Drop a letter and become a nerd?

I'm a nerd without dropping a letter!
But, Crambo's word isn't.

NOT: geek

Is it __ __ __ __: an "East Indian* tree yielding hard wood" - - or the wood of that tree?

*Despite its Anglo-Saxon "sound", the name is derived from the Malayalam language, through Portuguese.

Don't worry, if these folks inherit the earth, we'll just take it from them.

There once was a carver named Chan who had a shop where he made and sold wooden carvings. One day, he opened his shop to find it had been broken into and some of his carvings were missing. He noticed some small footprints on the floor so Chan decided to stay in his shop after closing, hoping that the thief would return, and if so, he would catch him in the act. Sure enough, that night after Chan closed the shop, the thief returned and broke in. The thief was a bear who grabbed a few more carvings and headed for the door. Before he could escape, Chan jumped in front of him from behind the counter and exclaimed, "Aha! So it's you, boy-foot bear with teaks of Chan!"

Thanks for the reminder of the "Carver named Chan
. . . boyfoot bear" story. It is so old, itʻs almost new. (Teak" is of course correct as the guess OF the guess; in the version I heard, it was singular, as ʻcheek" was in the Whittier poem being evoked.) I last heard it some time in the late 1950s. Jokes of that structure seemed to flourish in that decade, and I havenʻt heard any in recent decades.

Archaic 3-letter adverb meaning
"also", "too" ? Derived from an Anglo-Saxon verb meaning "increase". Not much used after Chaucerʻs time.

Nearly a month with no reply to Roland! Should Jenny inherit Gaia?

Alas and alack, I obviously haven't been paying attention!
Mea maxima culpa :-(

Is it Charles Dickens' home in the midwinter ?

NB/ Regarding archaic 'eke', we used to have a cat by that name (well, Eeky) because of the sound she made!

You can climb every mountain but you won't find Crambo's word, no matter how you spell it.

I was channeling a disco hit by this elegantly fashionable band when I saw Giannis Antetokounmpo on the SportsCenter highlights the other night.

I won a sports trivia contest once and I have the t-shirt to prove it! It was a truly freaky moment as the extent of my sports knowledge is the ability to spell sports. Oh, and yeah, sometimes being a good one. I try, honest I do!

a grope --er I mean GROUP - -
(or sub-group)
that has a particular (weird?)
tendency and is usually
influential though not a majority
of the overall group ?

Me, too!!! But not Crambo :(

I thought I gave a big hint in >1 Jenni_Canuck: but perhaps only for those of a certain age like Harold Ray Ragsdale for example.

28Jim53
maaliskuu 19, 2015, 9:02 am

Please understand that I didn't mean Ethel would literally grab anything; she was incensed by my wording!

I tried to think about the shameless hussy when you first posted the game, but it didn't help me find this answer, because in my experience, it wasn't the hussies who did it, just the shameless dudes. Am I sure? Hell yes, I'm sure. Whaddaya mean, how?

Baby better come back, maybe next week
Cause you see I'm on a run of bad luck
I can't get no...

If this is correct (and if it isn't, I look pretty silly, n'est-ce pas? but I'm used to it), new game will commence next week after I get Ethel some smelling salts.
