This is new to me

I like the slipcase a lot. It's an important work, should have a decent audience. Limited to 1943 copies (the year of publication of the novel)

Not sure how many illustrations -- I see two in my email though.

This looks like the same one that has been for sale for a couple years now?

>2 Arknight:

Perhaps it is. If so, I just never noticed it before.

>2 Arknight: Yep, this isn't a new one. Been around for at least a couple of years probably due to the high limitation. I had thought about purchasing this a while back but decided I would just hang on to my matching blue copy.

>1 sdawson: Nice, but it has been available for quite awhile as a DLE. I have the beautiful 2 volume blue edition by EP with a page count of 1,168! Same size with 2 gorgeous commissioned color front pieces. So I do not know how they crammed so much into 760 pages.

Here is a screen shot from December 2014 where it is already available:

By the way, I've been meaning to make a post that I often use Archive.org's Wayback Machine to look up original prices on EP books. It's a bit finicky, but you can find some good information sometimes.

Thanks all. I have the 1 volume blue EP version, and the matching 2 volume edition of 'Atlas Shrugged', plus a one volume red leather 'We the Living'.

I wish EP would put out the slim Anthem novel, as it really is a nice work for introducing Ayn Rand's ideas to folks without the 800+ page commitment.

They have a blue We the Living/Anthem volume and also a matching Virtue of Selfishness volume that was a Reader's choice. I've never seen a red We the Living.

>9 Eastoner: thanks Eastoner.

I'll have to find the EP version of Anthem to add to my library then. I'll see if I can post some photos of what I have later today (or this week at least)

Yes there is a matching blue "We the Living/Anthem" reflecting the horrific dark years of her living in totalitarian Russia. I found it depressing and sold it but kept Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged in this set, which I love. You can get this book for as low as $80 on eBay if you want.

I've gotten in the habit of saving the glossy volume-specific brochures for that reason.

>12 treereader: I don't receive as many of those brochures as I used to. Possibly the mailman is mad at me for having to drag all of my books up to the porch. lol He's a great guy, and we do give him $100 at Christmas to thank him for all his work. I did hear that the area and route we are on is highly sought after at the PO, but no one wants me because of all the books.

>10 sdawson: That would be great. Here's a photo of my Ayn Rand EP Collection:

>12 treereader: Yep, same here! I've got a drawer full of them now :)

As far as I know, there isn't a two-volume "Fountainhead" that matches this set. There is a two-volume blue leather "Fountainhead" but it is a bit different on the spine.

>14 Eastoner:

I didn't even realize these other Ayn Rand books existed!

16Eastoner
marraskuu 15, 2016, 9:29 am

>15 mortalalliance: Yep, they aren't very common. I believe "We the Living/Anthem" was only sold as a set labeled as "The Novels of Ayn Rand" that came with the two-volume Atlas Shrugged and the single volume Fountainhead. The Virtue of Selfishness was a part of the non-fiction Reader's Choice series in 2007.

I took a few photos of mine last night. I was mistaken about the 'red leather'. I have a red-leather photo next to my LT entry for We The Living, but upon looking at the photo closer, I believe that is Yvgeny Zamiatan's We, another great dystopian novel to come out of the Russian revolution by a dissident who experienced first hand what a totalitarian government can lead to.

The Fountainhead was part of the Great Books of the 20th Century I believe, so I did not duplicate that one when purchasing the others. The front covers are similar, but do not match, neither do the spines.

While I believe that Ayn Rand's philosophy about the importance of the individual over the collective is vital, I do not agree with all of her conclusions by any means. Thus I do recall now that I passed on The Virtue of Selfishness and just kept her novels rather than her essays.

19sdawson
marraskuu 15, 2016, 3:13 pm

>18 Eastoner: Yes, as I have it in an old hardback, and have not read 'We the Living' , I did not realize the novella was included with it. I learned a bit this week.

>1 sdawson: There is a 2 volume near matching RED Fountainhead which is 760 pages which came with the 2 volume BLUE Atlas Shrugged: the date is 1989. It has 2 nice color frontispieces and about a half dozen tasteful black and white illustrations. For pictures here is the item number on eBay: 122227120595

I stand corrected on my previous post in >5 HugoDumas: above. That was the page count on Atlas Shrugged. Thus as a single volume DLE this works.

>20 HugoDumas: Thank you.

May as well add the photo of those to this thread for comparison purposes:

FWIW: When browsing eBay, I noticed the vultures are out there for this title. There are a seven different listings for the slipcased limited edition, asking between $199 and a whopping $325 for a set that can still be bought new from EP for $156 today.

It looks like there were two distinct styles for the spine: one with the author's name up and one with the author's name down.
...
I'd upload a picture but frankly, I'm exhausted just looking at the hoops LT wants one to jump through to upload pictures. Instead, I'll just describe it in words: I have matching two-volume sets of Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead in blue (author up) and the other two works in blue (author down).

23sdawson
marraskuu 15, 2016, 8:37 pm

>22 treereader: I use 'Flickr', it's very easy. After uploading to Flickr, if one clicks on an image, there is a 'share' icon. That brings you to a page where it presents the 'embed' code. I just cut-n-paste from there to here. After doing it a few times to figure it out, it only takes a minute to share a photo that way.

Agreed LT is great at cataloging, but it is not the place to store and share photographs.

24treereader
marraskuu 15, 2016, 9:52 pm

I guess I object to having to create yet another account somewhere just to upload pictures. Sure, I could upload something to LT directly but if I uploaded one picture of some books to a library cataloging website, I would subsequently be compelled to photograph and upload my entire library. Who has that kind of time?

Besides, if I left just this one picture in my LT account, it would skew everyone's perception of my library and interests and completely overlook how I conquered a serious bout of OCD that should have had me uploading photos of my entire library for several months. haha!

But seriously, all I wanted to add was that they did in fact make at least one type of two-volume blue set of the Fountainhead that matches other volumes in Rand's catalog. It looks just like the red set in 21, except that they're blue.

I purchased the last book of “The Fountainhead” but am wondering from those of you who have purchased it, what you think about this DLE, not very costly but can you tell me your thoughts on this selection, worth the purchase? Not sure if I should return it for a different DLE?

26Arknight

>25 jazlaumir:
I purchased it a few years ago. I really like it and it matches well with the slipcase edition EP published of Atlas Shrugged.

Thank you, for your feedback , I look forward to reading it, I hadn’t seen a lot of reviews on it on this site, so I wasn’t sure. Maybe, one day I’ll get lucky to catch the Atlas Shrugged DLE at a good price.

27: "Maybe, one day I’ll get lucky to catch the Atlas Shrugged DLE at a good price."

Maybe one day, people will spontaneously turn into cats :)
Which do you think is more likely. Yeah, I'd like to get a copy of Atlas Shrugged at a good price too. Looked for years, don't think it will happen...

toukokuu 10, 2018, 11:16 pm

LOL ok thanks for level setting me on that one, oh well, guess I’ll let that one go

30treereader
toukokuu 10, 2018, 11:45 pm

Don't forget there is a two-volume EP Atlas Shrugged out there, which also goes with a two-volume Fountainhead and two other books, which can build a matched six-volume set...if you need that much Rand.

31jazlaumir
toukokuu 11, 2018, 1:40 am

Ok thanks, I have ordered “The Fountainhead” DLE and was hoping to match that with the Atlas Schrugged DLE but understand that to be an unrealistic pricing expectation, not willing to go way over original cost , so that’s out. If I reconsider, I may go for the two volume EP .
