recently found a real typewriter written page which must have come from my mother's or grandmother's belongings, which I have been sorting. I think you might enjoy:

JACK'S MISTAKE

A young man engaged to a young lady wishing to buy her something for a Valentines remembrance and not being able to decide for himself went shopping with his sister. The sister purchased a pair of step-ins for herself and the young man bought a pair of gloves for his lady friend. In sending the parcels they became exchanged by mistake, and instead of the gloves being sent to the young lady the step-ins arrived accompanied by the following note from Jack: Dear Jeannie: I hope you will accept this token instead of a foolish Valentine. Oh, how I wish that no other hand but mine would touch them after you have put them on, but I know Dearest that such a wish is in vain. A thousand young fellows may touch them while I am away and other eyes than mine may see them on you. I bought the smallest size that I could get and if they are too large let them wrinkle down a litte. Always wear them when we are together as I want to see how they fit. Sister says that she has to clean hers every month as so many fellows have soiled hands. But you can keep them clean with benzine but keep them on until they dry. I hope they are not too small so be sure not to wet them, blow in them before you put them on. With love, Jack"

a nice little chuckle for the literary among us

Wow, I had forgotten all about that. I remember this going around when I was in about the seventh or eighth grade (in Texas). One of our teachers found a copy of it that we were circulating, and hit the roof! A group of us got called in and questioned about it and warned that this would "go on our permanent record"! (Oh, the shame!) So I guess I was already branded a social deviant in junior high! I showed it to my mother and grandmother and they said yes, they remembered it from their school days and they didn't see what the fuss was all about. So it's been around at least from the turn of the century. Wonder where it originated.

Step-ins ???

I am reading Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman and that term shows up there - is a fiction account of the Scottsboro incident in the 30's. I had never heard this term before.
