Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors:
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post:
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page:
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

It's really unnecessary to post long lists of spam profiles like this. They disappear almost immediately.

If people want to let others know which cities they've worked on, just post that.

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 10, 2016, 10:09 am

>38 lilithcat: I've noticed some of these seem to require more than one flag.
(ETA: At some point I'll go back and check if there are any "survivors" from the last thread. I did notice some of the profiles I flagged and posted got found again and re-posted by others, having failed to go away. So, this all serves a utilitarian purpose.) (ETA: Checked posts 1-95, found a few stragglers, but was able to get them all myself. To be continued... ETA up to 129)

(ETA: Not to mention it provides a documentary answer to the question, "What the hell? Why are thousands of members disappearing all of a sudden?!" And the snark helps break the tedium.)

syyskuu 10, 2016, 9:20 am

Maybe do them in a separate thread?

syyskuu 10, 2016, 9:29 am

>39 davidgn:

it provides a documentary answer to the question, "What the hell? Why are thousands of members disappearing all of a sudden?!"

Unlike the folks mentioned in this thread, I doubt very much that anyone notices they are gone (much less misses them)! ;-)

syyskuu 10, 2016, 10:39 am

>39 davidgn: (and others) I do think it would be better to have a separate thread. We don't have anything like the spam problem we did for a while, and the solution provided seems to be very rare in the false positives (I do check for them, now and then). The profile hunting seems well and good, but you seem to be catching a few that may not deserve to be in your nets of doom (>20 davidgn: provides an example), in any case.

Perhaps start a new thread called Spam profile reporting, with suggestions similar to spam fighters at the top, but providing your techniques for searching them out, and your methodology for differentiating between profiles with no library, and profiles with links and "books" meant to be spam.

I'd rather leave this thread for those things that need action right away, rather than housecleaning (nothing wrong with housecleaning, but I'd prefer to have the Spam fighters thread be about a call to arms, so to speak).

I wonder if you've made the attempt to undo the flags on the account mentioned in >20 davidgn: (since he's a legit author, no matter what you think of the book).

It's still for sale on Amazon, and still has sales (not my kind of book, but the thing is, the profile probably should be unflagged, or unremoved, or whatever nomenclature you'd like).

syyskuu 10, 2016, 10:40 am

All right, then. New thread.

syyskuu 10, 2016, 10:41 am

>43 Lyndatrue: here here

syyskuu 10, 2016, 10:47 am

Unfortunately, there is no way for members to unflag or counterflag a profile. Staff had to do that. All the more reason to be careful not to flag legit profiles.

syyskuu 10, 2016, 11:04 am

>46 lilithcat: What I should have said was that I hoped they would report their error to staff, for eventual repair. I've done that a couple of times, notably on a recent rescue from the spam folder that was too late. I doubt that the owner of the profile mentioned in >20 davidgn: will ever even know it was disabled, but I prefer erring on the side of caution (which is why I try not to post anything before coffee).

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 10, 2016, 12:55 pm

>47 Lyndatrue: Best to let Taphophile handle that one. Though if it's not done in 24 hours, I'll do it myself.

ETA: I've fleshed out the documentation on the top post for the Great Spam Profile Hunt thread. Any further suggestions from anyone?

syyskuu 10, 2016, 1:22 pm

>48 davidgn: I think your documentation is excellent. Go forth and clean. :-}

>112 MarthaJeanne: I'm sorry, but I don't understand

syyskuu 19, 2016, 6:23 am

You copied the whole message including the email address given. I assume the spammer wants people to email her, so I deleted that part of the message when I reproduced it.

On the other hand, spammers sometimes go through websites trying to harvest email addresses, so giving them this one might be serving her right.

>125 2wonderY: Just pointing out that that message is in Hobnob, so it also should not be flagged.

For the record, the profile is Obviously also not to be flagged.

syyskuu 20, 2016, 3:33 pm

>126 MarthaJeanne: That's right, but I'm guessing the Spam algorithm weighed in heavily because it was a first post in a new topic. Besides, I pointed out to the new member that the group guidelines ask that this type of post be put into an existing topic.

His 13 cataloged entries were flagged away as spam, and now just his account needs similar dispatching.

syyskuu 23, 2016, 5:19 pm

>145 rybie2:

I don't see anything about his profile that's a problem. Why do you think he's a spammer?

syyskuu 23, 2016, 5:29 pm

>146 lilithcat: It probably has to do with his "works" except that I don't really see any difference between those, and other "authors" with similar bent. All 13 items have been identified as spam works, though. I dunno. For someone who can't even be bothered to make a proper entry for his own books (title contains author, and there are no authors in the author field).

I just don't know. I'll have to think about flagging, but it won't take many active spam fighters before the account's suspended. I think 3 flags often work the magic, and we already know that rybie2 has flagged.

On the other hand, not sure of the guy's purpose, since he just seems to add a book or two, and then vanish into other lands. Strange.

syyskuu 23, 2016, 6:06 pm

>146 lilithcat: >147 Lyndatrue: His spam "works" are titles of his blog articles, and those and his LT account exist to drum up business for himself, none of it literary-minded.

syyskuu 23, 2016, 6:22 pm

Since when do authors have to write "literary" works? And pretty much every author's account here exists to drum up business.

I'll need better reasons to flag the account.

syyskuu 23, 2016, 6:40 pm

I swear someone declared a crusade and have been overzealous with regard to some of these things. I wish I had seen these works. I'd have voted no.

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 23, 2016, 6:58 pm

I saw the works. I voted no. I was not aware that they referred to blog posts (was that 100% confirmed?), but even if so, it's very shaky territory to flag works that refer to actual works, however sketchy.

syyskuu 23, 2016, 9:10 pm

>151 davidgn: You can do what I did first, which was to Google the name of the member in question, then go to his web site where he has all the posts/advertisements/blog pages/whatever anyone wants to call them as part of his site which is advertising his financial services.

It's my opinion that none of the descriptors above were "works" in any sense, the same as a spammer who joins and adds a "work" for So-And-So Septic Service is not a work but is an oblique advertisement. That's why I flagged and voted "yes" on them; they aren't actual works. It's probably also why others voted similarly and why those 13 titles are now suppressed. And since the member in question had cataloged no books, only titles of his his web site content touting why his services are necessary, I thought it clear he was a spammer, and I'm not the only one who voted that way.

I really don't know what else to say or explain on the subject, and my energies are kaput. I collegially suggest that those who think a great wrong-doing has been done by me and other voting members, all is not lost because you can always take it up with staff.

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 23, 2016, 9:31 pm

I understand your reasoning, and I actually agree with you that his behavior was spammish, particularly given what you point out. My point, though, is that this case is very close to the line. I won't say you were wrong. If it was a mistake, it was an understandable one, and with further investigation, I might even be convinced to join your position. I will say, however, that personally, I would rather err on the side of caution and give things the benefit of the doubt.

Muokkaaja: syyskuu 24, 2016, 1:49 am

>161 rybie2: What distinguishes edge cases like the one last night from the cases I just flagged is a simple heuristic question that I ask myself whenever I work-flag: "Does a work by that name (and author, if applicable) exist?" If you can determine to a reasonable degree of certainty that no such work exists, there's no question: flag away. If, however, there does exist somewhere some body of written text identified by the specified title and authored by the specified author, flagging becomes a much more controversial proposition and is subject to legitimate debate. Hope that helps.
One more heuristic: in the event that such a work does identifiably exist, the next thing to ask is: "Was this primarily written to be read by people or by search engine spiders?" If it's a keyword-stuffed piece of SEO gibberish, it's not a "work" in my book. If it was intended to be read by people, that makes the argument against flagging even stronger.
