Hi, I am a teen (YA) librarian in Texas. I am planning an altered book craft during our Summer Reading Program. I am seeking 8 to 12 large old books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias or textbooks. If the books are worn and in rough shape, that is fine, even preferable. I desire these old books because of their sewn bindings and pages with high cotton content. I have seen a thread that some librarians don't know what to do with these old books that no one else wants. My solution for you is that our teens will turn them into works of art. If you are unfamiliar with altered books, I am using http://gomakesomething.com/ht/thebasics/altered-book/ for guidance. I will pay book rate shipping.

When do you need these? I ask because I can't let go of my old Britannica or my Webster's, but there's a big book sale at the Newberry Library here at the end of July, and they often have such books. If that's not too far off, I'll look there for you. I'll also check the free book box at my favorite used book store next time I go by there.

I love altered books!

ETA: Just realized I have an old atlas. It's kind of big, but I think I could bubble wrap/kraft paper wrap it. If that would work for you, let me know! (I was going to take it to a charity book sale, but it's so big, it didn't fit in the bags of books I took and so I forgot it!)

Thank you for your offer. An atlas may be too large. The craft is in mid-July. Please keep your eyes peeled if anything else comes up. Thanks again! :-)

Do you have Goodwill thrift stores where you live? If so, they have Goodwill Clearance Centers in larger cities where you can dig through giant bins of books and pay by weight: like 5 cents per pound or something ridiculously cheap.
