The curse of the new and shiny. Old dusty tomes are always dull by comparison.
I try to remind myself that they were once bright and shiny too!

book 1
The Magnificent Amberson
Pulitzer Prize Challenge
That was a very interesting reading. It shows the rise and fall of American families who leave a footnote in history or nothing. In this particular story the fall of the Amberson family is shown. Whereas George Amberson Minafer's grandfather was a wealthy and respected man, his offspring show no incentive to manage or enhance the asset. On the contrary, they feel that they can continue to live on a large foot as this was the case earlier, without doing anything for the community and also to pursue any profession. But the world turned quickly. New inventions such as the car has been made, the city kept growing and new names were more important to the community than the Ambersons. George Amberson Minafer started to work only when the whole family fortune was lost and he had to support his aunt so she could spend a pleasant retirement.

book 2
BAC February
Normally I love the ease of Christie's thrillers. This, however, was very long-winded. Somehow missing a fast-paced tension. Although I'm a fan of Poirot's little gray cells and I love his charming Belgian way to solve a murder mystery, he convinced me not in this book.

>45 Ameise1: I have to confess that that is the only Christie I have ever read. I think I scored it similarly, and didn't feel like I wanted to rush to read any more.
47Ameise1
>46 Jackie_K: Jackie, usually I adore her books. She was a master in misdirection. This was her first book and I think she made it better with the later ones.

book 3
The Confession
This was a very impressive story. It shows that Steinhauer knows the Eastern Europe history of the cold war very closely. While the first book in this series during and after WWII plays describes this part of the mid fifties. As before it comes to spying in the highest circles. Neither the police nor the intelligence service is exempt. The big brother Russia flexes its muscles and monitors the activities of other countries of Eastern Europe. The Russian spies have the feeling that they had a free hand and cover up their murders and killed police officers other nations who come too close. Ferenc tries again this time not only to protect his wife and daughter as well as his closest friends in the police station and he brings himself in great danger.
Besides the great crisis in Hungary is mentioned. During these tragic weeks, many Hungarians fled to the West. I myself have friends who participated this flight. Although they are now almost 60 years living with us, this tragic chapter of her life is always in them.

book 4
The Blackhouse
This is a very exciting entry into the Lewis Trilogy. It is the story of DI Fin Macleod and his friends from childhood and youth. Macleod is sent to the Isle of Lewis, where he was born and raised in order to solve a murder, which has similarities to a murder he treated in Edinburgh. On the island arrived, not only the investigation of the murder awaits him, but he has to deal with his past. He is not only received with open arms, but suddenly faces reticence and aggression. By the time he comes back the cause of the murder and his messed up childhood has to process painful.
It was a very gripping reading and I liked it very much.

This is an exciting thriller that made me breathless until the last page. It is the first book of the Underworld USA trilogy . It is the rise of the Kennedys to the day of the assassination of JFK. It is the story of how the Mafia, corrupt agents (FBI / CIA) to the highest authorities had their hands in the game. It is also the story of the Cuban Crisis. Even if it is a fiction, shows Ellroy how politics works. Although this is a purely American history, it could happen in many countries worldwide like that. It shows once again that money rules the world and who sold the devil his soul, it gets never return.

Four to Score
This was a very enjoyable read. I often laughed out loud about Stephanie's clumsiness. She has truly come to a talent in every faux pas and to achieve her goal anyway. In this story, once again went to her apartment and her car in flames. The special love relationship with Joe Morelli was intensified and Grandma Mazur, who always 'young at heart' coped well with a drag queen.
I love Plums stories, as they are easy and quick to read and always make me laugh.

book 7
The Case of the Man Who died Laughing
This is the second book of the Vish Puri series. It is a very amusing reading. I like the way Hall captures life, the smells, the sounds and emotions in Delhi and brings across us readers as authentic that we have to be right in the middle of this bustling city feel. The main theme in this story is about how people are guided by the charlatanism of gurus hoodwinked and partly lose not only their independent thinking but also their money and their lives. It is described as having 'magic' tricks that people are out there to believe in nonexistent miracle.
But also the private lives of Vish Puri seems to bring news. So his daughter is pregnant with twins and his 'detective' mother and his wife determine without Puris knowledge in a robbery.
It is a book where there is plenty to smile and laugh. I am looking forward to the next volume.

The Villa of Mysteries
ROOT 2016
This is the second book of the Nic Costa series. I love this series and have most of the books already read, I did not start at the beginning. In this case, Nic Costa and his team have to solve the mystery of a young dead who was murdered sixteen years ago and a young girl who recently disappeared. He is on the track of the dark machinations of the Roman mob as well as their pathological sex drive by young girls are are stoned with drugs and raped. All this hidden under the slogan of an ancient ritual under Dyonisos.
It is exciting and the pathologist can not be determining.

The Yiddish Policemen's Union
AAC October
This was an exciting reading. Detective Meyer Landsman is awakened, because in another room of his hotel someone is dead. This is the beginning of an odyssey, with Landsman dealing not only with rival Jews, but also with his own past. You have the feeling that Landsman puts his foot in his mouth, losing everything that once meant something to him. In the course of time, however, one realizes that this kind of investigation will ultimately lead to the goal.
I have suffered with him. It was a fast reading and I could not put it aside.

Gallows View
BAC December
This is the first volume of the Inspector Banks series. I have read many books of this series, just not in the correct order. It was therefore very exciting to get to know the beginning of this series.
Alan Banks does not just have to arrest a voyeur. He has also been involved in a burglar series, which is carried out by teenagers and a murder of an old woman is also causing him headaches, because it seems to fit into no pattern. Banks has left the hectic London to return to the tranquil Eastvale, where the work seems to be much more hectic.
I like this series very much and will read more of it.
