When they announced that Cursed Child was coming out this summer, my immediate response was to start agitating for a midnight release party, because who would have thought that we'd ever get to do that again? (It didn't take too much effort; I'm by no means the only Potterhead around here.) I've been collecting lots of ideas on Pinterest and from talking to my coworkers, but it never hurts to have more input.

So, if you were attending an all-ages Harry Potter midnight release party at a public library, what would you hope to see? What would you like to be able to do? What would make it the coolest HP event you've ever attended?

I have such great memories of the midnight release parties I went to for the other Harry Potter books! So magical. Though those were all at bookstores, not a library.

I think a wand-making activity is a must! And maybe some kind of scavenger hunt within the library? Costume contest! Trivia contest!
(these are probably all things you've already thought of)

Perhaps making of treats from the The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook depending on your facility options.

I second norabelle's and Micky's ideas. And you should have butterbeer!!

We're definitely having butterbeer! We'll have other Potter-themed treats, too, though we haven't settled on which ones yet. We're also planning to do Quidditch, a costume contest, trivia, and crafts (wand-making is a good one -- I'll have to look into that a little more and decide what would be the best way to do it). We're also partnering with a bookstore so we'll have copies available for sale at midnight, as well as a limited number of library copies available for those who placed holds early enough.

For wands might I suggest drinking straws? You can have things to put inside them like the Harry Potter wands have - feathers, shiny string, glitter - and then have different colored electrical tape or scrapbooking tape to wrap around the straw and make it look like a wand

Hmm...might be lunchtime for me, but when I thought of wands, I thought of Red Vine, and decorating them with other types of candy.
