Visiting LA last week, I was served a delicious pungent cheddar. Imagine my surprise when I learned it was from Costco sold by the name "Coastal". It was roughly $6 per pound! Am I the last to find out about this cheese?

I wish I had a Costco nearby to investigate.

>1 stellarexplorer: I'm three years late to answer this one, but I've been buying cheese at Costco for eight years now and I have no memory of ever seeing anything called "Coastal" there. Maybe it was just in the regional CA Costco stores. There are a ton of New England cheeses in the Costco stores I frequent. (Specifically Cabot's, which I'm pretty sure has gone national as a brand anyway.)

Good to know. Nah, it was just last summer. The sad part is that no one has heard of this cheese to offer guidance. :(
Oh well, there are other cheeses out there!

Is this it? (When in doubt the vast underbelly of the interwebs is your friend.)

heinäkuu 22, 2018, 4:45pm

That sure looks like it! Thanks. Try it if you see it

I do have an iGourmet gift card to use, but I find myself almost always leaning towards gooey cheeses, for some weird reason.

heinäkuu 23, 2018, 11:34am

Yeah, this would be if there still room and budget for something surprising and cheap...

They do run specials:

Sometimes the cheeses are as much as 33% or more off the regular price. You can find gourmet cheeses at very decent prices at Trader Joe's, BTW. And they come in normal sized portions. At Costco they're ginormous.

Stellar!!!! Look at what I spotted at Trader Joe's today!

No, I did not buy it. I am only halfway through a two pound block of herbed cheddar I purchased a month or so ago.

heinäkuu 24, 2018, 9:26pm

Wow! I cannot be positive that that is exactly the same cheese. But I would buy it. Maybe I will check out the local TJ’s which is unfortunately not as conveniently located as I would wish, to see if they carry it. Thank you!

I wonder where it's made? It's not a UK brand I know. Moderately expensive - UK cheese is £7/kg, which is about $4.50/lb if I've done my maths right, although it varies considerably with artisan cheeses being 3x as much.

>11 stellarexplorer: It's English, not from CA. But perhaps Coastal is a style and not just a name.

>12 reading_fox: How big is the Dorset Coast? That's where it says it's from.

>13 clamairy: That's exactly what I was wondering. is it a style?

Muokkaaja: heinäkuu 25, 2018, 8:48pm

It appears to be a style. I found this description:

"This style of cheddar has usually been aged around 12-15 months and has had time to develop calcium crystals. This gives the cheese a sweeter, crunchier, hazelnut flavor...*"

The Ford Farm exports one of the best known varieties.

Good research! Aren’t you curious, a little?

heinäkuu 26, 2018, 7:19am

I'm a lot curious. 😂 But it can wait a bit.

heinäkuu 26, 2018, 11:03am

Ford farm certainly rings a bell, and a google check shows they also make the Wookey hole cave aged cheddar which I do know. I wouldn't call it a style myself, but then I wasn't really aware there were sub-styles of cheddar, other than various age statements. It's about an hour's drive from my parents. Which is practically next door in US terms, but sufficiently far in the UK that I've never been.

I will be on the lookout for a coastal cheddar, and will report back. I trust all herein concerned will do the same! At some point.

You guys are so analytical. I just thought it came from cows that lived by the sea. :)
