Capitalization help

I have been given a large but rather badly-formatted trove of Spanish-language data. Among other things, the titles and authors are all in upper-case. What is the rule for Spanish-language books. Can I safely throw the titles into lowercase, except for the first letter of the title? That's the US library rule. Or should I capitalize every word in the title—the Amazon rule, among other things. Are there going to be major pitfal with certain words?

These can all be in lowercase (except for the first word in the title). But I suppose you'll have to take it on a case-by-case basis, some other batches might contain personal names, geographical names etc.

It also looks like there are a fair number of stray spaces that snuck in somehow (which may be included in your "other things": "de la es piritualidad rather than "de la espiritualidad", "ciencia de los limi tes" rather than "ciencia de los limites.")

Also the third title, "diccionari de paruales noves", appears to be in some other Romance language. {search search} Ah, it's Catalan: http://www.iula.upf.edu/publi009.htm

This data is such crap...

The name thing makes me want to use "title case" (every word capitalized). Is that acceptable?

Tim está trabajando con títulos de libros españoles. Pensa si debe capitalizar todas las palabras o solamente el primero. ¿Está bien si todos los capitaliza? Con títulos ingleses la regla tipicamente es que necesita capitalizar las palabras importantes (no artículos, conjunciónes, etc.), pero a veces capitaliza todos (como la regla de Amazon.com) o solamente la primera palabra (la regla de bibliotecas). ¿Sabe Ud. que método se usa tipicamente con libros españoles?

(Lo siento si mi español es malo. Estoy en mi cuarto año de estudiarlo.)

In Spain one only capitalizes the first word. Damn.

Well, you're always going to have a problem with proper names...

I don't think anyone is going to complain to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language if you capitalise every word and it will make your job much easier.
