Does anyone have any particular publishers or imprints they particularly enjoy/recommend for bringing academic work to a general,well-educated audience? I'm thinking along the lines of Basic Books or University of Nebraska Press's Bison Books imprint. Thoughts?

Reaktion has an 'Earth' series dealing with matters geographical/geological/meteorological that fits your bill. I've a fair few books in it and all are good ones. The books in their 'Objekt' series that I've read suit as well.

Berghahn & the sadly defunct Berg are academic books & journals written I feel sure for academics but I think very highly of them--despite not being a scholar and having no academic background in the subjects of the many of them I've read I've found them consistently interesting. Perhaps they're 'academic works suited to the educated reader with an undiscriminating curiosity about the soft sciences'.

Uni of Neb. has some good books, all right; I hit their sales once or twice back in the day when exchange rates were wildly favourable for Europeans.

Merci! I'm acquainted with Berghahn -- they were in the booth next to mine at the last conference I exhibited at. I found their books to be as you described -- more solidly academic, rather than written for a lay audience.

I like early production by Caxton Publishers from Caldwell ID. Their focus is non fiction west for a large part of their production but the writers for the most part are pretty good. I can't recall reading anything after the 1950's but then I like off the wall history stuff.

I like the Very Short Introductions from Oxford University Press.
