It seems I am always apologizing for being absent at this group that I started. I do stop in almost every day. I was wondering how many of you have a page at Facebook or would be willing to sign up for a Facebook account? Simply put, I'd love to see photographs of you! And see what music you are listening to, and etc.! LT will always be a part of my networking, but I also enjoy some of the applications available at Facebook. It's just a thought...no pressure. :-)

I joined Facebook in July 2007. Its been a very nice surprise for me to find how many of my co-workers also have pages and even nicer to re-connect with long lost college friends.

Plus, there's the terribly addictive Scrabulous :)

Anyway, I can be found at:

My friend's ex-girlfriend's brother created facebook.

Anyway, my profile:

I have tried to become a Facebook member, but to no avail. My son, the comupter expert says it's because my computer is outdated. I would like to be on facebook even tho my grand-daughter says "Gramma's trying to get on facelift. LOL" Maybe Santa will bring me a more up-to date computer.

i'm underwhelmed by all of what goes on out there in the tech world, i'm just now getting into YouTube like i got into MTV when it was just music.

YouTube is conceptually over my head. I know people who spend hours - hours!!! - on YouTube every day just watching videos, following links, watching more. I just can't do it. I'll watch if someone I know posts something, or if somebody sends me a link, but... I think I'm the only person in my generation who doesn't "get" YouTube.

I must admit, I love the facebook (almost as much as I love LibraryThing).

My profile can be located at:
http://umichigan.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2204577

I recently discovered the LibraryThing.com group... I think everyone here should join!
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2209920952

And now there is a My LibraryThing application! I wish that it included bookcovers, though.

One of the options on your LT profile page is to add other social networking memberships in the "also on" section. This allows people to link directly from your profile to other networks. Check my profile, look at the "also on" section just before the messages. select Facebook and go to my Facebook page.

Thanks Gene, I'll have to look into that. Is it simple? Because if it ain't I'm in trouble. (smiles) How are you BTW?

10geneg
joulukuu 4, 2007, 3:03 pm

It's very simple. In the also on section just enter the name of the product (Facebook, flickr, etc.) and your handle. This is the name you are known by by the product. Essentially what this seems to do is create the html required to open the product (in this case, facebook) at your home page.

Scrabulous link?

12tygerlilli
Muokkaaja: joulukuu 14, 2007, 10:48 am

Here's the main link for Scrabulous:

http://www.scrabulous.com

To play Scrabulous on Facebook, you need to add the Scrabulous application to your Facebook profile. And then you just play and play and play! :)

Dear ambushedbyasnail,

Utube, in the context of LT can be useful.
In another post on this group I talked about "emotional Music".
An energetic member - Rdurick - assembled examples from Utube to
illustrate/give examples of some of the music we were talking about.
Seeing a film clip added to the emotion. eg.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4ZyuULy9zs

Thus I occassionally trawl thru Utube looking for examples to better make a point.

But, Facebook I don't get. :-)

Well yes, obviously, in some contexts YouTube can be useful.

The thing I don't "get" about YouTube is when I go to someone's house, and they say "Think of a word," and I say "Armadillo" and we spend the next half hour watching videos of armadillos before it's their turn to think of a word. And we do this for hours and it's supposed to be entertainment, because this is how they entertain themselves when they're alone.

Apparently it's just me, but spending four hours watching useless video clips is not fun, alone or with anyone else.

15HelloAnnie
helmikuu 22, 2008, 10:45 am

I like You Tube okay. I can't imagine spending hours on there. I will check it out if someone sends me a link or tells me about a certain video. That's about the extent of it.

Regarding Facebook, I'm on Myspace and have thought about joining Facebook, but I really only want to keep up with one! How does Facebook differ from Myspace? Is it worth it to join if I'm already on Myspace? My husband does both.

16Grammath
helmikuu 22, 2008, 12:05 pm

I mainly use MySpace to indulge my other hobby, discovering obscure new bands - I'm off out to a bar in Shoreditch to see one of them play this evening.

I do the genuine social stuff (and play lots of Scrabulous!) on Facebook.

Facebook also has an application with an LT feed so your profile will show your recent additions.

17ambushedbyasnail
helmikuu 22, 2008, 4:29 pm

I definitely prefer Facebook to MySpace. It feels more organized, easier to navigate... plus more people I know are on Facebook. The only reason I use MySpace at all is because my little brother doesn't have a Facebook account.

I joined Facebook at long last. Definitely better than MySpace, which was way too frenetic with advertising! My Facebook profile is at: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1150419166

Muokkaaja: maaliskuu 10, 2008, 2:01 am

I've had facebook forever, but i didn't realize there were bookmooch or LT applications :) i'm happy now!

I think the best part about YouTube is that you can watch funny clips from your favorite tv shows or movies, its just fun to watch funny moments rather than whole long things. thats what i use it for anyway.

This is the link to my profile:

One of the things I like about Facebook is the ability to show people what I am listening to by using the LAST FM application. If you come to my profile, click on my name "theresawilliams" at the end of the song list, and it should take you to the LAST FM site, and the site will tell you how to put your listening pleasures on your Facebook profile.

Is there a place here in the group where we can share blogs and writing, etc?

24TheresaWilliams

I'm not sure about here at LT, but I know that at Facebook you can import your blog entries to your Facebook profile. I do this at Facebook.

25teelgee
maaliskuu 13, 2008, 11:37 am

Theresa, I meant specifically in this group, are we sharing writing and/or blogs with each other here?

Hey Theresa,

Long time, no talk. I've been on facebook for quite a while, so let's be "facebook friends."

I can't seem to join Facebook. The site tells me that my browser (firefox) doesn't have Java enabled. The problem is that I do have Java enabled. I could use another browser but I don't like having two of them up at once.

31TheresaWilliams
toukokuu 16, 2008, 2:44 pm

Oh shoot, xenchu. Maybe it's a glitch or something...maybe try again later? It'd be great if you could join.

32dancingstarfish
toukokuu 17, 2008, 1:09 am

odd xenchu, I use firefox and facebook all the time. I don't know why it wouldn't work for you =( go to firefox help and see if they have anything on it?

33TheresaWilliams
toukokuu 17, 2008, 12:56 pm

I've so far got 7 library thing friends at Facebook. I sure would like to add to that!

34xenchu
toukokuu 17, 2008, 4:54 pm

#32 The difference might be that I am using Mac (a new one, I might add).

If I used Mac's browser, Safari, it would probably work. This is not the first website where I have run into this problem, the site telling me I don't have Java enabled. I suspect either Mac or Firefox will have to fix it.

margad, LOL, Yes, let's do play another game: it'll probably be my last before Provincetown! xxxoxo

I just don't get Facebook. I don't think I know how to use it. I don't understand the point of most of their gadgets and have a hard time just keeping up with all the hatching eggs and flying flowers. I really like LT, Facebook I just don't understand.

38TheresaWilliams
toukokuu 20, 2008, 4:36 pm

Gene, you are so funny. :-D

I've been on Facebook less than a year. I find it useful because so much of my life revolves around a university life: students, colleagues, and former classmates. FB is a handy way to keep up with a lot of people and to connect with people with similar interests.

I go to FB every day and click on "home." That shows me at a glance who has changed their "status," who has added an application, who has joined a group, etc. The repetition of names/faces helps me because I deal with so many people each year.

FB also makes it handier for my students to contact me. You don't have to remember an e-mail address: you just click on a picture and, voila, you can send a message. It also makes it easier for me to network with editors and writers. It's a one-stop place for networking.

I like it because my students can get to know another side of me on my FB profile. I have photos of friends, family, and students on my profile. I have videos of students I have made in some of my classes. I can also get to know my students better this way. It's a great tool, for instance, for approaching very shy students.

You can start your own groups on Facebook, too.

I have an app. called circle of friends. So I can create groups of people with similar traits or interests. So I have a group for students, a group for colleagues, and a group for LTers. I can send a message to multiple people at the same time by using this feature.

The gadgets are addictive and that's why FB has them. But it's also kind of cool to send someone a virtual birthday cake or give a virtual hug when you can't give one in person. I've gotten to know my colleagues who are on FB better than I would have normally: I can see their song preferences, I can make a sketch and send it to them, I can send them a poem, I can tell them happy birthday (FB keeps up with birthdays!).

FB also has live chat. Or you can turn that feature off.

I guess it works for some better than others, all according to one's needs.

Hello Gene, you and I seem to share sentiments. I've only been on Facebook a few days though. Besides posting a few pictures, about all I've done so far is seen who's written on my wall. Incidentally, Theresa is the only one who writes on my wall, though you and several other LibraryThingers have joined my Facebook, and I've enjoyed several exchanges now.

I also check both daily. I'm of course more partial to LibraryThing, even though I didn't find this Art is Life group for months, and have only been in here a few weeks, I suppose. I've now pulled out of the other groups because not much was happening there.

Theresa, you will be missed sorely. But we're vicariously enjoying what your are about to enter. We trust that we'll get a full report when you return. Try to capture some of Motherwell's residual spirit while you're in that town! He and Rothko were as close as those temperaments would allow--real soul mates.

#39: Thanks so much, DM. I plan to soak it all in and get some serious writing done!

Maybe we can find a way to make FB relevant to us. There are lots of people on FB that aren't on LT.

And one of the best things about FB is the ability to share photos and videos. Remember that!

41ambushedbyasnail
toukokuu 21, 2008, 12:10 pm

Gene, you're right about the hatching eggs - the "applications" feature is a new Facebook development and frankly not a very good one. I just press ignore. Ignore, ignore, ignore. I do not need virtual eggs, flowers, bong hits.

Don't let yourself get lured into adding every application! The applications are, for the most part, pretty dumb. Although there are a few gems - Catbook is my personal favorite.

42TheresaWilliams
toukokuu 21, 2008, 4:33 pm

Actually I love the hatching eggs. :-)

43geneg
toukokuu 21, 2008, 4:49 pm

If I could customize the eggs, birds, bong hits, etc. with personal messages, I might see them differently, but I don't know how, if it's possible and with all the time I spend on LT I really can't do a lot of exploring and tinkering elsewhere.

44TheresaWilliams
toukokuu 21, 2008, 4:57 pm

The applications allow you to attach a message to the egg or flower or whatever. It's a lot to soak in. I've been fooling with it for a few months now and I barely know anything. But I do like having a fairly detailed profile of myself for people to explore, and I enjoy exploring others' profiles.

45margad
Muokkaaja: toukokuu 21, 2008, 5:49 pm

Gene, you might enjoy Eons, which is a Facebook-like site specifically for baby boomers. In some ways, I find it's easier to be more interactive with Eons. Also, the typeface is bigger and easier to read for us nearsighted bookish types! I still like LibraryThing the best, though, for philosophically meaningful conversation.

If you're interested, Eons is at www.eons.com. My Eons tag is WorldSoWide.
