We are pleased to present:

Author Katharine M. Rogers will speak on her non-fiction book L. Frank Baum: Creator of Oz. She will discuss what is distinctive about Baum's imaginative creations, his feminism, and some relationships between his life and his work.

Her biography of Baum is a tribute to the author who enlivened her childhood with wonderful adventures to the Land of Oz. Oz is a world filled with inventive and amusing characters, where life is endlessly exciting and where good always prevails - and yet Baum's plain, matter-of-fact narrative, constantly supported by everyday details, makes it believable. Another reason Baum's fantasies appealed to Rogers, which she realized after her consciousness was raised as an adult, is that they are feminist. His protagonists are almost always self-reliant, enterprising, resourceful little girls; and he created a gallery of impressive females, including Glinda the Good Sorceress, the free-spirited Patchwork Girl, a terrifying Yookoohoo who can turn anyone into anything at will by pointing her finger, and an assertive yellow hen.

Katharine Munzer Rogers, a Professor Emerita of English from the City University of New York, now lives in Bethesda. She specialized in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature and Women's Studies, and since retirement has looked into other fields that interest her. Her latest books are The Cat and the Human Imagination (1998), L. Frank Baum: Creator of Oz (2002), and First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans(2005).
