Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:
-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.
-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.
Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

A review on another of his books appears to be by hired reviewer:
In addition to the above, I also provide a comment (or two) on the author's profile. In a couple of cases, the author has taken great umbrage to my very polite reminder (I didn't write it, I "borrowed" it from someone else who has often posted it).
I am careful (usually) about not giving in to impulses to flag before I've had adequate coffee, recognizing that I normally lack people skills, and that, uncaffeinated, I lack even basic humanity.
>18 2wonderY: There might well have been multiple spamming threads, but they weren't listed here (I know, I know, it's a bother, but it should still be done). There isn't anyone currently participating in this that I don't like and respect, but we still need to be like Caesar's wife.
I am careful (usually) about not giving in to impulses to flag before I've had adequate coffee,
For me, it's that first cup of tea in the morning. Without it, I am not recognizably human.
Based on the book CreationsArt has on her shelf, I wonder if her post was misunderstood.
I would very much like to know the content of the flagged post, because based on the poster's profile and the book of which she is the author, I am starting to doubt that it was flaggable. The term "adult" may have caused people to jump to erroneous conclusions.
I'm pretty sure the reason for flagging was as spam; authors promoting their own books, which this appears to have been (not seeing the post), still get the offending posts flagged, just not their profiles.
authors promoting their own books . . . still get the offending posts flagged, just not their profiles.
I know that.
But the reason for the flagging was not apparent, nor were the responses to my question about it. I do wish that people who post here would state their reasons.
2wonderY's explanation in #39 (particularly the "disingenuously" part of the wording) implied to me that it was self-promotion, but I agree 100% that I'd like to see reasons stated for those of us who are late to the party.
When there's the possibility for ambiguity I tend to use "grown-up". It may sound a bit childish but it's at least clear.
I accidentally posted in the thread instead of leaving the message on the member's page. (I know better but I'm not fully awake yet.)
Um, all gone now. There was a group and a topic, too.
I'm sure there were private comments before that were ignored, since this is a second offense...
Or public ones that were deleted.
looks like an advertisement for a web site so I flagged it.
looks like an established member so I didn't flag it.

His reviews are all copied from other people.
ETA He responded: From PhilipAOldfield to you Today, 6:07am
Hi Martha Jeanne, I wasn't aware. Thanks for the links, appreciate it, Philip

ETA And works; and reviews... this guy is going nuts with mindless commercial spam.
I can't tell who's doing it or how to respond.
I'd leave it until someone shows up, so that they can at least see the profile of the perpetrator.
ETA: It would be helpful if you provided a link to the venue itself. That's an awfully common name.
ETA: OK, the topic is gone. The "work" remains along with his own review.
(https://www.librarything.com/profile/paulcollis should not be flagged.)
Are you sure we should flag someone who "is fully able to do powerful vashikaran"?

NYC events are being crapified. They're getting hit hard, too.
Lorannen, a job for you...
I'm also talking with Tim about whether there's a faster, more effective way to combat these.
I think I've got them all cleaned up... for now.
ETA: I left another reminder for her.
https://www.librarything.com/topic/224561 still needs one more flag.
ETA, he's got RIP next to his name now.
There is no record of him spamming in February.
I'm not sure of these but convinced enough that I've flagged them.

ETA: It's already been (auto?)-archived. Is this a diagnostic move of some sort?
and working backwards through the threads with spam replies to spam...
(LOL! Spammer spams in Spam Fighters!)
This one is leaving spam in various CK fields like the Haiku.
Please remember folks, don't flag the author (although a couple more posts will make that a done deal, in any case, it seems).
ETA: Only the last post is there, still (probably because it's one of those join to post groups). Note there've been responses to it.
Extra profile, noted here for the sake of completion.
I'm just so cynical. Not wrong, though. I also left a comment on that profile.
Oh, I see. He answered the spam.
Everyone makes mistakes. I require coffee to start up brain cells, myself, and have been known to make mistakes beforehand. Like this morning, just now.
I just posted on one of the threads to someone who'd replied to one of them (asking him not to do that), and then did a forehead slap, and remembered that I wasn't helping.
I've done that, figuring the damage was done, but then realized that my new post bumped the thread up. Defintely a "duuuuhhh" moment!
He got up to 852, but he's gone.
This account is posting more than a hundred spam posts.
That you may quite simply view this type of state in any of your existence, work and social spheres where we have artificially coordinated several common aspects to swimsuit our preferences and comforts. ----- same also certainly pertains to our physical nation-states wherein by way of fitness measures we work our bodies to grow into healthy muscle portions.
Please note that most of the posts from this account (apparently female) speak from a male perspective. jnwelch, you might want to alert staff (specifically lorannen) about that thread, and all, but it's ugly, and certainly deserving of flagging the comments. I never understand why someone has the need to spew such anger, but then, I lead a sheltered life (okay, I lead a hermit's life; same thing).
I do not, EVER, understand the need for people spew hate, but I suppose it's best that I don't understand it. Still a sad business, all around.
Note: I have no looked at the thread in question. This week in particular I do not have the energy to read the words of haters.
Tim has, in violation of conventional wisdom everywhere else online, specifically suggested that we feed the trolls on LT, in the hopes that they will cross the line from insulting all (women, gays, black people, etc.) to specifically insulting an individual by name, at which point we can flag them.
Accidentally put it here first. Also posted to the new thread.
