. Eight volume set of Lincoln writings. I probably don't have the date exact, as there was nothing here on LT to pull information from. Anyone that bought this, could fill me in perhaps.

Early last week the DLE page showed 43 titles, but today it shows only 42. I haven't figured out what was removed. Does anyone know?

A quick count finds 58 on my shelves including all 24 of the signed-by-the-illustrator series. There really aren’t any others I want, but occasionally a new one pops up that interests me (e.g., Davy Crockett, Roughing It).

Unfortunately I have found 4 other titles I need to add to the list while building the DB. Don't know when the time will be available however.

I have 26 DLs, I have just collected the ones I really want....when a new DL comes out and I'm interested, I go ahead and buy it :)

Of the signed illustrated DLE I have 19 so far, trying to collect them all but I'm very patient and will not pay a fortune for overprized ones on the second market...….3 of the ones I'm missing are out of print, and 3 are still on EPs site which I will probably buy ones they reach limited quantity.

Appears that EP is doing some website clean up. A lot of the early DLE used to have their page still available, now most have been taken down. I'll leave the links for a bit to see if they re-appear.

I feel you when comes to the wife. Currently I am at 119 of the DLEs available. I am eventually going to get some of the older ones when I can afford them :). She does not understand my slight obsession either.

Many of them I took a pass on; the bibles and many of the artist editions. I am mainly interested in the reproductions of older books.

I'd like to ask something about The Tain Bo Cuailnge and am trying here for lack of a response in its own thread:

There was a complaint about the quality of the illustrations (too dark and muddied so details visible in the illustrations online are lost). How do others see this?

And how does the book / translation read?

Any help would be appreciated. I find the book appealing, but it is expensive and a hassle to get internationally, so I'd like to get some feedback before I decide about a purchase.

While it is true that there is some loss of detail from the web page illustrations to the book, I do not find it disconcertingly so. The problem, I think, is that most of the illustrations are night or sunset scenes, but even so, except in one or two instances, the faces are sufficiently illuminated by the moon or other light that the detail is clear enough for my taste.

The translation is a modern one from a Penguin edition, but reads like a very literal one. While I don’t have another translation to compare it with, I find some of the language peculiar: “you shouldn’t heed what messengers say when they’ve a feed of your meat and drink in them.” This seems like a strange way of expressing the idea (or maybe it’s just because I’m American). On the positive side, the translator has provided a lot of helpful notes regarding historical/mythological places, individuals, and events.

Overall, I like the book and consider it to be a worthy addition to the signed-by-the-illustrator series.

I’ll post this same message in the Tain Bo Cuailnge thread where it really belongs.

Have you noticed that their DLE page now makes a distinction between the true limited editions and those that are merely “deluxe” without the limitations?

That is true. My experience is mostly with DLEs that are being re-released in order to complete their limitation. Others have noted that new publications seem to cost more than similar ones from a few years ago, but comparisons are hard to make objectively.

Adjusting prices for inflation is a necessary business practice as long as it doesn’t cause customers to purchase fewer books.

I know that nobody can know for sure with Easton Press, but you might have an idea and it can't hurt to ask. How would people here estimate the likelihood of Jason and the Argonauts coming back into stock? I originally didn't buy it since I already had an older EP edition, but in the meantime I've got five books from the series of older texts in these Deluxe Editions (I started with Gilgamesh and recently got The Kalevala) and would like to complete the set.

I actually did contact Easton Press recently when a used copy of Jason and the Argonauts was offered online. They told me that it's completely sold out. I'm still waiting for the used copy, but hope that will work out.
