Which book should he rather not have penned down?

I,for a fact barely made it through "Youth",it was painfully slow and well,a real drag.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have written it, but I agree with you on Youth. Same goes for Boyhood, and I didn't really get Dusklands and thought it was very different from the rest of his work (not in a good way). Other than that, I like all his other works (although some are better than others of course).

I had a lot of trouble with Elizabeth Costello. I'd just read Slowman and was excited to move on to this next one and was largely disappointed.

I have to second Elizabeth Costello. I thought Diary of a Bad Year did a much better job of mixing essays with fiction, mainly because the narrative of DoaBY worked to undercut some of the "preachy" nature of those essays, while Elizabeth Costello came across as purely didactic a lot of the time. I was especially disappointed since what had initially drawn me to Coetzee was the subtlety and ambivalence that was present in Disgrace, and was almost completely absent from Elizabeth Costello.

Strangely, I enjoyed Elizabeth Costello his best work (amongst the ones I've read).
I was disappointed by Youth when I read it years ago.
